Indian Court Sentences Kashmiri Leader to Life in Prison (The Diplomat)

Yasin Malik led the banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front but subsequently shifted to peaceful means.

Malik was arrested during a raid by Indian troops in 1990 and was released in 1994. It unleashed a brutal counterinsurgency campaign, and soldiers were given broad impunity and allowed to shoot suspects on sight or detain them indefinitely. Shops and businesses closed in the main centers of Srinagar. “The terrorism-related charges leveled against me are concocted, fabricated and politically motivated,” he said. Before Wednesday’s sentencing, dozens of Kashmiris gathered at Malik’s home in Srinagar, the largest city in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Some marched through the streets, chanting “We want freedom” and “Go back India.” Government forces fired tear gas at the marchers, who threw stones. Muslim-majority Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since British colonialists granted it independence in 1947.

Today Jhelum is a mass of muddy water which has witnessed the zulm of decades. Prabhash Chandra has looked at Kashmir from a lens which to me is comparable with the best of European cinema. Through the scenes in my film I have looked at how this kind of nationalism breeds fascist ideology and how it regulates women’s bodies to assert power, making it a site of nationalist politics, violence and conflict. ’Through the film I have tried to look for an expression where I can bring in the narratives of women and girls who have been gang-raped and murdered in these many years. There is Lokesh Jain playing Bilal with immense restraint of a man who having witnessed it all has reached life’s end. Nothing bothers him except when he is stripped naked and tortured on the charge of harbouring militants. Her father sends her to Delhi in a desperate attempt to remove her from scenes of violence. The film showed a shattered Kashmir in 2022, far far cry from the Jannat e Kashmir which I had known, about which poets had sung peans. The scene in which 10 girls, like the chorus in Greek Tragedy pull strings of their salwars and step out of the heaped garment to lie down on the bare floor, speaks much more than words. A boy sits in a corner of his house with brush and black paint making posters; again and again he writes just one word ‘Azadi’, in many forms until his mother comes and tears up his posters. The film has been released only at film festivals. During my Planning Commission term I had cried at the desolation of the valley.

Yasin Malik: Kashmir militancy's long arc, shadow of Pakistan (The Indian Express)

Malik picked up the gun more than 30 yrs ago; gave it up in the mid-90s. For a while, the Indian state invested in him, but ended up disappointed.

In 2003, as India and Pakistan took halting steps towards a dialogue after several years of backchannel contact, Malik began a campaign for Kashmiris to be included in the process. He boycotted elections, and told people the government would use the turnout to tell the world that Kashmir had returned to normal. Malik and another separatist leader, Shabir Shah, were released in 1994, at a time when the Indian state was casting around for a way out of the Kashmir quicksand. Wani had become the face of Kashmir’s new militancy, and as his death sparked spontaneous protests across Kashmir, the separatists moved to claim their leadership. The growing irritation with Malik on the Indian side was evident, but the definitive break came when he joined hands with Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Omar Farooq to form the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) in 2016, after the killing of Hizb commander Burhan Wani that year. Both Shah, the “headmaster” of militants, and Malik, the “head boy”, turned out to be huge disappointments for Delhi, Dulat wrote. “He was a free man, he would just come and sit and talk for a while,” Dr Kaul said. The doctor and the militant conversed in Kashmiri. “He was a good and obedient patient. Two people Dulat cited as being important influences in this decision were Farooq Abdullah, who did some “plain talking” with him on the lawns of the jail, and Dr Upendra Kaul, a cardiac surgeon then at AIIMS, who performed a heart valve surgery on Malik. But there was a time when the Indian establishment believed Malik would be more useful as a free man. “He (Malik) had a leaking heart valve. One pertains to the abduction of Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of India’s then Home Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, in 1989; another to the killing of four IAF personnel, including a Squadron Leader, in Srinagar in 1990.

How hatred killed Kashmir's rising video star (Hindustan Times)

Amreen Bhat was shot dead by unidentified militants in her village of Hushroo, deep in central Kashmir's Budgam district on Wednesday.

The men hesitated and the younger man brought out a pistol and shot her in the neck. Still I told her many times to stop doing these videos but she told me that she is doing nothing wrong,” he remembered. They killed a human being as if they killed humanity,” said a woman sitting in the tent. “She earned for her father and her sister’s children. The child was with her and he was also hit in the arm,” said Mohammad. She divorced him in 2014 and returned to Hushroo. Now home to an ailing father, and a brother who struggled to make ends meet, Bhat started running the household. It is this storey that Amreen Bhat was building for her family for the past year, with the money she was making from her wildly popular videos on social media, many of which were shot in the backyard of the house, and the green fields of paddy that ringed it. Her Instagram profile was littered with comments blaming her for sullying traditions and religion. Her head was mostly covered, they point out, and many videos carried the text, “Love you ma,” a dedication to her mother, Mughli, who died 14 years ago. “When her mother died, she took all the burden of the house. They had no major source of income; she started working in TV and also recording videos. A village of 1,500people, Hushroo is located deep in the heart of Budgam district.

A tale of two countries: interpreting The Kashmir Files (The Interpreter)

Once famed for their secular constitutions, India and Singapore have taken different tacks on religious vilification.

While Singapore favoured a ban as a means of protecting its secularism, the BJP used the film as a way to legitimise its Hindu nationalist discourse, further fracturing communal relationships in an increasingly polarised India. The BJP, with its explicit Hindutva posturing, has been accused of actively promoting anti-Muslim and anti-minority sentiments as part of its mainstream political discourse, affecting the plural fabric of the country. The governing People’s Action Party in Singapore has long perceived issues of ethnicity and religion as highly sensitive and requiring close management. Singapore’s decisive stance on the film is reflective of its robust, interventionist approach to the management of multiculturalism and diversity in the city state. Critics have panned the film for blatant Islamophobia and a biased portrayal of history, with themes that align with the Hindu nationalist agenda of the country’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the filmmaker depicts the event as a genocide – a claim that remains disputed – with Muslims unequivocally seen as the enemy.

Many waited for Kashmir to erupt after Yasin Malik verdict. It didn't ... (ThePrint)

It's conviction time in Kashmir, about a decade delayed, and should be completed for others involved as well.

The charges were many, and Malik was arrested in March. That was that. Once that is made clear on the ground, the war is virtually over. Whether a political agreement is made thereafter to soothe the waters is a decision to be taken, remembering that in such wars there are no winners or losers. It is also true that he met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and engaged with the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, when he went on a bus to Pakistan to give credence to the peace talks launched with General Pervez Musharraf. In 2001, Malik was given a passport to travel to the US for medical treatment. It also refused any “Gandhian” theory, arguing that the chaos 2016 onwards was nothing like a peaceful struggle. Meanwhile, the JKLF and other groups were banned by the Indian government shortly after the Pulwama attack that killed 40 security personnel in February 2019. He had already been trained in Pakistan, and his decision to give up militancy came at a time when his group had already begun to be side-lined by the lot belonging to the Hizbul Mujahideen and later others, created in Pakistan for the explicit purpose of eroding the ‘secular’ JKLF. Besides, it was increasingly unsafe to be on the wrong side of the ISI in Kashmir. Remember, this was just after the killing of Burhan Wani, a picture-perfect militant, with very little actual effectiveness. The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) of which Yasin Malik became the chairman briefly, was formed in England and has a hugely colourful and well-funded past. Its Kashmir chapter under Yasin Malik, called a ceasefire in 1994 declaring he would pursue the struggle by “Gandhian means”. A spitfire from Maisuma, Srinagar, Malik had long been active in fomenting trouble and was no blue-eyed boy lost in idealism. The accused pleaded guilty to all charges, and the court anxiously asked him if he was sure about the consequences. The noise and the protests were expected.
