Inside Charm Industrial's big bet on corn stalks for carbon removal (MIT Technology Review)

The startup used plant matter and bio-oil to sequester thousands of tons of carbon. The question now is how reliable, scalable, and economical this approach ...

He adds that competing uses of corn remains depend on the region, but that much of it isn’t sold or plowed under, leaving it to rot and release carbon dioxide. But he says it’s not clear whether Charm’s method will prove to be among the most effective, scalable, or affordable over time, or the best use of this biomass as the need grows for ever more renewable energy sources. Reinhardt says Charm will improve those figures over time by switching to carbon-neutral syngas instead of diesel to initiate the pyrolysis process, optimizing its pyrolyzers for converting plant matter to bio-oil, and eventually transitioning to electric trucks. If Charm and other companies buy up large amounts of corn leftovers, cattle farmers might have to switch to other sources of low-cost feed, including crops grown for that purpose. To help the company “develop the appropriate pathways for safe and permanent injection,” he said in an email, it has hired consultants who’ve permitted, built, and operated injection wells in the past. How much net carbon the process stores depends on what would otherwise have happened to the plant material. It leans on agricultural crops to capture the carbon and uses existing formations for storage. In 2020, Charm’s chief scientist, cofounder Shaun Meehan, had a bright idea: if the company was willing to do what Reinhardt describes as “half-assed gasification,” yielding bio-oil instead of hydrogen, the equipment could fit into the back of a semi-trailer. But it’s a tiny sliver of the billions of tons per year that climate scientists warn the world may need to suck up in the coming decades to pull the warming planet back into a safer zone. But farmers generally take a conservative approach to avoid the cost of synthetic nutrient additives, says Chad Hart, a professor of economics at Iowa State University. Charm says it solidifies there, locking away carbon for thousands to millions of years that would otherwise go back into the air as farmers burn crop remains or leave them to rot. The former will eventually go back into fields, adding carbon and nutrients to the soil.

Rebirth at Riv: An oral history of the 2012 NCAA Golf Championship ... (Golf Channel)

Even to this day, John Fields gets fired up thinking about it. The longtime Texas head coach, after years of underperforming Longhorn teams, was in a contract ...

We had played poorly in the first round that day and were in 21st out of 27 teams, and I was asked by my assistants if I was going to get on the kids, if I was going to read them the riot act. I didn’t think he was ever going to get it on the green.” And in Texas’ group, Cal, like Desimone had anticipated, got off to a hot start – 6 under at one point – and climbed into the top 8 on the back of Homa, who one-putted each of his first 10 holes despite hitting just four greens and shot 70. He picked the right clubs and put the ball in the right spots. In the second round of regionals, Spieth ballooned with a 77, his second round of 75 or worse in his past two events. There’s Texas, this is us, this is who we’re going to be if we just run’ – and I did say Texas because they were clearly the best team in the country at the time.” He understood, he looked at our team, and was like, I have a bunch of really good players here, I just need to let them go. … I knew that we had to have that golf course, we had to have our academy, we had to have the practice facility, and it almost cost me my career. Seawell: “I’m a visual learner and teacher, and so I pulled up a part in the movie, “Secretariat,” at the very end where he’s going for the Triple Crown and there’s tension, and we go over all of it. I get down there, and it’s a young guy and he was getting in his truck, and I got him to come out and told him what was going on. “But I knew we had to have the golf course if we were going to go forward, if we were really going to be a relevant program into the future. On the heels of his arrival from New Mexico in 1998, Fields led Texas to a trio of Big 12 titles and a few top-5 showings at the NCAA Championship over the next seven seasons.

“We will also be able to relate this reproduction factor of the SCN population with soil variables,” Lopez-Nicora said. Similarly, if we plant soybeans variety and we observe a large increase in the SCN population at the end of the season, we will know that the specific cultivar was susceptible to that specific SCN population.” “Once determined, we will associate that factor with the crop that was planted in that field. “With this number, we will know if the SCN increased, decreased or maintained its population density in that field,” Lopez-Nicora said. This second sample will give us the final population of SCN. With the two pieces of information, we can calculate the SCN reproduction factor.” “We want farmers to take a sample at planting, and it doesn’t matter if it is corn or soybeans,” Lopez-Nicora said.

Justin Fields defends Bears receivers: They're 'good enough' (Chicago Bears Wire)

There's been plenty of criticism surrounding how the Chicago Bears have handled second-year quarterback Justin Fields this offseason.

With Fields entering a pivotal Year 2, it’s about putting him in the best position to succeed. “We don’t have an Odell or a Cooper Kupp on our team, but at the end of the day I think if everybody is on their P’s and Q’s, and we’re on top of everything and not making mistakes, the players we have right now are good enough,” Fields said. In an interview with Bleacher Report, Fields defended the Bears’ receiving corps, which has come under fire this offseason.

NFL World Reacts To The Justin Fields Training Video (The Spun)

If the Chicago Bears are going to make some noise this fall, second-year quarterback Justin Fields will need to look much better under center.

Though it's still fairly early in the offseason, it appears Fields has made a few adjustments to his game. "Have to wait to see what it looks like with a pass rush and real team reps but it’s encouraging!" "It’s two (2) throws from drills but Fields does look to have shortened up his lead foot when throwing.

Why Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields will improve in 2022, despite ... (Da Windy City)

The Chicago Bears have not added a lot of talent on offense. That still does not mean quarterback Justin Fields can improve in 2022.

Someone must not have told Coach Eberflus that his boss did not do much in the off-season to help Fields get better. Then there was seven years of former general manager Ryan Pace making aggressive moves to upgrade the offense. The Chicago Bears offseason has yet to yield quarterbacks Justin Fields dynamic playmakers on offense.

VIDEO: First Look At Luke Getsy's Detailed Approach With Justin ... (sportsmockery.com)

Luke Getsy faced the difficult task of fixing what Matt Nagy broke with Justin Fields. We finally got a brief look at his process.

This is the first goal for Luke Getsy in his efforts to elevate Fields. By the time training camp rolls around, he’ll be ready to take on the defense in live drills. Then the passing drill was an apparent effort to help speed up his processing and decision-making. From the feet to the throwing motion, all of his mechanics needed to be fixed. That was to rebuild Fields from the ground up. Sure his job is to win games and turn the entire team around, but everybody would be watching how he handled the development of Justin Fields. There were plenty of skeptics considering his defensive background.

Calexico League Sets Sights on New Soccer Fields (The Calexico Chronicle)

Of all the people who have appeared through the years to complain to the City Council, none seem quite as revered as Carmen Estrada.

At Cordova Park, the league intends to design and construct a soccer field. The anticipated expenditures would come in response to community members’ push for added infrastructure for various outdoor activities like baseball and tennis, said council member Gloria Romo. But seeing as how CPAA currently boasts more than 4,000 participants, Estrada has decided that the league she helped found in 2010 should directly apply for SOCAL Soccer League membership. During his stint on the City Council prior to becoming a county supervisor, Escobar became acquainted with Estrada’s tireless advocacy. Estrada is quick to admit her criticism of city officials reflects her stubbornness. You have to take your hats off because it’s not an easy fight.”

"We are proud of these current practices since we collectively share an affinity for the natural environment and want our families and friends to feel comfortable knowing they can safely enjoy our community's public parks." Most importantly, the choice that needs to be made is taking care of the infrastructure that's there. "I think this new proposed plan introducing the use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides, which we haven't been using currently, is taking us, unfortunately, in the opposite direction. Parks officials promised those administering the chemicals to the fields would adhere to all Ohio Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. The proposal states that fields at maintenance Level 3 "is a more intensive program warranted by turf conditions." They would be employed after a staff member trained in the use of pesticides and herbicides reviews field conditions for 48 hours over three weeks.

Chicago QB Justin Fields candidly addressed the state of the Bears wide receivers heading into the 2022 season.

In the eyes of Fields, it’s not an issue. Speaking with Bleacher Report, Fields admitted that while the Bears don’t have a star wideout on the team, they’re certainly good enough to make some noise in the NFC North. The Chicago Bears are hoping to see some significant strides from Justin Fields in 2022.
