Where The Wild Things Are: 9 Amazing South Sudan National Parks (TheTravel)

It's an important migration path since the park is as big as Rwanda. Its floodplains and grasslands are home to buffalos, lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, ...

For a change of scenery from plains to mountains, tourists should conquer the Imatong Mountains. Located in this brimming area is the country’s highest peak, the Kinyeti. The mountain is remote, making it the ideal place to test anyone’s trekking skills. The southern Nimule lies by the White Nile, one of the tributaries of the great Nile River. A safari experience in this park is unique because tourists are given the chance to observe animals splashing down the river. As such, it’s one biodiverse area and is tentatively listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sudd is known for its floating plant life like the tall common reed, wild rice, papyrus, southern cattail, and many types of grass. The bellows and the sounds of the movements work with the majestic views of the Serengeti to deliver a stunning show. The water is fine, and the landscape is welcoming, so tourists just need to choose where to go. There are stunning beaches in Africa but if tourists crave a wet and wild experience like no other, they should visit Sudd, one of the world’s largest freshwater areas. It’s perfect for birdwatchers because, thanks to oxbow lakes and wetlands, migratory birds frequent the place. The African nation of South Sudan is only a decade old, and its tourism sector is yet to boom. Whitewater rafters are welcome, too, thanks to the welcoming rapids of the river. It’s also home to Sudd, one of the planet’s largest wetlands. A mountain also rests in the park, the Jabal Mbangi, which adds an accent to the already picture-perfect landscape. It should be a part of a wildlife lover’s bucket list because it's where the real deal happens: the second-largest migration of animals on the planet.

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), otherwise known as sleeping sickness, is a life-threatening disease that afflicts poor rural populations.

All three countries have carried out extensive laboratory tests and reactive interventions in areas where cases were diagnosed, and have also undertaken interventions to target the vectors of disease, in this case, the tsetse flies. Uganda is the only country where both forms are endemic but has now achieved elimination as a public health problem of the gambiense form. This led to a progressive decrease in incidence, with cases going below 1000 annually for the first time in 2018.

Pre-action letter questions Home Office claims that east African country is 'generally safe'

Other organisations have also issued pre-action letters against the Rwanda plan. More than 9,000 have so far reached the UK since the start of the year, compared with 3,500 at the same point in 2021. Second legal challenge launched over deal to send asylum seekers ... (The Independent)

Home Office description of Rwanda as a 'safe third country' is irrational, legal letter says.

The UNHCR will continue proposing concrete alternatives that respect international refugee law.” Start your Independent Premium subscription today. The UN Refugee Agency has vocally opposed the Rwanda deal, saying it “evades international obligations and is contrary to the letter and spirit of the Refugee Convention”. Home Office guidance says that removal to Rwanda should be considered for inadmissible asylum seekers if it “stands a greater chance” than removal to the country they are deemed to have a connection to. The group is seeking a judicial review of the plan, following the publication of documents showing that asylum seekers could be transferred to Rwanda if they are deemed “inadmissible” for consideration in the UK. Freedom from Torture argues that the Home Office’s description of the nation as a safe country is “irrational”, and that the policy breaches human rights laws and the Refugee Convention.

7 Ways to See Gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda (AFAR Media)

Use these tips and list of recommended tour operators to plan a trip to see the famed silverback gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda.

In Rwanda, the price for a trekking permit is $1,500. This luxury tour operator’s Uganda: Gorillas and Beyond 2022 tour starts with a cruise up the Nile River to look for water birds, hippos, and crocodiles. No two gorilla treks are the same. From there, it’s off to Kibale National Park to spend time with its famous chimpanzees, followed by two days of game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, where Uganda kobs, Cape buffalo, elephants, and lions make frequent appearances in camera viewfinders. And, unlike many other tours, guests have the option to add a second day of trekking to see another gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. That being said, it’s easier to get permits during the low season. Safari specialists at this luxury travel company can craft unique itineraries for those who would prefer to only travel with friends and family. The tour wraps with gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. While it can be argued that there is no bad time to come face-to-face with these incredible animals, certain months are better than others—specifically during the dry seasons of December through February and June through August. Heavy rains throughout the rest of the year can make trekking trails, which can have steep slopes, muddy and slippery. Today, only about 1,000 mountain gorillas are left, making the species critically endangered. Here are a few companies we recommend if you’re considering booking a trip. The sole way to see them ( there are none in zoos) is by trekking in certain East African national parks (Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda). That trek also needs to be with a certified guide for your protection and the protection of the gorillas.

Rwandan researchers are finally being centred in scholarship about ... (The Conversation Africa)

It is widely known that African researchers are dramatically underrepresented in academic journals. But it's still astonishing to see this reality starkly ...

It was the need to overcome systemic biases and to amplify the voices of Rwandan scholars in global academic and policy debates that led us to establish the RPHE programme in 2014. It benefits others, too, by producing fresh insights and challenging the structures that for years stymied these critical voices. This category includes guaranteed parliamentary representation for women, people with disabilities, Muslims and the Batwa. But it conflates Batwa concerns with those of other marginalised communities in Rwanda. But Ntakirutimana was able to conduct extensive interviews with members of the community near the forests bordering Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. His respondents roundly criticised the “Historically Marginalised Peoples” framework. This has led to the chronic under-funding of the social sciences. When Ntakirutimana presented his research at an RPHE conference in Kigali, his findings generated vociferous push-back from Rwandan policymakers. By doing so, they’ve introduced new themes, angles and insights that greatly enrich the academic literature. International journal editors, peer reviewers and research funders routinely exclude Rwandan voices. The authors first produced working papers and policy briefs. Since we launched, experienced Rwandan and non-Rwandan researchers have worked closely with 44 Rwandan authors selected through four competitive calls that generated more than 400 research proposals. We found that from 1994 until 2019, of the 398 articles focusing on Rwanda that appeared in these journals, only 13 were authored or co-authored by Rwandan scholars. In 2019, the flagship area studies journal African Affairs published its first-ever article by a Rwandan. The author, Assumpta Mugiraneza (writing with Benjamin Chemouni) is supported by the RPHE programme.

Marlboro Rock Out Loud founder spreads his dream of music ... (Asbury Park Press)

Michael Grande, founder of Marlboro music school Rock Out Loud, is heading to Rwanda with the OmniPeace Foundation.

On Thursday, Grande, Fanaro and Rock Out Loud coaches will begin their preliminary meeting with the Ministry of Education of Rwanda because even though OmniPeace built these schools, the foundation is not in charge of the teaching methods utilized there. Implementing this philosophy at Rock Out Loud, Grande feels that students are able to not only learn music but grow as individuals. Instead, coaches should be the ones to teach music to students. Grande always knew he wanted to pursue a career in music. So, back in 2004 Grande opened the Staten Island School of Rock, where he saw his students transform into confident musicians, encouraging him to open a second location, this time in Marlboro under the name of Rock Out Loud. It’s just a totally different approach than teaching a curriculum,” said Grande.
