Paradise Cost: The Price of Supporting Private Ranching With a ... (Pacific Sun)

Funded by private donations and government grants and sales tax revenues, the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT) and the Marin Resource Conservation District ...

If Measure A did not include millions of dollars for MALT and the MRCD, environmentalist-led opposition to renewing the sales tax would likely evaporate, as parks are protected public spaces enjoyed by all. In response to a Pacific Sun-Bohemian query about the propriety of these non-agricultural uses, the Home Ranch Strauses replied, “The farm stays, agritourism and private events which we host are, to our understanding, compatible with our MALT easement. Asked if MALT easements that prohibit non-agricultural uses allow for hoteling and the hosting of commercial events, MALT executive director Jenifer Carlin replied, “The purpose of MALT easements is to enable properties to remain in agricultural use for the production of food and fiber, and we interpret all easements with that purpose in mind. Corporate retreats at the Straus Home Ranch can be customized to the cost of one’s tastes and guests are invited to “meet the heifers.” It should not be constricted and enfeebled.” According to the FPPC Guide, even the “appearance of a conflict of interest” is prohibited. The study concluded that public and private subsidies of “grass-fed” and “organic, sustainable” boutique products for rich consumers was the best option for promoting survival of the ailing dairy and cattle businesses. Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company executive Jill Giacomini Basch told Pacific Sun-Bohemian that “there are no ethical issues surrounding receipt of [MALT] funds” for MALT and MRCD projects while Ms. Hagan has served on the MALT board, pointing to MALT’s bylaws and conflict of interest policy. Founded in 1959, the MRCD is a member of the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts which lobbies on behalf of 96 local districts. So one of the unintended consequences of all that—having open space and agriculture zoning—has been to really run up the prices and values. MRCD supported the construction of miles of ranch access roads, a score of loafing barns and more than 100 “lagoons” holding liquified manure for use as fertilizer on pastures. Funded by private donations and government grants and sales tax revenues, the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT) and the Marin Resource Conservation District (MRCD) are examples of county conservation efforts. The investigation related how MALT was compelled by the county to return $833,000 in Measure A funds after it was revealed that executives had not disclosed an appraisal for the purchase of an easement from a board member that was less than the amount paid by the county.

Comparing Final Fantasy 16's Clive to Strangers of Paradise's Jack (Game Rant)

Final Fantasy 16 remains largely a mystery, but fans are wondering how its protagonist Clive measures up to Stranger of Paradise's Jack.

Stranger of Paradise's Jack was a controversial figure, and some players just couldn't get on board with his relentless anger and preoccupation with Chaos. Clive needs to be more distinct if he's going to drive the action in Final Fantasy 16, if for no other reason than to avoid the endless rounds of memes that Jack inspired. The main character in a game is an integral part of the whole. Much of Final Fantasy 16 remains a mystery at the moment, but players have been introduced to the game's protagonist. However, it seems as if the upcoming title is returning to the kind of high-fantasy setting of earlier Final Fantasy games instead of recent adventures in worlds that mixed fantasy with more modern elements. Released earlier this year as a prequel set in an alternate universe to the original Final Fantasy, Stranger of Paradise feels like a bit of an anomaly. One aspect that has been revealed of Final Fantasy 16, however, is the main characters that will drive the game's action.

Paradise Lost Podcast Serializes Miami's Most Lurid True-Crime ... (Miami New Times)

"Paradise Lost," by Kareem Tabsch and Joey Daoud, is a 13-episode podcast that delves into some of Miami's most lurid true-crime stories.

"It's the kind of place you don't want to ask people what they used to do because you don't really want to know," Tabsch asserts. You only have to look at movies like Scarface and prolific characters like Al Capone, who had a mansion on Palm Island and died here in 1947, to know that locals love a good if problematic anti-hero. "Miami is such a wellspring of bizarre stories that it made sense to revisit some of them," Tabsch says. Known as La Madrina and the "Black Widow," she was accused of having a hand in at least 40 murders between New York City and Miami, including "Florida has always been wild, it's always been the Wild West. It feels like there are no rules here, that nobody is going to hold you back. It made its debut last week with an episode devoted to the godmother of Miami crime, Griselda Blanco.

Zanzibar's plastic pollution heralds trouble in paradise (The Globe and Mail)

Islanders off Africa's east coast are at the forefront of the battle for a clean marine environment.

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), only 9 per cent of plastic waste is recycled globally. Today, Ms. Muggenburg holds regular workshops on the need to reduce plastic waste and has bonded with many Zanzibarians while doing so. Overwhelmed by the turtles’ low survival rate, she decided to do something to get rid of the marine pollution. Authorities banned plastic bags as early as 2008, to much applause, but the islands still lack proper garbage bins along the coastlines. Some of the trash ends up in the ocean, harming wildlife. To save turtles, his team has been cleaning up the beaches, but it’s a herculean task.

Smart Planning Has Made La Rochelle a Paradise for Walking and ... (theurbanist.org)

Situated on the central west coast of France, La Rochelle is one of the country's most popular domestic tourist destinations because of its proximity to Île ...

But it’s also important to point out, that when La Rochelle did engage in significant urban expansion, starting with the construction of the pleasure port of Les Minimes in the early 1970s, it continued to plan its development around people, not cars. This is because removal of vehicle traffic created enough space to make possible for a small fleet of ferry boats to come in service linking the city center to the Île de de Ré and Île de Oléron. When I lived in La Rochelle, I only visited the Île de de Ré once because the island was accessible by car or a very long bus ride. In a country known for its pride in its cities and urban environment, La Rochelle carries the distinction of being a city of many firsts. Previously views of the water at the old port were obstructed by moving vehicles, but now it is possible to sit a café and watch people and boats passing by. But returning to La Rochelle nearly two decades later, the transformation of that street into a space for people to eat, drink, walk, bike, and socialize was stunning. However, La Rochelle has also carved out a reputation of its own as a pioneer of forward thinking urban planning and policy.

County officials discuss involvement in Paradise sewer project (Clark Fork Valley Press)

To everyone it was a packed house this past Tuesday as the combatants on both sides of the Paradise sewer project convened at the Paradise Community Center.

“We work for the people of Paradise, not ourselves,” Caldwell added. The people have to have a say in this”. We (Sanders County) will step up and pay for it in full, the only thing we ask is that we take control of the project.” “We work together for the people. “The Water Board has to be responsible with money”. “Nothing in this world is free,” Overman said. And the time to act is now, he said. “We have discussed with Bridger our stance on buying the land involved at fair market value,” Caldwell said. “This debt should have been handled already and handled by a court if it wasn’t,” Caldwell said. I’ve been over-seeing everything and establishing responsibility”. “We need to resolve this situation, it is tearing apart our community,” she pleaded. I can tell you we have people with holding tanks for their sewage because their septic systems have failed.

Drilling Underway at the Davis/Paradise Project, Nevada (Eminetra Canada)

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 24, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Almadex Minerals Ltd. (“Almadex” or the “Company”) (TSX-V: “DEX”) is pleased to announce that ...

The Company owns several portable diamond drill rigs, enabling it to conduct cost effective first pass exploration drilling in house. The property now comprises 358 claims totalling approximately 2,800 hectares with multiple targets, located approximately eight miles southeast of Gabbs, Nevada and five miles northeast of the Paradise Peak gold mine. The Southern Paradise portion of the property covers high level acid sulphate quartz alunite alteration as well as a zone of phyllic alteration identified by past alteration mapping and a recent WorldView remote sensing study conducted by the Company in 2020 with results received in 2021. The strike and dip of the Davis vein was interpreted by the historic operators but cannot be verified by the Company at this time so true widths cannot be estimated or confirmed by the Company. There can be no assurances that such statements will prove accurate and, therefore, readers are advised to rely on their own evaluation of such uncertainties. Field work conducted in April on the claim mapped an area of strong phyllic alteration associated with several styles of quartz veining with pyrite and chalcopyrite evident, suggesting a porphyry style of mineralisation. Almadex Minerals Ltd. is an exploration company that holds a large mineral portfolio consisting of exploration projects and NSR royalties in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. This portfolio is the direct result of many years of prospecting and deal-making by Almadex’s management team. There is evidence of historic drilling on the Paradise property with unknown results. While this historic Davis Mine area drilling cannot be verified by the Company, as it was not completed in accordance with NI 43- 101, it provides a clear exploration focus. Drilling has commenced on the Davis Zone in the northern Davis portion of the property where high level epithermal alteration and veining has been identified. J Duane Poliquin, Chairman of Almadex commented, “We are very happy to get the drill turning on our exploration projects. The property was held by USSRAM Exploration from 1979 to around 2004, during which time various exploration and drilling programs were carried out on the property, including eleven drill holes to investigate mineralisation in the historic Davis mine area.

Ever want to get in the doughnut business? Wichita couple is ready ... (Wichita Eagle)

If you've ever dreamed of getting into the doughnut business, a local couple has a deal for you. Marilyn and Hervey Wright, who own two Paradise Donut shops ...

Business was good during the pandemic, and people who were stuck at home took full advantage of the west-side shop’s’ drive-through window, the couple said. They closed the Central location in 2018 and moved it to 612 E. Douglas, right across the street from Naftzger Park downtown. The Wrights added coffee, breakfast burritos and sausage rolls, but they think their large west-side store would be a perfect place for someone to add lunch service. Ideally, they said, a young couple would want to buy the business and keep it going. We’ve got Dunkin’ Donuts everywhere and all the other shops, but we continue to grow. Marilyn and Hervey Wright, who own two Paradise Donut shops in Wichita, say they are ready to retire, and they’re now looking for a buyer.
