"I have to be pleased with the match," Djokovic said, according to Insider. "I struggled to adapt in the first set. "I have no idea what they are thinking," McEnroe added. As a result, the crowd rained down boos on the 35-year-old star.
Carlos Alcaraz progressed to the third round of the French Open in Paris after beating his fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Viñolas in a delirious five-set ...
What is clear is that Alcaraz is one of the most thrilling sights in the sport right now and his matches to come will be essential viewing. The match was ultimately decided by two supreme pieces of skill and athleticism. As Alcaraz’s errors flowed, he took the second and third sets and then he broke to serve for the match at 5-4. By cutting out his own errors, keeping the ball in play and striking one outrageous bounce smash winner, Alcaraz survived before edging out the tiebreak. He was, according to some bookmakers, the tournament favourite to win Roland Garros even with Djokovic and Nadal present. The challenge before Alcaraz on the third biggest court was one of the ultimate irritants in the game.

Zverev eventually regained his composure — it was the third comeback from a two-set deficit in Zverev’s career. I’m looking forward to the next challenge.” Everything is going in the right direction. Moutet knocked out 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka in round one. It looked like Carlos Alcaraz was going to lose on Wednesday. But he didn't -- and showed some viral-worthy points that only make him more of a star.
Entering Wednesday's match, he had won 11-straight matches and was experiencing a magical season on clay, with titles in both Barcelona and Madrid. During the latter event, he defeated Nadal and Djokovic on consecutive days in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Of course, it might be too premature to be thinking about that. Alcaraz will next face American Sebastian Korda in the third round in what should be another tightly contested battle. His self-belief and never-quit attitude enamored him even further to the already devoted crowd, who seemed to sense they were witnessing something special. "Of course it was tough, saving match ball is always tough, but I believe in myself." But since then, he's put himself in another stratosphere, with fans and expectations normally reserved only for Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. His matches have become must-see viewing, and the hype has grown with every victory.
Both players are among the top seeds in the men's singles tournament and saved match points before turning things around.
For all his self-evident talent, it is quite a challenge to arrive at a Grand Slam tournament in your teens as one of the favorites. He beat Nadal and Djokovic back to back in Madrid before taking a break to rest and recover for Paris. They traded breaks of serve again, but Alcaraz was not done running and digging. But after carefully and cleverly building the platform for an upset, Ramos could not quite finish the construction job. But it certainly looked like his grittiest as he found a way to advance, 6-1, 6-7 (7), 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-4. The Mathieu Court is nicknamed the Greenhouse because it was built amid botanical gardens and is surrounded by exotic plants.
Carlos Alcaraz won a French Open five-set thriller over Albert Ramos Vinolas to advance to the third round at Roland Garros.
“He train with a lot of intensity all the time. “I want to play big battles and tough battles against the best players in the world,” Alcaraz said. “The intensity he train, no?” he said. He was also up 3-0 in a fifth set that included six breaks of serve. It marked the longest match of Alcaraz’s young career at more than four and a half hours. We fought until the last point.”

Join Tom Davies for live updates from Roland Garros, with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga potentially playing the final match of his career.
Tsonga seems to throw every ounce of himself, and there are a few of them, at every forehand, and his power is too much for Ruud. Tsonga closes out the service game, we’re going to a tie-break! Ruud is brave to save the second: coming into the net and expertly volleying past Tsonga to take it to 6-6. And Tsonga converts his break point, pushing Ruud around the back of the court before nailing a forehand to the corner. Ruud saves them both with emphatic serves, the second an ace, and goes on to take the game and keep the second set on serve at 2-2. Tiebreak: Ruud 7-4 Tsonga. A soft Tsonga forehand into the net gifts Ruud a point on his serve and an even flimsier attempted drop shot drifts out to hand Ruud the break. The Frenchman goes on to hold, and he’s 3-2 and one set up. Tsonga is oscillating between the sublime and the ridiculous. After saving break point with a smash to get to deuce, Tsonga double faults to hand the advantage to Ruud, and the Norwegian capitalises! Ruud has taken control of this third set and is now two sets to one up on Tsonga. You have to applaud the way that he’s handled the pressure and the crowd. New balls, and Tsonga picks up a new racket on the changeover. Tsonga gestures to the crowd, throwing his arms in celebration. Tsonga leads 6-5 and has a chance to tie the match at two sets all.

Raducanu wins 6-7(4) 7-5 6-1 to reach her first ever French Open second round.
It felt like a hammer blow to lose such a tight second set for the younger woman and so it proved. Initially, the Simonne Mathieu crowd had been right behind Raducanu, but with the prospect of home entertainer Benoit Paire waiting in the wings, they sensed a deciding set could rob them of a chance to see him and the cries of “Emma” were replaced with cries of “Linda” (and some of “Benoit”). However, Raducanu stuck with it to earn the match’s ninth break of serve to force a deciding set and when she then took an early lead in the third, she never really looked back.

Raducanu knows she needs to improve on her physicality having picked up a series of injury niggles since her memorable US Open triumph eight months ago.
So I’ve always got to do it the hard way and I managed to do that more and more on this surface.” Still I’m not a guy that I’m going to come out and just blast guys off the court. I feel the same, but just my game’s improved and I’ve just got to keep backing it up every day. I’m going to take time grinding the guy down. “To counteract that I’m always looking to improve in all sorts of aspects. Raducanu, who faces Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus in the first match on Court Suzanne-Lenglen on Wednesday, said: “I think that it is definitely improving.

In her first-round contest against Noskova, Raducanu went 7/17 on break points. While Sasnovich is the more seasoned player, her record at Roland Garros is poor. Raducanu trailed by a break twice in the second set, but fought back to level the score on both occasions. She won their previous encounter at the 2021 Indian Wells Open in straight sets. Sasnovich did not let the lapse affect her and won the next three games to wrap up a comfortable 6-4, 6-1 win. Noskova trailed 4-3 in the tie-break, but reeled off four straight points to take the opener.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga heads to retirement with a French Open first-round loss, the first of the Four Musketeers to bow out. French tennis eyes reinforcements.
He played for the 2008 Australian Open title, becoming the first of nine players to lose to Novak Djokovic in a final in Melbourne. I hope it will be the same for the French future.” Most of the other French players ranked in the top 100 are veterans who had their chances to make deep major runs. He also lost to them 17 times combined at the Slams. If not a golden generation, it proved to be an unforgettable one, with another memory added Tuesday. “There would have been no second match, because I left everything on the court today,” said Tsonga, who last week said his mind and body were telling him it’s time to stop playing. And now there is no more Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a leading French player for years who lost in the first round of his farewell tournament. Gasquet won Tuesday, setting up a second round match with American Seb Korda, who is 14 years younger. He is the lone Frenchman to make a major final in the last 21 years. But that broad shoulder, which helped carry Tsonga to No. 5 in the world a decade ago, could not bear any more. In a way I finish like I want to finish.” Tsonga injured his right shoulder on an otherwise climactic point, breaking Ruud’s serve to go up 6-5 in the fourth.
While Tsonga lost to Casper Ruud in his final singles match, the 37-year-old will play doubles with Richard Gasquet one last time before retiring for good.
Tsonga departs having built a wonderful career defined by his athleticism, his delicate touch at the net and his instincts. Along with his charisma, it made him an idol for so many, such as Félix Auger-Aliassime, who was present at the stadium as Tsonga battled. He has suffered through numerous injuries in his final years, with his movement and his athleticism disintegrating as a result. No longer able to compete, Tsonga lost 11 of the final 12 points of his career. As Tsonga tearfully lost 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 6-2, 7-6 (0), one of the standout, most enjoyable tennis careers of the past 15 years came to an end. He banged his chest and rallied the crowd.
The Frenchman, whose career had been hampered by multiple injuries in recent years, fought for almost four hours before bowing out in tears.
I've never looked back but now is the time to do it," Tsonga told the crowd. "You have been an inspiration to me and many others," said 23-year-old Ruud, who was nine when Tsonga beat his idol Nadal on his way to the final in Melbourne. Tsonga had the physiotherapist on for a shoulder problem and he could barely serve in the tiebreak.

Alex de Minaur has hit out at the Paris fans who he believes went 'over the line' amid a deafening atmosphere on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
He enjoyed every second of it but there’s a line ... “When I’m getting told things by people in the crowd, making eye contact with me after I hit a double fault, I think there’s a certain line that needs to be kind of looked at. Amid rousing cheers and tearful tributes, France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retires after nearly toppling 8th-seed Casper Ruud in his French Open finale.
It was a testament to Tsonga the man, more so than the tennis player, that when the French tennis federation invited his former coaches to attend, seemingly everyone did. But like his compatriot Monfils, a 2008 French Open semifinalist, Tsonga had the misfortune of peaking in the same era as Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, who have 61 Grand Slam singles titles among them. In the trophy presentation that followed, Ruud said he didn’t want to speak about himself. But the tears kept falling, and his face contorted with emotion. Tsonga couldn’t mount a credible effort in the fourth-set tiebreaker. He called for the trainer, and the crowd fell silent.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has retired from tennis after a first-round loss at the French Open, marking the end of a generation of his countrymen.
As a new documentary makes clear, he remains an enduring source of fascination in France and did his part through the years as Davis Cup captain and French federation consultant to inspire his successors. Tsonga, who once boarded inside the stadium complex as an aspiring junior, is the first of the new Musketeers to retire, although he will soon have company. At the time, with his foot speed, forehand and youth, it seemed self-evident that Tsonga would experience more such occasions. But thousands more French fans eventually found their seats and rose to the occasion, in part because Tsonga rose to it himself, even in defeat. Djokovic was the first: defeating him in Tsonga’s only Grand Slam singles final at the 2008 Australian Open. But with Tuesday as a target, he found inspiration, and though logic suggested that he had no business pushing Ruud to the limit, he came surprisingly, poignantly close. He was not alone in the tears. “I’m proud of myself,” he confirmed. The grand and renovated stadium was barely half full when Tsonga walked onto the red clay in the early afternoon after wiping tears from his eyes in the tunnel. There is no exiting the arena gracefully through substitution, no convincing manner to mask the erosion of skills and speed. Part of the professional game’s Darwinian appeal is that there is no place to hide. Though he has beaten them all multiple times on the strength of his huge serve and forehand and attacking skills, they all have, more often than not, stolen his thunder through the years, exploiting his much weaker backhand wing.
Emma Raducanu faces Aliaksandra Sasnovich as the second round gets underway at Roland Garros, with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz on court ...
Raducanu reached the fourth round on her breakthrough appearance at Wimbledon last summer and as it stands she will not be able to defend the second highest points on her ranking card. Raducanu, who faces Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus in the first match on Court Suzanne-Lenglen on Wednesday, said: “I think that it is definitely improving. It was something Raducanu did not have to face during her US Open triumph as in all seven matches in the main draw she raced ahead into early leads and built on that momentum. But I am just focused on what I am here to do. Court Suzanne Lenglen has yet to fill up in what is the opening match of the day but it looks to be much warmer than yesterday at Roland Garros. I have a lot of points coming off from Wimbledon. But for me it doesn’t really matter whatever the situation is, I am here to play and I will play. Sasnovich then finds a good serve down the middle and that seals a comfortable opening hold. Raducanu and today’s opponent Sasnovich have met once before, at last season’s delayed Indian Wells tournament. Kerber is once again attempting to complete a career grand slam. Nadal will highlight the night session on Philippe Chatrier as he takes on France’s Corentin Moutet, who knocked out former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka to reach the second round. “I’m always looking to improve in all sorts of aspects,” Raducanu said this week. Another tricky backhand from Sasnovich is this time matched by Raducanu, as Sasnovich eventually drifts wide.
French Open's fourth day features Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz who are all placed in the same half of the draw.
But at the end of the day, you always have to turn your attention to only the next challenge." "When you are winning more matches and more tournaments you have better confidence. "The draw is the draw. It's a matter of luck or some other force interfering with who is going to come to which side and quarter and semi and whatever," said Djokovic. World number one Djokovic split from Marian Vajda after last year's ATP Finals having worked with the Slovakian coach since he was a teenager in 2006. Moutet knocked out 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka in round one.

But in the meantime, Sasnovich and Raducanu are warming up – I’ll start by watching them and, I think, Auger-Aliassime v Ugo Carabelli. My wife is away with the car, and I’ve not got time to run them over before the tennis, so I stick them in a cab. I just got a call from the office of the school attended by my eight-year-old; her contact lens has come out and she’s forgotten to take her glasses. Two terrific backhands from Raducanu, the second a clean winner that breaks the sideline, earns her break point, and after two more thunderous backhands, she uncorks a forehand winner! She takes the first set 6-3 and is playing very nicely indeed – Sasnovich started fast, but gradually, Raducanu has climbed all over her. Raducanu takes a fairly long break and is well in the first game of set three. I was thinking earlier in the week about how Raducanu’s superior fitness saw her over the line in the first round here at Roland Garros. Had any of her opponents taken her to a third set at the US Open the more seasoned pros could have seen off Raducanu as she tired, but that scenario never played out as she just swatted everyone away in two sets. Sanovich raises a break point, saved by Raaducanu with a booming serve, then another is repelled via backhand winner down the line, and another at the end of a long rally when a deep backhand forces the long riposte. ...and Raducanu only needs one, chasing in to smite a backhand cross-court that breaks the sideline! Shonuff, Raducanu frames a forehand, and Sasnovich now leads 3-1 in the decider! Meantime, Petkovic has broken Azarenka again and will now serve for a decider; the winner will meet Teichmann, who’s beaten Danilovic 6-4 6-1, and Barrere is fighting back having lost the first two sets against Isner, leading 4-1 in the third. That makes 15-30 and we end up at deuce, Raducanu then racing to the net to do enough with a backhand when a drop pops up invitingly.

She gets a break though, as Sasnovich misfires with a forehand on the Raducanu second serve. Sasnovich then nets again on the backhand, and Raducanu is able to escape with an important hold. But Sasnovich pulls out a brilliant angle to force Raducanu off the court, and puts away the winner into the space. Sasnovich almost creates a moment of panic as she recovers a smash, but Raducanu finds the volley to get back to 30-30. But the backhands once again open up the angles and Sasnovich puts away the winner down the line. Sasnovich nets on a running forehand, but then puts the pressure back on as she whips a backhand return onto the line and follows it with a forehand winner. Sasnovich then chooses to play a strange drop shot which Raducanu puts away to force the miss, and that sets up break point. Sasnovich finds the corner with a backhand return on Raducanu’s opening serve. She gets going with a one-two punch and forehand winner but then goes wide as she looks to repeat the trick on the next point, and then Sasnovich disguises another sliced backhand drop-shot to move to 15-30. And that’s a poor error from Raducanu as she frames a forehand on break point. She does so with a forehand volley past Raducanu after stepping up the court. Sasnovich wraps up the win with another winner, and that has been the story of the match.

Raducanu shanked a forehand to give up the first break at 3-1 and throughout the set, Sasnovich ate up the passive, loopy topspin from that wing.
