Nielsen finishes his career as the all-time games played and points leader among Danish NHLers. His 26 points at the World Championship are sixth all-time among Danish players. Nielsen finished his pro career with Eisbaren Berlin in the DEL, winning the league championship. Drafted 87th overall by the New York Islanders in 2002, the 38-year-old forward went on to play 10 years with the Islanders and five years with Detroit. Nielsen had 167 goals and 473 points in 925 games, highlighted by a 58-point season in 2013-14.

On Tuesday, former New York Islanders forward Frans Nielsen called it a career following Denmark's last game at the World Championships.

Frans Nielsen spent 10 seasons as a member of the New York Islanders, recording 119 goals and 230 assists in 606 regular-season games. Whether it was winning big face-offs, scoring nifty goals in the shootout, Nielsen was an exciting player to watch. Out of 21 players in the history of the NHL shootout to take 80 or more shots, Frans Nielsen’s 46.23 scoring percentage ranks third-best. I used the word “legitimate” as that was not his first goal at the NHL level. Over his time on the island, that backhand move defined him. It’s a weird feeling,” Nielsen said following the game Tuesday. “I know I took the right one and, you know, I’m looking forward to spend more time with the family and the kids, but it’s emotional right now.”
