Manchester City produces stunning comeback to secure English ... (CNN)

Manchester City produced a simply stunning comeback to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and win the English Premier League on Sunday.

With fans still celebrating, Gundogan struck again in the 81st to cap off one of the most chaotic passages of play in Premier League history. Its win against Wolves on Sunday proved academic in the end. City's victory comes ten years after Sergio Aguero opened the floodgates to a decade of success at Manchester City, scoring a last-gasp goal on the final day of the season to win his side the league title. While players ran to the tunnel, City supporters danced on the pitch and even broke one of the goals as a spine-tingling rendition of the club's famous anthem, Blue Moon, filled the air. Fans, many of which had their heads in their hands for much of the game, ran onto the pitch at full-time to celebrate winning a title race like no other. The host knew a win on the final day of the season would guarantee the title and, despite going 2-0 down, it scored three goals in five second-half minutes to send the Etihad Stadium into delirium.

Manchester City used a ferocious late rally against Aston Villa to beat out Liverpool in one of the closet Premier League title races ever.

Guardiola and Co. will likely be favored to pull off the first Premier League three-peat since Ferguson’s 2006-09 Man United squads next season. The Sky Blues’ six Premier League championships are second to only Manchester United, who own 13. With Manchester City finishing with 93 points and Liverpool with 92, it’s just the seventh time that the first- and second-place teams were separated by one point or fewer. In terms of all-time top-flight English championships, Man City are now in sole possession of fifth with eight, trailing Man United (20), Liverpool (19), Arsenal (13) and Everton (9). City ultimately needed that ferocious comeback to win the title, as Liverpool scored twice in the final six minutes against Wolves for a 3-1 win. “It was an unbelievable game,” Gundogan said, via AP. “We are human beings and, after going 2-0 down, the chances were just very, very small.

The one solace was that Liverpool — starting the day a point behind — was not winning, either. Still, the threat hung in the air: If Liverpool scored another and beat Wolves, and Pep Guardiola’s side did not find a way to win, the title would slip from City’s grasp. With 15 minutes to go on Sunday, the final day of the season, Manchester City was two goals down to Aston Villa, and its Etihad Stadium was full of silence and dread.

City was fined €10 million ($12 million) in 2020 for obstructing a UEFA investigation into its finances following leaks of internal correspondence at the club. Yet, City was able to break the British transfer record to sign Jack Grealish for 100 million pounds ($139 million) even though the midfielder only started sparingly. The teams entered the final round on Sunday with City 32 points ahead of United and with Liverpool the greater threat to Guardiola’s side. City was trailing 2-0 to Villa until İlkay Gündoğan began the comeback in the 76th. In the last five seasons, the only time City didn’t win the trophy was when Liverpool’s 30-year title drought ended in 2020. Pep Guardiola’s defense of the trophy was secured on the final day in a more jittery way than expected when City briefly had a 14-point lead in January.

But we had to do the simple things and scoring two goals quickly and then having 10 minutes to score the third one gave us the right lift. Liverpool had been locked at 1-1 against Wolverhampton but Mohamed Salah then put the second-place team 2-1 in front in the 84th minute. The importance of that goal became clearer moments later.

1-0 to Leeds over Brentford! It's a penalty for the Brazilian, and he finishes with class! The title race is on a knife's edge, so anything could tip it to Liverpool. Its was an easy finish for Kane as Bentencur gets his second assist of the match. Diogo Jota leaves the match and Liverpool will push for a winner. After a miss only minutes before, Dejan Kulusevski gets his second goal of the match. This may be a rotated Everton team with nothing to play for but if they can put in a performance this poor with any collection of players you have to worry about what next season brings. The relegation battle is a goal away from swinging Burnley's way! Leeds had taken the lead, conceded and then got a clinching goal in the 94th minute from Jack Harrison to wrap it up. Here's how the qualification looks for European competitions thanks to the final standings. Mohamed Salah has scored for Liverpool after Matip's header was cleared off the line. Burnley losing meant a draw would have been enough for Leeds, but they left no doubt, ending a five-match winless streak at the most opportune time. With Liverpool beating Wolves, 3-1, City had to win to avoid seeing their title rivals claim glory, and they delivered when it looked like it was slipping away.

Manchester City fought back from two goals down to beat Aston Villa and pip Liverpool to one of the closest-fought Premier League titles in memory.

For all the beautiful, hypnotic football played by Guardiola's team this season, City, a shadow of themselves for three quarters of the game, provided evidence of their resilience when they needed it most. "The players were remarkable for 70 minutes," said Gerrard. "Everything we asked of them they did and more. It was nothing compared to the celebrations at the end. The atmosphere inside the Etihad Stadium had already started to become fraught when Lucas Digne crossed for his opposite full-back Cash to head past Ederson and stun the home fans just before half-time. When Philippe Coutinho, once Anfield's favourite son, scored Villa's second in the 69th minute, some home fans decided it was time to leave. Ten years on from that unforgettable moment from Sergio Aguero at Queen's Park Rangers, City picked themselves up off the floor again and mustered another late comeback to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and clinch the Premier League title.

Manchester City has successfully defended its Premier League title by beating Aston Villa 3-2 on the final day of the season.

“The season was so close, so tight,” Klopp said. “I can imagine it was much worse for the people at home watching on their tellies," Klopp said. Once the field was cleared, the Premier League trophy could be handed to City for the sixth time in 11 seasons. It took İlkay Gündoğan’s header to begin the comeback in the 76th and Rodri equalized two minutes later by striking from the edge of the penalty area, placing the ball through a tight gap into the bottom corner. Liverpool — the only team to disrupt City's run of titles since 2018 with its 2020 success — had to settle for second place. Soon the stadium was cloaked in blue smoke.

In some ways, it was nice of them to not drag it out. This is still when it was all slipping away for City, and they’re inch-perfect to prevent it from doing so. And yet as soon as the first one went in, you could see the resignation go through the entire Villa team. And once the blood starts gushing, there isn’t a tourniquet to be found. Using water as the resistance method means it’s easier to adjust, lighter overall, and longer-lasting too. A steady build-up of passes in the opposing half, and then an open run and pass to a player streaking toward the byline just inside the penalty area, a pull-back to either the edge of the six-yard box or through it, tap-in. Forcing an opponent to essentially line guys along the goal line to prevent the usual assist and leave space for a shot from just outside the area. Of course, the complaint of boredom or repetitiveness is patently ridiculous, because it’s even more impressive that almost all of City’s opponents know what’s coming, and yet are helpless to do anything about it. In the league, they know they’ll find a way. And even if you stop that one method, and so few do, they’ll pull it back to the edge of the area for someone else to pass it in from 20 yards. There are roughly 12,000 clubs across the globe who would love to score 100 goals per season that all look the same, but when you need to throw stones you’ll throw them at any perceived weakness. It won City the Premier League today.

Trust, stability and breakfast chats: how Guardiola delivered another ... (The Guardian)

Manchester City are set up to serve their manager, and close contact with key club figures is pivotal to his happiness.

Exhibit Two. Erling Haaland is 21, a serial goalscorer, and was available at a bargain price from Borussia Dortmund thanks to his circa €60m buyout clause. His response was not to sulk but to get on with the job. Twenty-three – in 2018-19 – is the only lower total under Guardiola. This made the trip more attritional (City secured a semi-final berth) and three days later the side were at Wembley to play Liverpool again, for a place in the FA Cup final (they lost 3-2). Then, after three victorious league games (Brighton, Watford and Leeds) and the home semi-final leg against Real Madrid, it was back to the Spanish capital. Publicly Guardiola’s mantra is that he has to win or the bell will toll for his tenure. Guardiola was not convinced that a 36-year-old was right for the side and so no move was made. But, although defeats are detested, more important to him is how the side perform because this is a function of the stability he and the club have in place. If this season is rated City’s finest for the excellence almost from first whistle to last, there is a recognition that for Guardiola and his staff the closing month or so was perhaps the toughest. The Guardian has been told the latter characteristic, in particular, is a great strength because it allows a sixth sense regarding his players, his side, the opponent and the sport. This is the story of a Manchester City title triumph that is about trust, faith, mutual respect, working in concert and, most of all, excellence. Guardiola is a man of high intelligence and sensitivity. It could not have had Sunday’s happiest of endings without Guardiola’s close relationship with Khaldoon al-Mubarak, the chairman, with whom he speaks before and after every match.

Five Things We Learned: Manchester City 3-2 Aston Villa (Premier ... (Sports Illustrated)

Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions after a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory against Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

Firstly, Fernandinho getting physically ousted by Ollie Watkins was out of the equation through his replacement. It wouldn’t come as a surprise to discover that the footballing gods may well have conjured up a game solely for the purpose of debunking a horrifically misguided theory, as Manchester City’s comeback sits on the same table as some of the best fight-backs in the division’s storied history. For a manager that is often on the receiving end of groans from a majority of Manchester City supporters for being economical with his substitutions, this was a mini-victory for the anti-narrative. For Rodri to not only be an insurmountable defensive presence as a lone number six, as well as being a faultless passing hub, his knack for standing tall in the biggest of moments from day one of the season is what possibly sets him apart from the rest. With Manchester City always being a Kyle Walker injury away from not having the best defensive right-back at their disposal, it may be a more astute plan of action for the club to target a player belonging to a similar profile to act as an understudy to the Englishman in the summer, considering ongoing links to Brighton’s Marc Cucurella. Unlike the callous Joao Cancelo - whose biggest weakness was on show in terms of being an excessive risk-taker in possession - the Ukrainian’s decision-making was dictated by the momentum of the contest, restoring a much-needed sense of control in to Manchester City’s build-up.

Player ratings for Manchester City's Premier League title winners (The Guardian)

Two of Pep Guardiola's squad are awarded 10 out of 10 for their contributions to the club's fourth title in five seasons.

Eight goals from a player signed as a centre-forward is far too low and continues a pattern: in six seasons the Brazilian has managed double figures only twice, registering a high of 14 in 2019-20 and 13 two years before. An undesired penchant for missing chances remains but Sterling can be a game-winner who this season has reverted to the driving-at-defenders forward of his earlier days at City. 8 But factor in how he can operate across attack and in midfield and how Guardiola often plumps for him as the false 9 and a richer understanding is allowed of a footballer whose ability to dazzle can suck the air from any onlooker. From full-back (mainly the left flank) Cancelo is a creative force with an eye for a pass and his geometric awareness of traffic and space is Toni Kroos-like. If Cancelo can be caught out via a quick counterattack this is a byproduct of City’s high line. What he offers is metronomic reliability and a teak-tough mentality: how the Ukrainian has performed so superbly during the harrowing invasion of his homeland by Russia is admirable. This is credit, too, to the rest of the rearguard and the attacking players: the 83 goals scored in 2020-21 has been eclipsed with 99.

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City's sky blue wash will define this era (The Guardian)

The manager has become central to Manchester City's approach of setting about elite sport like a political project.

But this has also been their era, in the most far-reaching sense. Nobody was prepared for the changes wrought by this entirely different model, this entirely different set of motivations. He is now part of a tiny group – Chapman, Busby, Bill Shankly and Arsène Wenger spring to mind – whose success has also changed the way football is played, coached and understood in this country. But it does also deserve to be judged as something more than a set of buildings and a payroll. Four titles in six years: even taking out the Premier League premium that says the thing that has just happened is the only thing that has ever happened, this is one of the great title-winning eras in English football history. At the time there was a degree of mockery. That tactical influence is the most obvious part of the Pep supremacy. It is easy to take for granted the influence exerted over that time. It has been a kind of total football, the domination of every metric, a sky blue wash applied across every surface of elite English football. And, looking back, the first six years of Guardiola at City have their own very distinct tone and texture. Erling Haaland’s arrival suggests a different kind of rebuild in the offing. Within six minutes of that opening act Pep Guardiola’s champions had completed the most beautifully orderly emergency comeback in English footballing history.

But a football season is one very long season. With tiring bodies, mental fatigue, and a very demanding schedule, City’s fortunes in all competitions in the second half of the season waned.
