2022 French Open women's odds, predictions, best bets: Tennis ... (CBSSports.com)

Gavin Mair, who called long shot winners of three grand slam women's titles, released his 2022 French Open picks for the women's draw.

One of Mair's surprising 2022 French Open picks is that he likes the value of Bianca Andreescu at 20-1. So who wins the French Open 2022? From there, Andreescu has pedigree as the 2019 U.S. Open champion, and she won that event in her first appearance, toppling Serena Williams in the final. He also correctly backed Barbora Krejcikova in the 2021 French Open final. Before making any 2022 French Open picks, be sure to check out the latest tennis predictions from SportsLine's Gavin Mair. Roland Garros is the center of the tennis world in late May and early June, with the action beginning early on Sunday morning.

“Definitely thinking to go back to Challenger level now for maybe one or two tournaments. The French Open began with two notable defeats: 2020 U.S. Open men’s champion Dominic Thiem was eliminated in his 10th consecutive tour-level loss since returning from a wrist injury. “In practice was really decent already the forehand, but then match situation is something different, Grand Slam especially, I’m obviously a little bit more tight, more nervous and obviously the whole body gets more tight, gets more nervous and right now that’s toxic to my forehand because I’m still missing the fine feeling there.

Will Rafa Nadal pull off another feat of clay? 21 dominating numbers ... (ESPN)

There are numbers, then there are numbers. As Rafael Nadal takes to the court at the 2022 French Open, we take a look at 21 legendary numbers from the King ...

1,051 -- Nadal has 1,051 wins in his career as of May 22. 13 -- Nadal has won a staggering 13 French Open titles, a record at any single tournament in the Open era. 24 -- At the age of 24, Nadal became the youngest player ever to complete a career Grand Slam. He defeated Djokovic in four sets at the 2010 US Open to capture the achievement. The two could meet next in the French Open quarterfinals. In the 2022 French Open, he will look to move closer to the record of 31 held by both Federer and Djokovic. 15 -- Nadal turned pro at age 15 in 2001. 2 -- Nadal has also won two Olympic gold medals: in singles in 2008 and in doubles in 2016. They have met in nine Grand Slam finals, with Nadal winning on six occasions. Oddly enough, they have never played against one another at the US Open, in any round. The event, which takes place in November, features the world's best eight qualified singles players and doubles teams and is set up in a round-robin format. 11 -- Being partners on the court with Nadal pays off. 3 -- Well, the Big Three. More specifically: Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have dominated men's tennis for a generation.

And after just a few weeks of preparation and a single tournament, Nadal won the Australian Open in January, showing the world once more that counting him out is a terrible idea. Also, he said that the results from the last two months mattered more than titles won a long time ago. “Things can change quick,” Nadal said, though neither he nor anyone else can say with any certainty that they will. “It’s something that we haven’t seen for sure in a long time.” Mueller-Weiss Syndrome, the degenerative foot condition that Nadal has had since childhood, prevented him from playing for most of the rest of the year. It has been a long time since Nadal showed up in Paris and this tournament was not his to lose. Nadal is 105-3 at Roland Garros. He has won 13 singles titles, the first coming half a lifetime ago, in 2005. He embarrassed Djokovic, 6-0, 6-2, 7-5, in the final. Nine months later, though, Djokovic got revenge, breaking Nadal’s spirit and his body during an epic four-set semifinal on his way to the championship. He is the only player in the field with a 9-foot silver statue on these grounds. His knees are often on the edge of balky. Which version of the 13-time champion of this tournament will show up?

“The key is just to continue being patient, work on the stuff which is not working and then it will come back, but it will take time,” he said. At times he snapped forehands well long early in the point and other times he set up short balls only to miss the easiest shot of the rally. As he fell meekly to Dellien, the 87th-ranked Bolivian clay courter put an arm around Thiem and gave him some supportive words at the net. Since returning from a nine-month injury layoff due to a right wrist injury and various complications, Thiem has now lost all of his seven matches back, winning just two sets between them. Just two hours into the tournament on Sunday afternoon, Thiem suffered a disappointing and at times hard to watch first-round defeat to Hugo Dellien of Bolivia, who easily beat him 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. There was once a time, not very long ago at all, when Dominic Thiem was better placed than anyone else to emerge as the next new champion on these grounds.

Amanda Anisimova knocked her out of a second straight Grand Slam event.

But Anisimova, tall and with a taste for risk, has had a lot more success at Roland Garros so far than Osaka. As a 17-year-old, Anisimova reached the semifinals in 2019 before losing to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty. But she has not been a dominant force on tour for well over a year now and has never been a dominant force on the French Open’s clay-court surface. Last year, struggling on and off court, she withdrew before the second round because of a standoff with French Open officials over her refusal to appear at mandatory post-match news conferences. Faced with a lack of background, they fined her $15,000 for missing her first-round news conference and made it clear that she risked being defaulted from the tournament and future Grand Slam tournaments if she continued to refuse to comply with the media requirements. Though conditions were humid and heavy on the clay, Anisimova and Osaka both have the punching power to hit winners in any conditions. “When you see Naomi Osaka in the first round, you don’t think it’s going to be easy,” Anisimova said.

Naomi Osaka Out in the First Round of the French Open (The New York Times)

Amanda Anisimova knocked her out of a second straight Grand Slam event.

But Anisimova, tall and with a taste for risk, has had a lot more success at Roland Garros so far than Osaka. As a 17-year-old, Anisimova reached the semifinals in 2019 before losing to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty. All four of Osaka’s Grand Slam singles titles were won on hardcourts: two at the Australian Open and two at the United States Open. She has never reached even the final of a clay-court event on tour and has never been past the third round of the French Open. Her career record in singles on hardcourts is 133-56 but on clay it is 21-17 and on grass just 11-9. But she has not been a dominant force on tour for well over a year now and has never been a dominant force on the French Open’s clay-court surface. Faced with a lack of background, they fined her $15,000 for missing her first-round news conference and made it clear that she risked being defaulted from the tournament and future Grand Slam tournaments if she continued to refuse to comply with the media requirements. Osaka arrived unseeded and having played just two singles matches on clay all year after withdrawing from the Italian Open earlier this month because of her left Achilles’ tendon injury. The French Open has changed some of its leadership, with longtime tournament director Guy Forget being replaced this year by Amélie Mauresmo, a former No. 1 player on the women’s tour who has made players’ mental health a priority. Last year, struggling on and off court, she withdrew before the second round of the French Open because of a standoff with tournament officials over her refusal to appear at mandatory post-match news conferences. She said afterward that she was leaning toward not playing next month at Wimbledon, which is played on grass courts, now that the WTA Tour had stripped the event of ranking points in response to Wimbledon’s ban on Russian and Belarusian players. She withdrew from preliminary events on clay but played at Roland Garros with her elbow taped and started convincingly against Parry on the main Philippe Chatrier Court before Parry lifted her game. Barbora Krejcikova, the reigning French Open champion and No. 2 seed, was also beaten on Monday, upset in the first round by Diane Parry, a 19-year-old French player, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. She added: “Going into the match I did feel the stress and the nerves a bit, because it’s a very tough first round. All three are in the same half of the draw in Paris, bidding for a spot in the finals. Djokovic promised to turn the jagged pain of having been barred from play and the pressure he felt from the backlash to his favor. He said after the match that as the roars rose like a storm for his opponent, he mentally converted the rhythmic chants to something that spurred him on — “Novak! Novak! The Serb followed that with a comeback from two sets down against Tsitsipas to win the championship. The marathon final win at Wimbledon in 2019, when he turned Federer away after the grass-court master held yet another pair of match points. Before adoring hometown fans, he struggled through the Serbia Open and crumbled in the finals. In the final, where he defeated fourth-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas, he took the opening stanza, 6-0. There were early-round defeats to the 123rd and 46th players in the world. But it was Nadal who notched that historic record first, ahead of Djokovic and Federer, when Nadal stepped back into the vaults of greatness and beat Medvedev at the Australian Open in jaw-dropping fashion. Then he seemed destined to record his 21st victory in a Grand Slam event at this year’s Australian Open, the major where he has emerged victorious nine times. Now, after a crushing loss and a vaccine controversy, Djokovic looks to get back on course at the French Open.

Naomi Osaka loses in the first round of the 2022 French Open (Los Angeles Times)

A year after leaving the French Open to avoid being fined for not speaking to reporters while battling anxiety, Naomi Osaka lost to Amanda Anisimova.

Azarenka is a two-time Australian Open champion who reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2013. Had she won, she would have been the first qualifier to beat a player seeded as high as No. 12 at a major since Raducanu knocked off No. 11 Belinda Bencic at the U.S. Open. I was trying not to think about it too much, but going into the match, I did feel like the stress and the nerves a bit, because it is a very tough first round,” Anisimova said. And even if the occasional rain that delayed play for hours Monday made the tennis balls heavier and restricted what Anisimova felt she could do to deliver shots where she wanted them, she was good enough to advance in straight sets against a top-flight opponent. “Just happy with how I was able to manage it and get through it.” He has also been dealing with chronic pain in his left foot. Osaka was unable to summon the serving or court coverage on which her game is based, in part because her practice time and recent match play have been limited. Her openness back then helped spark a wider awareness of, and conversation about, the importance of mental health. She tried to stretch the tendon by tugging on her neon yellow shoes at changeovers or by squatting to flex her lower leg between points. “I mean, I feel like there is always more to do. “But I feel like, as of right now, they are trying their best, and I think it’s really nice to see.” Barbora Krejcikova also was aware of the wide spectrum of emotions she went through herself at the French Open from 2021 — when s he was a Grand Slam singles champion for the first time — to 2022 — when she joined Osaka in departing in the first round.

As the French Open Begins, the War in Ukraine Roils the Locker Room (The New York Times)

He also said that discriminating against a player because of the actions of her country’s government was not acceptable. She said no more than five players had expressed their support for her since the start of the war. Swiatek, who is from Poland, which has supported Ukraine perhaps more than any other country, said locker room conversations, which might once have been about changing balls during matches, have shifted to discussions of war, peace and politics. “But on the other hand, the sport has been used in politics and we are kind of public personas and we have some impact on people. Compared with what she and her country have been through, giving up the chances for rankings points seems like a small price to pay, she said. Discrimination by individual tournaments is simply not viable on a tour that operates in more than 30 countries.” Then, after an early loss at a tournament in Marbella, Spain, and no tournament on her schedule for another three weeks, she realized she had nowhere to live or train. “For them, they feel like they are losing their job,” she said of the players who are barred. We feel that in the locker room a little bit, so it’s pretty hard.” The professional tours’ announcement Friday night that they would not award rankings points this year at Wimbledon, essentially turning the most prestigious event in tennis into an exhibition and punishing players who did well there last year, has roiled the sport, igniting a sharp debate over the game’s role in a deeply unpopular war and dominating the conversation at the year’s second Grand Slam. “I’m trying to find this balance between just go on court and don’t care versus try to care. Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine spoke emotionally about the invasion, saying it has made her care little about winning or losing.

He can lose and he can self-sabotage. He is not even a narcissist. He can lose the crowd. He is not a jerk. Monday night, he won his sixth straight match without dropping a set. Two weeks ago, Djokovic was without a title in 2022, without match play, without form and without confidence. He was full of gracious quotes, straddling the baseline between confident and cocky. Wearing France’s Lacoste and speaking French, he hugged back. Being cast as such exacted a price—on his mood, and on his tennis. The last time he lost in the first round: 2006. He returned with precision. He turned defense into offense.

Heir apparent Carlos Alcaraz 'ready' to complete his tennis takeover ... (ESPN)

To rave reviews, Carlos Alcaraz has won four titles this year and knocked off Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic along the way. Now the 19-year-old prodigy is ...

Alcaraz and his team are sticking to the game plan laid out in the "Carlos Project" and are looking at his future as a "long-distance race," Molina says. He repeated the phrase before winning his maiden 250-level title, in 2021 in Umag, Croatia. Before opening the 2022 season with a win at the 500-level stop in Rio, he told his coach he was ready to take the next step up. "He doesn't hit his drop shot as a bailout, he's hitting the drop shots when he's in the offensive position. He liked to serve, he liked to go to the net, he liked to do the drop shot." He wrapped up the third set in just over a half-hour (the duration of the entire match was 2 hours and 28 minutes). Moments before, he had lost in straight sets (winning just three games) to Nadal, his countryman and one of the greatest ever to play the sport. He had tweaked his ankle in a nasty fall in the second set, forcing a medical timeout. If nurtured properly, he has the skills to be one of the best players in the country. He had been playing tennis since he was 4 years old -- he'd hung a poster of Federer, his idol, on his bedroom wall -- but after his trip to Croatia, he knew that he wanted tennis to become a bigger part of his future. He felt confident, like he could show them the variety of shots he had amassed in his back pocket at such a young age. Since Roger Federer won his first major title at Wimbledon in 2003, and Nadal his first at the French Open in 2005, the tennis world has grown accustomed to seeing one of three players -- Federer, Nadal or Djokovic -- lift the biggest and most important trophies. The previous month, he had become the youngest man to win the Miami Open. In between the two, he tacked on the title at the Barcelona Open and became the youngest player since Nadal (17 years ago) to break into the ATP top 10.
