California police say 68-year-old suspect in church shooting was ... (The Guardian)

David Chou, a Chinese immigrant from Las Vegas, had a grievance with the Taiwanese community, officials say.

Laguna Woods, where the shooting occurred, was built as a senior living community and later became a city. “It was amazing how brave (Chang) and the others were,” he said. Fellow congregants told Chen that when the gunman stopped to reload, Pastor Chang hit him on the head with a chair. The US has seen multiple shootings inside houses of worship in recent years. Chang, a beloved and respected community member, moved back to Taiwan two years ago, Chen said, adding that this was his first time back in the US. Then he heard the gunshots and ran out to the parking lot. Those wounded by gunshots included four Asian men, ages 66, 75, 82 and 92, and an 86-year-old Asian woman, the sheriff’s department said. China claims Taiwan is a part of its national territory and has not ruled out force to bring the island under its rule. Peeking around the corner, he saw people running and hiding under tables. He had also placed four molotov cocktail-like devices inside the church, the sheriff said. More people could have died in the Laguna Woods church shooting on Saturday were it not for churchgoers, authorities said. The violence in Irvine, about 50 miles south-east of Los Angeles, unfolded amid a weekend of horrific gun violence across America, including in Buffalo where an 18-year-old white supremacist killed 10 people at a grocery store in a predominantly Black neighborhood.

Watchdog report scrutinizes GOP lawmaker's claim that he was ... (Politico)

POLITICO has first obtained an inspector general report that details what happened when a Capitol Police officer entered Rep. Troy Nehls' office and took a ...

The inspector general concluded that the officer who took the photo should have filled out a different type of report for his supervisors, and that the department needed to update procedures on finding open office doors. Later that night, a Capitol Police supervisor received a report of the incident and a photo of the whiteboard, passed along through the private. Additionally, the sergeant told the inspector general that Capitol Police’s mission is to protect members of Congress, not to investigate them. After leaving Nehls’ office and locking the door, he showed the photo to his supervisor and another sergeant. The three officers went to Nehls’ office, where the lead officer knocked on the door, introduced himself to the legislative assistant who answered and said he was following up on the report from two days prior. And while some sergeants found the whiteboards’ contents notable, at least one sergeant thought the officer who entered Nehls’ office handled the situation poorly. Since that officer’s work was “counter-surveillance,” part of his job was to dress in casual garb, which that day was blue jeans and a hoodie — not a disguise to hoodwink Nehls’ team, as the congressman had publicly speculated. The next Monday, officers in civilian clothing visited Nehls’ office and questioned a staffer about the writings, he said. The officer was doing routine patrol work of the Longworth House Office Building on Nov. 20 when he saw that the door to Nehls’ office was open, which wasn’t normal, according to the report. Nehls said at the time that Capitol Police had improperly entered his office, took a photo of a whiteboard and then came by later to question his team about it. But in contrast to Nehls’ assessment of events, the inspector general report didn’t suggest officers engaged in malicious surveillance or attempted character assassination. The new inspector general report, which POLITICO is detailing here for the first time, gives a much tamer characterization of events than Nehls provided.

Laura Ingraham, a fellow conservative network host, called Trump's endorsement of Oz a "mistake." Poor Countries Face a Mounting Catastrophe Fueled by Inflation ... (The New York Times)

Russia's war in Ukraine is combining with a global tightening of credit and an economic slowdown in China to sow misery in low- and middle-income countries.

It is typically expressed as the annual change in prices for everyday goods and services such as food, furniture, apparel, transportation and toys. Last week, the World Food Program warned that the shutdowns of the ports threatened to worsen severe food insecurity in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan. Collectively, they earn about 25,000 rupees a month (about $133), which barely covers the rent for their single room in a working-class neighborhood. They dumped the Turkish lira, pushing its value down roughly three-fourths by the end of last year. Last week, public rage over rapid inflation amid a spiraling debt crisis in Sri Lanka triggered the downfall of the government. The risks of upheaval look dire in Tunisia, Ghana, South Africa and Morocco, Oxford Economics warned in a recent report. Not least, China, long the engine of growth for many countries, has become a significant source of drag. “Do you think I can eat all of this and get full?” Here is what the increases mean for consumers. Everything is stacked against the low- and middle-income countries.” India is the world’s second-largest wheat producer and holds abundant reserves. Dead by Daylight: Designing The Dredge (PlayStation.Blog)

A conversation with Dead by Daylight's lead game designer about its teleporting, darkness-crafting Killer. Mitch Findlay Copywriter, Behaviour Interactive.

It always helps when a Killer’s Power allows for the possibility of mind games, raising the skill ceiling and inviting a good old-fashioned battle of wits. “We had to find a balance where the high-skilled players were scared and impacted by the Power while the newer players were not completely overwhelmed. At the same time, both sides are made up of a wide-ranging spectrum of player skill, making it difficult to predict how the community will respond to a Killer’s competitive potential. “When we did the initial playtests with The Dredge, we didn’t have the Remnant,” recalls Patrick. “It was one of the last parts of the Power to be added. And should it teleport to a locker while a Survivor is inside? ‘There’s three lockers in this room, do I really want to go here?’ This is going to be the Killer that makes lockers scary.” You could throw a blindfold on them, and they could still find the Generators. “It becomes an interesting discussion between the tech side and the design side,” he notes. On top of that, you must then consider the feedback we get from our playtests, which feature a wide range of player skill. “One of the first things, and this is something people don’t often consider, is that we must think about the technical feasibility of our desired experience,” explains Patrick Harris, Dead by Daylight’s lead game designer. For one, its Reign of Darkness Power shrouds the map in a pitch-black state, turning simple navigation into a matter of life and death. And while Dead by Daylight is most certainly a horror game, conjuring such a unique flavor of fear presented an exciting challenge for the game design team.

Elephants in Mourning Spotted on YouTube by Scientists (The New York Times)

It is difficult to catch Asian elephants responding to deaths of herd members in the wild, but online videos helped researchers observe the behavior.

Scientists do not yet know to what degree elephants grasp the concept of death, rather than just the absence of a herd member whose trunk used to be within reach. For a paper published Wednesday in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the scientists used YouTube to crowdsource videos of Asian elephants responding to death. Elephants in the videos trumpeted, roared or rumbled. Understanding more about how elephants view death could “give us insight about their highly complex cognitive abilities,” Dr. Pokharel said. But that does not make the animals so different from ourselves, Dr. Lee said. “We are not talking about what animals are going through psychologically.” The work is part of a growing field called comparative thanatology — the study of how different animals react to death. Younger elephants are often seen walking with their trunks wrapped together, she said. But it is rare to glimpse such a moment in person, as Asian elephants are elusive forest dwellers. Two young elephants used their legs to shake a deceased one. Asian elephants communicate with touch while living, too, Dr. Pokharel said. An older female elephant in an Indian park had died of an infection.

Orioles' Matt Harvey suspended 60 games by MLB for drug distribution (The Guardian)

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Matt Harvey was suspended for 60 games by Major League Baseball on Tuesday for distributing a prohibited drug of abuse.

Harvey returned in 2015 and went 13-8, helping the Mets reach the World Series, where he talked manager Terry Collins into letting him take the mound with a two-run ninth-inning lead against Kansas City in Game 5. He started the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field but a little more than a month later tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow and needed Tommy John surgery. After saying he was subpoenaed and testifying only because he had immunity from prosecution, Harvey acknowledged being a cocaine user before and during his season with the Angels in 2019.

U.S. Gun Production Triples Since 2000, Fueled by Handgun ... (The New York Times)

The A.T.F. released a trove of gun manufacturing data on Tuesday, the first comprehensive survey of firearms commerce data in decades.

The second was in 2016, during the presidential campaign. Gun production increased across the board during that time. Smith & Wesson accounted for 8.2 million guns produced from 2016 to 2020, 17 percent of the overall market, and Sturm, Ruger & Company was close behind, with nearly identical sales and production figures. One was in 2013, after the re-election of President Barack Obama and the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., which prompted calls for increased gun regulations. A relatively small percentage of guns produced domestically are exported overseas, so those numbers are an accurate reflection of gun-buying habits, according to A.T.F. officials. Embedded in the 306-page document was another statistic that law enforcement officials find especially troubling. Buyers capitalized on the loosening of gun restrictions by the Supreme Court, Congress and Republican-controlled state legislatures. The number of imported guns, of all types, has also been rising sharply, doubling from around two million per year a decade ago, to more than four million in 2020, a record. In the introduction to the report, Gary M. Restaino, the bureau’s interim director, wrote that the purpose of releasing the data was to “prevent diversion of these firearms from the legal to the illegal market.” That report is expected to highlight the role of illegal straw purchasers, legal buyers who sell weapons to people barred from purchasing handguns, and perhaps identify federally licensed dealers who are responsible for selling the greatest number of weapons later used in crimes. Her remarks came on the same day that Mr. Biden traveled to Buffalo to visit the scene of the racially motivated shooting on Saturday. - The Times Editorial Board: The mass shooting in Buffalo was an extreme expression of a political worldview thathas become increasingly central to the G.O.P.’s identity.
