Penguins Face Most Difficult Offseason in Sidney Crosby Era (Sports Illustrated)

After taking some time to regroup and take in the end of the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins management have many decisions to ponder and make. With all of the moving pieces that remain to be set, this is sure to be the most interesting and possibly roster shattering off-season the Penguins have seen since before Sidney Crosby arrived in 2005. And while his performance in the playoffs was better than the regular season, it might not have done enough to convince management to keep him around. Jeff Carter was given a contract extension this season by GM Hextall midseason, the only player out of the pending free agent group to do so. The first of which is Kasperi Kapanen, who will be a restricted free agent. He's made $3.5 million over the past few seasons and is in line for a substantial raise.

End of an era? Penguins at crossroads after playoff exit (WJXT News4JAX)

Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby (87) reacts as he skates past New York Rangers goaltender ...

While Crosby stressed his team couldn't just flip a switch and get going, that's precisely what the Penguins did in taking three of four to start the series. The possibility of Malkin and Letang returning comes down to money. “They're all different," said Crosby, who missed a portion of Game 5 and all of Game 6 after getting hit in the head by New York's Jacob Trouba. “It's kind of hard to go through all of them. Then a two-month stretch where they were arguably the best team in the league, followed by a limp to the finish that included three mostly listless losses to the Rangers. Not after a gut-wrenching playoff loss to the New York Rangers, when a 3-1 series lead ended with the Penguins being on the wrong end of the handshake line at raucous Madison Square Garden after the Rangers pulled off one staggering comeback after another. And for the better part of a month, Crosby did his best to block it out.

Sidney Crosby laments losing Game 7 and series on 'terrible rule' (SaltWire Network)

It's rare for Sidney Crosby to offer any controversial remarks so his critical comments after the Pittsburgh Penguins lost Game 7 to the New York Rangers .

"If you look at our group this year and you look at the guys that had career years and what we had to go through to get to this point, a lot of people didn't expect us to get this far, let alone get in the playoffs. That ended up being a big difference in the series." "But we had high expectations and we battled through a lot and so many guys contributed. Crosby is under contract for another three years and is just as hungry as ever to win another Cup so the Penguins will need to find a way to surround him with a championship supporting cast. We didn't get that next one tonight, that probably was the difference, but I think even when we had those leads we still played the right way." "It's a possibility," said Crosby, who won the Stanley Cup with Malkin and Letang in 2009, 2016 and 2017.

Sidney Crosby blasts NHL's 'terrible' helmet rule after Penguins ... (New York Post)

Sidney Crosby believes the NHL's "terrible" helmet rule played a role in the Penguins' 4-3 overtime loss to the Rangers in Game 7 on Sunday.

We didn’t get that next one tonight, that probably was the difference, but I think even when we had those leads we still played the right way.” I think that he loses his helmet, he comes back to the net and he plays a guy out front, I think that’s a nothing play.” “I don’t know, I think we played the right way,” Crosby said. “I think if you look at Game 5, we had a tough span of a few minutes and Game 6 probably an even shorter span than that when they got back in the game. “I think it stinks,” Sullivan said. I think that’s a rule made by the NHL that could be changed,” Jarry said.

Penguins news: Sidney Crosby drops truth bomb on future of core (ClutchPoints)

Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins had yet another early exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs after getting eliminated...

As for Malkin and Letang, both players didn’t record a point in the contest, which would be heavier for them to carry if that game eventually turns out to be their last in Penguins threads. The Penguins looked as though they were going to get over that first-round hump when they raced to a 3-1 series lead against the Rangers. Crosby and company throttled New York goalie Igor Shesterkin during that stretch, as they had their way against the Rangers’ defense. Meanwhile, the Penguins will have a decision to make on Malkin and Letang, who are bound to become unrestricted free agents in the offseason.

There are many who believe it could be the end of the Sidney Crosby-Evgeni Malkin-Kris Letang era. And it is not because Crosby is going anywhere or has ...

I still think Letang is one of the best defensemen in the NHL, and the Penguins with him, Crosby and Guentzel are going to be a handful regardless of the supporting cast. I only say this to suggest it doesn’t have to be the end of the era that everyone is predicting. All of that being said, I am not sure this is the way the Penguins need to go. About the only thing certain is whatever the Penguins look like next year, they will still be built around Crosby and Tristan Jarry will be their starting goalie. Maybe one of them takes a hometown discount to stay with the Penguins, but that seems like a long shot. The Penguins led 3-1 in the series, they had a two-goal lead in Games 5 and 6 and lost, and then in Game 7 entered the third period with a 3-2 lead and couldn’t hold it.

The Penguins’ layers were largely intact in the first and third periods. The Penguins had the lead. They ceded the top of the zone, creating space everywhere else as they chased the Rangers’ power play. He just didn’t look right, and this is a guy who fills the net in elimination games. Matheson took some heat on social media because one Rangers’ goal hit his skate and went in–the third such goal of the series. The Penguins won more wall battles, got to the net, and forced New York to turn and defend. Perhaps they were a little conservative, but they created more traffic in the neutral zone and slot than the Holland Tunnels on Friday afternoon. In the third period, they limited New York to long-range shots. That created turnovers and transitions for the Penguins. The Penguins have just six playoff wins in four years. Legacies and futures hung in the balance. Fling open the floodgates of speculation and debate.

Monday's NHL: Penguins, Crosby at crossroads after early exit ... (The Detroit News)

Sidney Crosby is well aware this could have been the last time Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang are among those wearing a Penguins sweater.

The Swedish forward became only the third Kings player since 2004-05 to score 35 goals and was second on the team in scoring with 54 points. He’s a lot more comfortable being one of the guys,” Kopitar said. Los Angeles was also missing a couple of significant pieces during the Edmonton series. Despite that, Los Angeles finished with 98 points during the regular season and finished third in the Pacific Division. There’s a lot of growing up that some of them need to do and they can do it. The Kings had 11 players see their first action in a postseason series. While Crosby stressed his team couldn’t just flip a switch and get going, that’s precisely what the Penguins did in taking three of four to start the series. “Experience is only good if you do something with it,” the third-year coach said after the Kings were eliminated Saturday night by Edmonton with a 2-0 loss in Game 7 of their Western Conference first-round series. “They’re all different,” said Crosby, who missed a portion of Game 5 and all of Game 6 after getting hit in the head by New York’s Jacob Trouba (Michigan). “It’s kind of hard to go through all of them. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby plans to play for three more seasons (Yardbarker)

Crosby, 34, registered 31 goals and 53 assists in 69 regular-season games in 2021-22, his 17th season since the Penguins drafted him first overall in 2005.

Ham has been an assistant coach in the NBA since 2011, spending two seasons with the Lakers and five with the Atlanta Hawks before joining the Bucks. The Hornets' search may be coming to an end. Give me the Avalanche on the puck line to make a statement and jump out to an early lead in the series. "You would need a player, potentially near the end of his contract, to come and say, 'I would like to go play in Philadelphia,'" Windhorst said. In a rematch of a first-round sweep in last year's playoffs, the No. 1 Colorado Avalanche hope for a similar result as they host the No. 3 St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, May 17th, at 9:30 PM EST. As I discussed in my series preview, Colorado is a heavy favorite to advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2002. Amick explained there is a belief that Vogel didn't properly utilize Westbrook and that if the point guard is going to stay in Los Angeles, there needs to be a coach in place who can put him in a position to succeed. Windhorst dropped a nugget about the Sixers possibly looking to acquire another superstar to play alongside the duo of Harden and Embiid. "I promise you that Daryl Morey has big, giant plans to acquire another star," Windhorst said. Houston is first in the AL West with a 23-12 record and have allowed 3.17 runs per game, third lowest in MLB. Windhorst didn't name any players in particular when it comes to the "star" the Sixers might be looking to acquire; he did say the target would likely be a player in a contract year. "He will continue to build distance and velocity in his throwing program, and we will provide an update on his progress when appropriate." According to a new report from ESPN's Ed Werder, Brees may not physically be able to play in at least Week 1 of the 2022 season if he is serious about ending his retirement. Allen insisted earlier this month he believes Winston will be fully recovered from the torn ACL and damage to his MCL he suffered last Halloween in time to start this coming September. Dalton will serve as New Orleans' temporary QB1 if Winston is sidelined. Crosby on how much longer he's planning to play in the NHL: "Three, for sure - and then we'll see after that.

Sidney Crosby was not cleared until Game 7, he and Mike Sullivan say (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

There are a lot of what ifs following the Penguins' elimination from the playoffs at the hands of the New York Rangers on Sunday.

“... I just sat on the bench for the rest of that period. Forward Bryan Rust, for example, has developed into a fixture on the Penguins’ top line, right next to Crosby. Rust is also a free agent this offseason, and Rakell filled that top-line role himself at times this season, so perhaps his return could depend on Rust’s. “I didn’t really feel it on that play, but on the next shift ... you kind of feel like you don’t have support in that knee or like your shin is slipping out, almost, like you don’t have pop or power,” Dumoulin said. Rodrigues was called for a roughing penalty, though it appeared that Lindgren played the puck after delivering his check, meaning Rodrigues’ retaliation would have been legal. In that scrum, Dumoulin was chasing back with Kakko, riding him into DeSmith. Dumoulin tumbled over his goaltender and slammed his right knee into the goalpost, hyper-extending it. Of course, Crosby’s was not the only consequential Penguins injury in the season. He revealed that his hip and groin “all went at once” on a specific movement in that second overtime. Our team doctors always have the last say in a player’s health and ability to return to the lineup, before the coach’s decision. Crosby was taken out by a blind-side hit to the head in the second period of Game 5 with his team still leading 2-0 at the time. The reason that is the way it is is because we have our player’s health as a priority, first and foremost. Wasn’t cleared for Game 6 but was cleared for Game 7.” Chief among them is whether the team would have even needed to play a Game 7 had captain and star center Sidney Crosby been healthy for Game 6 or all of Game 5.

It could give Crosby, Malkin and Letang a chance to keep it going. Or it could hit reset and try to retool around Crosby, who turns 35 in July but looked as dangerous as ever against the Rangers before missing a portion of Game 5 and all of Game 6 after taking a hit to the head. "Hopefully a little bit longer we can continue to play together. Letang pointed to his long history with the team as proof of his loyalty. They gave away leads in each of the final three games with a chance to close New York out. Although he stressed that money is "not a big deal," his next contract will almost certainly be his last chance to cash in. A four-time All-Star who also happens to have Hart, Conn Smythe and Calder trophies on his résumé, Malkin won't lack for suitors. "I'm ready to go away," Malkin said. He estimated that he'd like to play 3-4 more years and dismissed a report that said he's considering a return to his native Russia, which players often do toward the tail end of their careers, choosing the KHL over the NHL. "I know I'm older," he said. Both stressed that their preference would be to keep playing alongside captain Sidney Crosby for as long as they possibly can. While Malkin and Letang hoped to put off any speculation about their future until early summer at the earliest, they can't anymore.

Sidney Kramer, third Montgomery County executive, dies at 96 (The Washington Post)

Sidney Kramer, a businessman and political figure who won election in 1986 to become the third person to serve as Montgomery County Executive, ...

“Every leader in Montgomery County in recent years has been progressive, but he showed a conservative ability as it relates to financing needed to get the county on the proper long-term footing.” “Dad was very proud of his commitment to Montgomery County,” Benjamin Kramer said. Benjamin Kramer represents Maryland’s District 19 in Montgomery County, and Mr. Kramer’s daughter Rona Kramer is the state secretary of aging. As county executive from 1986 to 1990, he boosted funding for programs serving residents with developmental disabilities. "Mr. Kramer changed that because he cared deeply about the vulnerable,” he said When Mr. Kramer was a boy, his parents made ends meet by renting out a bedroom in the family apartment; he slept on a porch. Mr. Kramer was a former president of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, president of the Rotary Club of Silver Spring, vice chairman of the Executive Committee of the Montgomery United Way, director of the ARC of Maryland and a member of the Board of Trustees of Holy Cross Hospital. As the county’s executive, the top officer of the county government, Mr. Kramer provided the county with a relatively low-key, businesslike administration as it confronted such questions as how to manage rapid growth, rising school enrollments and increasing traffic congestion. In one, he sold liquor. “He was the right person at the right time in Montgomery County to recognize that the county was not only growing as far as its size, from the point of view of budgets, but also for influence it had in the state,” and its ability to absorb the growing and diversifying population, Cardin said. In the 1970s, Mr. Kramer began his successful career in electoral politics, winning offices in which he gained exposure to and experience with Montgomery’s growth and the issues associated with it. Known as “Sid” to friends, Mr. Kramer served in a variety of local and state offices from the 1970s to the 1990s, helping to oversee Montgomery’s explosive population and economic growth as it transformed from a semirural county into a bustling suburb.
