Night Sky review: Amazon's Sissy Spacek sci-fi is the latest cosmos ... (Polygon)

Amazon's new TV show Night Sky, starring Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons, might suffer from comparisons to Amazon's other mysterious cosmos show, Outer Range.

It’s almost as if in the absence of new ideas, Night Sky wants to be a Las Vegas-style mega-buffet of sci-fi tropes in the hope the abundant quantity will compensate for the lack of originality. The writers are meticulous about each plot thread, almost to a fault, as fuses are lit and extinguished within an episode or two. But the two plots bump awkwardly against each other in the meantime, and Sky often feels like two shows in competition with each other. To accidentally skip an episode is to think a portal has spirited you away to the back half of Night Sky season 3. To its credit, Sky wastes no time tying together the two disparate stories and tipping its hand earlier to how the two will converge. In the Yorks’ backyard shed, a hidden staircase leads to an ancient portal, a raw metal chamber with pulsating innards and a door that evokes primitive H.R. Giger. When Irene and Frank step inside the chamber, they’re instantly transported to a cozy observation deck with a panoramic window onto a gorgeous, if desolate, alien landscape. The pilot ranks among the best of its genre based solely on the strength of the lead performances. Alas, Night Sky is a television show with eight episodes, and Miller and showrunner Daniel C. Connolly seem determined to cram them to the rafters full of storylines and breadcrumb trails. Coming just on the heels of Outer Range — arguably too close for comfort — is Prime Video’s Night Sky, which is more charming and versatile than its peers, but is ever threatening to topple over thanks to its chaotic pacing and strenuous world-building. “This is our riddle to solve.” That riddle only grows more intense and more dangerous with the arrival of a mysterious drifter named Jude (Chai Hansen) who clearly has the answers the Yorks crave most, but considering the traumatized condition Irene finds him in, he has to prioritize recovery over exposition. Spoiler alert: No, certainly not, and the proof is Lost still being the standard reference point for elaborate, weird-fiction soap operas nearly two decades after its debut. Are we in a golden age of post-Lost puzzle-box shows?

'Night Sky' on Prime Video: Much More Fun Than You'd Expect (CNET)

Review: J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek star in a sci-fi drama about life, the universe and everything.

A few flashbacks bring us closer to Frank and Irene's relationship at its origin, wisely used briefly so present events keep flowing. Something about telling its narrative partially in a different language elevates Night Sky's sense of scale and prestige. The pair, sometimes reluctantly, pretend to be going senile, hard of hearing and ill to get away with their secret new project. A surprising split in the storyline sends us temporarily to a llama farm in rural Argentina, where Stella (Julieta Zylberberg) and her restless teenage daughter Toni (Rocío Hernández) face an ominous visitor of their own. Its modest title reflects a humility applied to all of its characters, regardless of the strange events presented to them. They make for wonderfully refreshing protagonists brought to life with tremendous charisma by J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek.

Night Sky Stars talk playing in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video ... (Hidden Remote)

Hidden Remote sat down with J.K. Simmons, Sissy Spacek, Chai Hansen, and Kiah McKirnan to talk about their roles in the Prime Video series, Night Sky.

And so I was excited at the prospect of working with her and then and then once I read the script and saw how wonderful Holden Miller’s work was, it was a no-brainer. And then as you read on you see, you know, more and more about him and where he comes from, and stuff like that. Next, as we reach the closing moments of episode one, you are thrown for a complete loop and the series never looks back. As they’ve kept the secret to themselves, one night, a young man enters their lives and flips their world upside down resulting in their secret being on the verge of getting out. Sissy Spacek: For me, I have a long marriage. Having seen Night Sky, I have been quite impressed with the world-building in the series.

J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek Can't Save a Muddled 'Night Sky ... (Variety)

Perhaps it's unsurprising that Amazon is all in on clunky technological metaphors. Following in the wake of 2020's “Tales From the Loop,” about people ...

It comes to lean hard on an entirely separate plotline about another chamber in Argentina, and a young woman learning to operate it (Julieta Zylberberg) — all of which is ancillary to the show’s main action, and told breathlessly even as it doesn’t seem to be advancing our understanding of what our central characters are going through. (So too, perhaps, does the fact that the planet they can visit is both gorgeous and isolated, a remote and forbidding landscape devoid of people.) That they’re forced to confront that from which they’ve been hiding when a stranger (Chai Hansen) comes out of the device gives them stuff to do, but the show can feel antic and unfocused. It should come as no surprise to observers of current TV that it’s eventually revealed that the pair are experiencing grief, and that indeed their using a magical device to escape their earthbound reality has a second meaning.

In the doc, women who joined the company (investing a chunk of money in the process) dealt with stinky merchandise, a toxic culture and challenges reaching financial goals. For those who aren't a fan of cartoons, Invincible could be your converter, up there with other adult cartoons like BoJack Horseman and Rick and Morty. Based on a comic book from Robert Kirkman, the creator of the Walking Dead, Invincible follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson and his training to become a superhero just like his father, who happens to be the most powerful superhero on the planet. If you're in the mood, this three-episode miniseries will sweep you up into a story of happiness and sadness, laughter and pain. On top of the harsh conditions and cabin fever, an unknown presence in the mist stalks the crew. David Myers (Craig Roberts) is a college student who gets a gig at Red Oaks, a Jewish country club, in the summer of 1985. If you're in a particularly meditative mood, reflecting on life, relationships and the big choices we make in life, Forever will gently set your world on fire. Buckle up for a brand-new animated series that centers on a group of boisterous, belching misfits called Vox Machina. Based on Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role (you don't have to be familiar with that to enjoy this show), The Legend of Vox Machina sees its protagonists go from broke bar-hoppers to accepters of a mission to stop evil brewing in Exandria. We're further introduced to the characters in a musical number that occurs about halfway through the first episode. This gem of a show from a few years back is easy viewing in the best way possible. The plot thickens when some members of the group come across a bag of cash. Paddy Considine (who now has a gig on the Game of Thrones prequel) stars as DS Gabe Waters, a counterterrorism officer tasked with infiltrating a far-right movement in West Yorkshire. Partnered with an excellent Bel Powley (The Morning Show, The King of Staten Island) as the young and inquisitive DC Holly Morten, he attempts to bring British Pakistani Raza (Nabhaan Rizwan) on board to uncover information about a possible terrorist attack. To really hammer home its dystopia credentials, The Man in the High Castle is steered by producer Ridley Scott. Fully realized and with a focused plot, this is gripping TV. The Feed is set in a futuristic London where a family develops an implant that lets people livestream their lives without needing to press a button on a phone.

Thursday Night Football: Will You Need Amazon Prime? - The TV ... (The TV Answer Man!)

The game will be broadcast locally in Cleveland and Pittsburgh as well as streamed on Amazon., But outside of Cleveland and Pittsburgh, it will be Amazon only. So if you’re at home or in a bar, you will need Amazon. That means you won’t have to stream Amazon in Kansas City and San Diego. You will be able to see the game on a local network affiliate via an antenna or pay TV service. For example, in week two, the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers play on Thursday night. Have a question about new TV technologies? In the markets where the teams are located, one local channel will carry the game. And if they do that, they are still not confident that the picture will be reliable. I’ve received e-mails from several readers expressing anger over the possible picture interruptions and the cost of getting an Amazon Prime membership, which is $139 a year or $14.99 a month although you can get Prime Video alone for $8.99 a month. They say they will need to spend thousands of dollars for new equipment to simultaneously deliver the stream to multiple TVs in the bar. TV Answer Man, I am a bar owner in Kansas City and I see the first Thursday Night Football game this year is the Chargers and Chiefs. I know the game is on Amazon so how am I going to show it in my bar? While live streaming has improved over the last few years, the technology is still a work in progress. Do you have to have Amazon to watch it?

All of Amazon Prime's Upcoming Original TV Shows (Screen Rant)

Prime Video has a huge slate of original shows on the way, including a Mr. & Mrs. Smith reboot and new Lord of the Rings and Neil Gaiman adaptations.

Like The Rig, Anansi Boys began shooting in Scotland in 2021, and it's still filming as of May 2022, and its official Prime Video release date is not yet known. Alongside Prime Video's new offerings, the streaming service is also bringing back numerous existing shows for new seasons in the coming months. Depicting Rio as a city on the verge of disaster means the series may be a darker, sharper satire than another current political show, NBC's Mr. Mayor. However, the tone of Elected’s social commentary will only become clear when the series arrives on Prime Video. Like the Netflix movie To All The Boys I Loved Before, this new series adapts the first book in a trilogy of novels, meaning viewers can likely expect a pair of The Summer I Turned Pretty follow-ups if season 1 does well. As information comes to light, his life and the lives of those around him soon become imperiled in the action thriller The Terminal List, based on Jack Carr’s bestselling novel of the same name. The Rig’s synopsis promises Lovecraftian horror in the vein of John Langan’s acclaimed novel The Fisherman or Stephen King’s novella The Mist. Like Neil Gaiman's source novel of the same name (as well as his earlier adaptation American Gods), Anansi Boys is likely to be a surreal fusion of fantasy, horror, comedy, and character drama. There are many new and returning Amazon Original TV series coming to Prime Video soon, and this is a guide to all known upcoming releases from the streaming service. To All the Boys franchise author Jenny Han also wrote the source novel for this show, meaning The Summer I Turned Pretty could repeat the success of that other frothy teen romance confection. Set in the near future, Elected stars Clarice Falcão, who also co-created the series. Follow along with this chronologically ordered list of all the known Prime Video TV shows on the way. Whether the couple will jeopardize their gateway to another world in order to help this stranger forms the intriguing narrative thrust of the sci-fi drama.

“We don’t have a one-size-fits-all sort of strategy on any of our content,” Salke shares about future release plans. In the US, The Northman costs $19.99 to rent in UHD from Amazon Prime Video. Or you can buy it for $24.99 in UDH from Amazon.

The Northman is a 2022 film directed by Robert Eggers, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Some editors at Pocket-lint also saw the movie and can report that it's great fun to watch. We particularly like how there is no romanticising of the Vikings. It is brutal, gory, and hellish. It's well-worth renting or buying on-demand from Amazon Prime Video. You can make it a weekend rental splurge. While it has received critical acclaim for its cinematography, production, world-building, and even historical accuracy, the film hasn't performed super well at the box office - so far grossing just $58 million worldwide.
