Sir Jeffrey Donaldson rejected the idea that Mr Johnson was picking sides in the row over the protocol.

It’s an extraordinary proposal and one that would amplify the bad faith with which the Tory government has conducted itself from the beginning of the entire Brexit debacle. “The Government has a responsibility to provide assurance that the consumers, citizens and businesses of Northern Ireland are protected in the long term.” In an article in the Belfast Telegraph, Mr Johnson said the UK will have a “necessity to act” if the EU is unwilling to reach a compromise in the deepening row over the protocol. “The Prime Minister is here as the prime minister of the United Kingdom. He is here as our Prime Minister, the Prime Minister of the people of Northern Ireland “If that is the approach taken by the British Government then we can make significant progress and we can make progress quickly to respond to the concerns of both the business community and the unionist community in Northern Ireland. “And we will continue to protect the single market, as it has been protected throughout the existence of the protocol so far, and the open border with the Republic of Ireland which will always be of paramount importance. “This is a time for calmness, it’s a time for dialogue, it’s a time for compromise and partnership between the EU and the UK to solve these outstanding issues,” he told reporters. He added: “The Prime Minister is here because it is his job to protect Northern Ireland and it is his job to ensure that we have the right to trade freely within our own country.” He added: “The only way to flesh that out is really to re-engage and have substantive talks between the European Union and the United Kingdom.” DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, following his meeting with the prime minister, said that he “set out in very clear terms” what is needed from the British Government in relation to the protocol. “It’s very clear to us that despite all of the rhetoric from the British Government about re-establishing the Executive here in the north, that in fact their priority is placating the DUP,” she said.

Sinn Fein President Mary Lou McDonald has accused the UK government of choreography with the DUP over the latest crisis at Stormont.

I will see that to the end.” "We'll also put it to Boris Johnson that there has been choreography between Downing Street and the DUP in this play of events. I hope the government recognises the importance of making progress. It is in fact the DUP that is holding everyone else to ransom and that's deeply unacceptable. I haven’t seen the government’s proposals. “I’m not going to speculate at this stage.

However, Mr Martin said he noted from the prime minister’s article in Monday’s Belfast Telegraph that he accepted the need for some sort of protocol. “It’s really unacceptable that efforts are made essentially to prevent the convening of a democratically elected parliament. It’s an extraordinary proposal and one that would amplify the bad faith with which the Tory government has conducted itself from beginning of the entire Brexit debacle.” “If that is the approach taken by the British government then we can make significant progress and we can make progress quickly to respond to the concerns of both the business community and the unionist community in Northern Ireland. “This is a time for calmness, it’s a time for dialogue, it’s a time for compromise and partnership between the EU and the UK to solve these outstanding issues,” he told reporters. It seems to us absolutely extraordinary that the British Government would propose to legislate to break the law. He stressed that there was a “landing ground” where the UK and the EU could achieve agreement on changes to the protocol – a message echoed by the British prime minister Boris Johnson during a visit to Belfast. That consensus doesn’t exist.” “It’s very difficult to comprehend, where we’ve had an election, that the idea that a parliament is prevented from convening – it’s very difficult to comprehend,” Mr Martin said. He also joked at the gathering that he was more popular on the high street of Kyiv than he was on the high street of Kensington in London, a reference to his recent trip to Ukraine. Mr Johnson told a private meeting of the Conservative Party in Belfast on Monday evening that nobody was satisfied with the Northern Ireland protocol and that it had to be changed. There is speculation the UK government is poised to introduce legislation that would allow ministers in London to unilaterally disapply parts of protocol, the part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement which avoided a hard border on the island of Ireland by placing a customs and regulatory border in the Irish Sea.

Boris Johnson claims planned Northern Ireland protocol law is ... (The Guardian)

UK prime minister meets Sinn Féin and DUP as Mary Lou McDonald suggests forming Stormont assembly is not UK government priority.

He said the impact of shocks such as Covid and the Ukraine war were more visible because they were more immediate. At a minimum it seems, without any delay, the assembly should be established, of course followed by the formation of the executive. He said the Bank thought it would cut GDP by about 3.25% in the long term (over the next 15 or 20 years). That estimate had not changed, he said. He said: “I think everybody should be rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into the government of Northern Ireland.” We would love this to be done in a consensual way with our friends and partners, ironing out the problems, stopping some of these barriers east-west. Gove wants the Lords to move out of London, which he says will be good for levelling up. Why should they be expected to pay for the failures of the energy market and the total shambles of government policy? Addressing the media in Dublin, he said: He said: “I think everybody should be rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into the government of Northern Ireland.” Michel posted a message on Twitter just a few minutes ago saying the same thing. We would love this to be done in a consensual way with our friends and partners, ironing out the problems, stopping some of these barriers east-west. Why is it that every time there is a crisis, rich men ask ordinary people to pay for it?

The DUP leader was speaking ahead of meetings between the Stormont parties and Prime Minister Boris Johnson later.

So, I will be telling him that very clearly,” she told the BBC. That hasn’t happened and I think the time has come now for action. That’s what I’m focused on getting, and as soon as we get a solution that removes that Irish Sea border.” “I think all efforts and all attentions need to be turned to negotiated solutions, agreed solutions, find ways to smooth the implementation of the protocol because it is here to stay, and I think that’s an objective that both I and the Taoiseach share.” “I want to be in the Executive. I want to lead for the people, not least to respond to the cost-of-living crisis but what we have today are repeated approaches from Boris Johnson to say they are going to take unilateral action to disapply parts of the protocol, and that is just reckless and madness. “I will judge what the Government does and I will look at the credibility of what that is and the impact it has in terms of removing that Irish Sea border.

Sinn Féin claims DUP holding NI farmers to ransom (Agriland)

Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has said that the the DUP is holding farmers in Northern Ireland to ransom by not forming an Executive.

“Most farmers I met broadly welcome the announcement that the Single Farm Payment will be issued earlier this year, however this will also lead to a longer winter particularly if the DUP continue to drag their heels in getting the Executive up and running,” McAleer said. “It is clear that farmers are caught in the middle of a storm with the spiralling cost of fuel, fertiliser and feed in the midst of Brexit with the uncertainty this will bring for future funding. “I attended the Balmoral Show last week and engaged with hundreds of farmers during the three days that I was there,” McAleer said.

'DUP is holding farmers to ransom' says McAleer (Farming Life)

A Sinn Féin MLA has accused the DUP of 'holding farmers to ransom by refusing to form an executive'.

“The DUP portray themselves as a party which supports farmers, now is the time for them to step up to the plate and get back round the Executive table with the other parties and get this much needed support to farmers without further delay,” Mr McAleer concluded. “It is, therefore, reprehensible that the DUP is holding farmers to ransom by refusing to form an executive and get much needed support out to hard-pressed farmers. “Most farmers I met broadly welcome the announcement that the Single Farm Payment will be issued earlier this year, however, this will also lead to a longer winter, particularly if the DUP continue to drag their heels in getting the executive up and running.”
