The IndyCar 2022 season continues with GMR Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Will Power starts from the pole position.

Will we make it the rest of the way? Cars that pitted for reds a moment ago are pitting again for rain tires, including the race leader, Herta. We're on lap 62 of 85. Top three runners -- McLaughlin, O'Ward and Grosjean -- are on the alternate reds. #INDYCAR// #INDYCARGP// @IMS May 14, 2022 O'Ward is second, Pagenaud third and the caution is out again! #INDYCAR// #INDYCARGP// @IMS May 14, 2022 A final caution, brought out by Juan Pablo Montoya contacting the wall on his way what would have been a finish somewhere in the top 10, took the pressure off and allowed Herta to cruise to the checkered flag. Colton Herta's lead was so large at the end that even an off-road trip wasn't able to derail his efforts this time as it has it so many other races. It all eventually ended up in the race being changed from a laps completed race to a timed race, just as everyone had likely decided on a strategy, making teams switch up again. #INDYCAR// #INDYGP// @FollowAndretti pic.twitter.com/itZ5H4RQdj May 14, 2022 "That was the craziest race I think I have ever done," Herta said.
Will Power edged out Alex Palou for the GMR Grand Prix pole as time expired in the final round of qualifying yesterday.
Australian Power is just three poles shy of tying the all-time IndyCar series pole record of 67 set by Mario Andretti. Power has won 64 IndyCar poles in his career. Will Power wins the pole.

Now it's time to focus on preparation for the Indianapolis 500." Overall, it was a good race and we should have had a good result." It was a fun and entertaining race but the outcome was disappointing." With Pato, we felt like red tires might be the tire to close the race out with when the rain stabilized but unfortunately we remained yellow for a long time and the track got saturated with water. There were a lot of decisions to be made throughout the race, with changing track conditions and choosing between the tires, so there were a lot of variables to balance. During a caution period on Lap 60 with intermittent rain falling, all the contending cars came to the pits for Firestone alternate slick tires. Herta led Pagenaud by 3.8256 seconds on Lap 72, and the race effectively ended when Juan Pablo Montoya went off course after making contact with the wall in his No. 6 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet. For the next 30 laps, this appeared to be a highly competitive but conventional NTT INDYCAR SERIES road course race, with three incidents triggering caution periods and mixing up the running order. The rest of the field quickly followed suit, with all 27 drivers changing to alternate slicks by Lap 5. The box score indicated there were 10 lead changes among six drivers and eight caution periods for 31 laps, but that doesn’t begin to describe what unfolded on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course. Herta, from Valencia, California, earned his first NTT INDYCAR SERIES victory of the season and his seventh career win in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda after starting 14th.

Lap 36: A caution came out for A.J. Foyt Enterprises driver Dalton Kellett, who slid into the grass and stopped near the fence. He managed to get his car into the pits, however, under his own power. Lap 6: The first caution flag came out on lap six when Chip Ganassi Racing driver Alex Palou, who led the NTT IndyCar Championship before today, spun into the grass in turn nine. The start time was moved again, though, and the race began at approximately 3:46 P.M. due to more weather precautions. Despite the dangerous conditions, the race was completed without having to come to a full stop. In normal circumstances for IndyCar races, it’s required that drivers use both alternate and primary tires during the race, but that was not enforced on Saturday.
