Baz Luhrmann's upcoming Elvis biopic aims to take the musical genre to new heights, with Luhrmann claiming it's the Apocalypse Now of the genre.
Apocalypse Now is arguably more famous for the extremely difficult lengths that Coppola went to just to get the film made than the actual film is with audiences. In the years since the demise of The Get Down, Luhrmann has been hard at work on what some might consider the biopic topic of all biopic topics: rock n’ roll legend Elvis Presley. Luhrmann’s Elvis will hit theatres in just over a month, with up-and-coming actor Austin Butler in the film’s titular role. It’s been almost a decade since Luhrmann delivered a new feature film, with his last release having been a 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel, The Great Gatsby, in 2013.
Director Baz Luhrmann called upcoming musical "Elvis" a "three-act pop cultural opera" capturing 20th century Americana.
“That’s the beauty and the tragedy of the movie — you see them rise and fall.” He was going to be in ‘A Star Is Born’ with Barbra Streisand, but the Colonel got in the way of that.” “That was quashed when essentially the Colonel thought, well, we’re just going to make more money out of you singing songs. Then there’s Elvis the movie man, and that’s when he is pop and family-friendly. Luhrmann continued, “The ‘Apocalypse Now’ of musicals is what I’ve joked about calling the movie — and that’s the ’70s period. evil, rebellion, and the uncertainty of fame, according to director Baz Luhrmann.
'Elvis' actor Austin Butler owes a 'thank you' to Denzel Washington, who helped him get the lead role of Elvis Presley.
“Honestly, I put him through the ringer, but he lived Elvis,” Luhrmann explained. It took me a few days to overcome the emotions as it did with Lisa. Beautifully done Baz, Tom, Austin and Olivia.” Luhrmann continued: “And then I got a call from Denzel Washington, who gave me a cold call. Then there’s Elvis the movie man, and that’s when he is pop and family-friendly. It turns out that Washington had a hand in getting Butler the part. Nevertheless, a nudge from an A-lister like Washington certainly put Butler at the top of the stack against any competition to play Elvis Presley.
