Ajax agreed to loan a few players to Willem II and settled on giving them a percentage of any future fee for de Jong, after failing to agree terms on an €800,000 deal. It's amazing to think Ajax secured his services from Willem II as an 18-year-old for the equivalent of a packet of sweets at the shops. Ajax managed to sign Frenkie de Jong for just €1 back in 2015 and there's a legitimate case for it to be called the best bargain of all time.

Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United reports premature? (We Are Hooligans)

Reports emerged on Wednesday night that Barcelona and Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong was 95% certain to be completing a move to Manchester United.

His defensive attributes, however, divide opinion. The latter, De Jong offers in abundance, with his awareness in possession, eye for a pass and dribbling ability well-known. Chief Manchester United writer for the Manchester Evening News Samuel Luckhurst reported the club are ‘weighing up a move’ for De Jong but described reports of an imminent deal as ‘wide of the mark’. Frenkie de Jong the answer to United’s prayers? A good barometer for the credibility of developments such as this is to analyse the mainstream media’s response along with journalists with rumoured links to both clubs. Following the two results, supposed transfer oracle Gerard Romero timely tweeted a statement declaring Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong was 95% certain to move to United within the next month.

There is no guarantee it would work out and this is a key reason not to sign Frenkie de Jong. There is also a ‘buyer beware’ warning, with Barcelona suspiciously keen to get rid. And is this really where United want to be, having to beg players to join? Maybe it’s time for United to try a different approach, rather than repeating the same mistake. Being sold would be a real shock, even to him. United held a ‘ transfer summit‘ on Thursday to discuss targets.
