A Fragile Stability in Moldova (Carnegie Europe)

Precariously located at the edge of the war in Ukraine, Moldova is thus far coping with Russian security threats. But the conflict's socioeconomic fallout ...

So if long-term economic assistance to Moldova is a strong EU priority, then some of the aid should go to Transdniestria as well. The Transdniestria issue can’t be separated from this economic headache, as the two parts of Moldova, though politically disconnected, are economically a single, if dysfunctional, whole. Transdniestria’s military threat to Moldova is much less than meets the eye. President Maia Sandu told the Economist, “We are trying to do our best to keep the country out of the war,” and that Moldova remains constitutionally neutral. Alone among the territorial disputes that broke out with the end of the USSR, Transdniestria has lived up to the term “frozen conflict.” There has been almost no violence since the war there ended thirty years ago, but the last month has seen an upsurge of violent incidents, with a series of mysterious explosions and attacks on infrastructure—mercifully without any casualties. But this is a case where the Russian leadership’s imperial ambitions far outstrip its capacities—currently at least.

Moldova celebrates Soviet victory, but divisions deepen amid war (Aljazeera.com)

While some fear Russia, others view Moscow as a saviour as the conflict in Ukraine comes closer to Moldova's borders.

He drew parallels between the Transnistrian conflict and the one in Donbas, saying that they were all called separatists and the repression of Russophone Transnistrians is similar to the one in Donetsk and Luhansk. Observers had feared this year’s celebration would worsen divisions, but Moldovans leaning West and East alike came to celebrate an important holiday – without violence or major incidents. “Even if I wanted to go to war, my heart wouldn’t let me, I am a Transnistrian, but if I go to fight for Transnistria, I will point a gun at my relatives in Moldova. If I fight for Moldova, I will shoot my Transnistrian relatives,” said Rus, who is Romanian-Ukrainian. “I fear that pro-Russian politicians here present a greater danger at the moment, compared to a potential attack by Russia itself,” said Mariana, the mother. Dressed in a Soviet uniform made in 1943, he came to honour his two grandfathers who fought for the Soviet Union in the second world war. “Russia cannot apply other tools, like energy, at the moment, while the Moldovan government cannot be tougher on Russia due to a range of structural vulnerabilities and declining popularity in the country, which the pro-Russia opposition is trying to capitalise on.” The Kremlin, in turn, alleges that Russian speakers in Moldova are being discriminated against – a narrative also used to justify its war on Ukraine. Back in March, Sandu applied for EU membership in tandem with Ukraine and Georgia. While her government is the most democratic and pro-European in the history of Moldova, many at the march criticised her. The Republic of Moldova, which became independent at the same time as Ukraine when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, has a population of 3.5 million people and is deeply divided between those who lean towards Russia and those who favour the European Union’s policies. “Today is a big holiday, we freed Europe. We as in us, the Soviet Union, in which I was born,” Sergei Izbas told Al Jazeera from under the city’s Triumphal Arc, adding that his mother used to bring him to Victory Day celebrations as a child. Chisinau, Moldova – Soviet hymns blasted from speakers in the centre of the Moldovan capital Chisinau on Monday, as the annual Victory Day march went ahead with a new war raging in Europe. While some fear Russia, others view Moscow as a saviour as the conflict in Ukraine comes closer to Moldova’s borders.

The Tiny Country That Could Be Russia's Next Target (Slate Magazine)

Monika Pronczuk: Moldova has three borders with Ukraine, and one of those borders is this thin sliver of land called Transnistria. Moldova is a former Soviet ...

Exactly, and that would be the same for the European Union: Moldova is a country where half of the population has EU citizenship. I feel the government is highlighting its vulnerability in order to get more aid and more support from the West. So this was a conversation, basically. Would NATO get more involved in Moldova? This would, break the main narrative, which is that the West is not getting involved in a non-NATO country. What I see for sure is the different position that the U.S. and NATO would be in if Russia attacked Moldova. This would mean that the war swelling into a wider conflict like. Putin is sending out his own messaging about what the next stage of this war is going to look like. This is the whole philosophy of Vladimir Putin: that this is our sphere of influence, our sphere of the world, and don’t you dare take it away from us. When the war broke out in Ukraine, the first couple of days there was complete panic in Moldova. Then the situation calmed down a little bit. The Ukraine war is very, very tangible in Moldova. It has turned the Moldovan economy upside down and disrupted supply chains. Transnistria runs along the edge of Moldova—and is strategically important because it’s pressed up next to Ukraine. It’s very close to Ukraine’s western edge, so observers think that if Russia’s war is going to creep further into Europe, it would start in Transnistria. In fact, some are beginning to fear it already has. It applied for membership with the EU and has been tightening economic, political, and social relations with the bloc. And it’s very dependent on Russia, from where it gets 100 percent of its gas from Russia. So if Russia wants to, it can just cut Moldova off from gas completely. And there’s the simple fact that everyday life in Moldova is reliant on “Mother Russia,” even though Moldova declared its independence years ago.

Local residents who support the pro-Russian separatists came to lay flowers. “This is a clear sign of our solidarity,” the ministry said. “That is a recipe for disaster.” Still, many Bulgarians share strong pro-Russian sentiments that play in favor of populist leaders. Bulgaria, which was among Moscow’s closest allies during Soviet times, is now a NATO and EU member state. Organizers insisted that Bulgaria should act as a conciliator, rather than arming one side and thus fueling the conflict. That will signal a bipartisan, heightened commitment to helping thwart the bloody Russian invasion. “And so the point is, we are having a very serious effect,” she said. ___
