The 2022 Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix is done and dusted. The most hyped and anticipated event on the F1 calendar delivered pretty much as expected ...

The F1 Miami Grand Prix is a vision of the sport's future. But if F1 cannot quickly find a way to narrow the gap between the haves and have-nots, to narrow the divide between those who attend a World Championship Grand Prix for profit and those whose only hope of seeing a race in person is a wing and a prayer, it will soon realize its business model is a blessing and a curse. They pass around the collection plate, and with a large enough donation will, for example, provide the racing worshiper access and a chance to breathe the incense of success, a blessing selfie, and to post how they saw the face of God. He was wearing Nomex with our corporate logo on it. ESPN is in the process of renewing its U.S. broadcast rights, and the best thing it can do is continue to take the feed from England's Sky Sports. ESPN, you cannot do it any better; please don't try. Meanwhile, the FIA—the sport's governing body—is trying a bit too hard to control the drivers. A big part of its appeal to the core audience is that it's not an American sport, and it needs to remain this way. The "NASCARing" of F1 would be its downfall. Athletes from other sports who have an appreciation for the hard work and dedication it takes for an F1 driver to rise to the top of their world came to see it up close. A 23-race schedule is right at the point of too much of a good thing. The F1 website promises you "Relationship Building Opportunities," "Social & Networking Environments," "Unrivaled Access to Venues & Assets," and on and on it goes. This is the F1 business and the business of all major sports from the Olympics to World Cup Soccer to the NFL etc. Yes, welcome to Grand Prix Racing, where 20 drivers race the fastest Brinks trucks in the world and everyone in the paddock sniffs out money like a truffle hog.

Miami GP debuts with largest live F1 audience on U.S. TV (Sports Media Watch)

Airing in a window that usually belongs to the NBA Playoffs, the debut of the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix delivered a record live audience.

Sunday’s F1 Miami GP averaged a 1.3 rating and 2.58 million viewers on ABC, marking the largest live F1 audience ever on U.S. television and the second-largest F1 audience overall. Keep in mind the USGP traditionally airs on an NFL Sunday. With F1 on ABC, Sunday afternoon’s NBA coverage aired on ESPN. The NBA game (Suns-Mavericks) easily won the head-to-head with a 2.2 and 4.36 million. Beyond the race itself, Saturday’s qualifying session averaged 953,000 on ESPN and a Friday practice session pulled 398,000 on ESPN2 — the most-watched qualifying and practice sessions since F1 returned to ESPN in 2018. Compared to the annual United States Grand Prix from Austin, Texas, the Miami GP more-than-doubled the audience of last year’s race (1.23M) and nearly doubled the all-time record of 1.37 million. Taped coverage of the 2002 Monaco Grand Prix on ABC holds the top spot (2.78M). Two of the ten most-watched F1 races have come this season alone, with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix ranking tenth (1.45M).

Red Bull's Christian Horner says American F1 champ is coming ... (The Indianapolis Star)

It's been 7 years since F1 had an American driver. 16 since one ran a full-season. But the path to fixing the U.S. drought in F1 is unclear.

It’s just about being in the right place, the right time and in the right series,” he said – Andretti isn’t so sure. But because he couldn’t muster up the money, he knew he was giving up his best shot at a possible future in F1 the moment he headed back to California. The testing opportunity he has with McLaren later this year should be seen as the exception – largely due to Zak Brown and McLaren’s role with Arrow McLaren SP in IndyCar and Brown’s familiarity with American open-wheel racing. With TPC, Herta will get to run an unannounced number of days in last year’s McLaren F1 car because of how stark the regulation changes were this offseason. “But IndyCar is incredibly competitive also – as competitive as any junior formula series over in Europe, so you should be able to make the jump. Their fellow competitors have nothing to do with how good Herta and O’Ward are, but for an outsider, it would be easy to look at that lack of grid depth and ignore it. And I would agree an American driver shouldn’t get a ride just because he’s an American, because you should have to be good enough. Herta tried to “play the game” the proper way. Oscar Piastri (2021 F2 champ) and Robert Schwartzman (runner-up) remain on the sidelines in test or reserve driver roles with established teams, waiting for a possible call-up this offseason. If America can produce one of the 20 best drivers in the world in these machines, then that would be fantastic. The phrase “follow the money” may have no better fit than the racing series that announced days ago it paid $240 million for a plot of land on the Las Vegas Strip to build its paddock for next year’s debut of the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Netflix’s F1 behind-the-scenes show ‘Drive to Survive’ has helped grow U.S. fan interest at a rapid pace. It would be a good mission for us to find the next one.” “But maybe now’s the time to start focusing on how we can include more people here, because it’s such a diverse country.

F1 Miami Grand Prix Breaks Viewership, Attendance Records (Sports Illustrated)

The inaugural race was filled with glitz and glamor, drawing in the most fans at the Dolphins' stadium and the largest U.S. audience for a live F1 ...

According to ESPN, that record is still held by ABC’s broadcast of the 2002 Monaco Grand Prix, which was shown the same day but was a delayed presentation. The Miami Grand Prix, however, was not the most viewed F1 telecast in history. The race aired from 3:30 p.m. to 5:36 p.m. ET, and ABC’s full telecast (including the 90-minute Grand Prix Sunday pre-race show) averaged 2.1 million viewers. But the record-breaking numbers extended beyond just television viewers on race day. It peaked at 2.9 million viewers from 4:45 p.m. and 5 p.m. ET., and for the age group 18-49, the race averaged 735,000 fans watching as Max Verstappen navigated his way to victory. Additionally, Friday’s first practice brought in 398,000 viewers, another record since 2018.

The two races went head to head Sunday, and it was NASCAR that took home the checkered flag.

Despite losing in the ratings to the stock cars, it was certainly a successful weekend for Formula 1. TV ratings have been a hot topic, rightfully so, in NASCAR for the past few seasons. The event became the second most-watched F1 race in U.S. history (live or tape-delayed), and also became the No. 1 live race. The numbers are in, and NASCAR took the checkered flag ... barely ... in Sunday's showdown with the highly anticipated Formula 1 race in Miami. While Max Verstappen's binary season continued, Fernando Alonso added only penalty points to his tally in F1's first Miami Grand Prix.

With his pole position lap of 1’28.796, averaging 219.415kph, Leclerc established the first benchmark for the circuit. Leclerc took his third pole position of the season but, for the first time this year, failed to convert it into victory. Half of the top 10 are currently racing in Formula 1, including record-holder Lewis Hamilton (183), Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Valtteri Bottas.

Miami Grand Prix Shows Flashes of What the Future of F1 Could Be (Sports Illustrated)

Racing fever swept South Florida last weekend as celebrities filled the paddock. The sport's drivers, meanwhile, saw room for improvement.

Money does talk, though, and it echoed during the Miami Grand Prix. The drivers’ safety concerns are real, but the ability to improve while keeping the integrity of the spectacle is there. But, there was a very, very, I think very good Grand Prix. The reception, the fans through the city, it was awesome,” Ricciardo said. As the sun sets on another historic Grand Prix weekend, fans, the media and teams walk away witnessing the possibility of a new era of Formula One in the United States. Although the race struck a monotonous tone after Verstappen passed Leclerc for the lead early on in the 57-lap race, the viewership and attendance records should not be given an asterisk. But all hope is not lost with the Miami Grand Prix. Sainz said during the post-race press conference, “I think, between FIA and ourselves, we can do a better job with the tarmac. Verstappen, who said Sunday that the race was “really incredibly well organized” and he “had a lot of fun driving around,” did point out areas that could be changed to fit an F1 car better. And while it has brought in a new era of fans, there has been criticism among the drivers, such as reigning world champion Max Verstappen, about the tendency for the series to over-dramatize. One of the major factors leading the charge in making this happen and opening the door for a new generation is Netflix’s hit series Formula 1: Drive to Survive. He added that with Sector 2, it “would have been nice if it could have been a bit faster and flowing for an F1 car like we have right now. Within a few hours of the Grand Prix ending and Verstappen holding on to beat points leader Charles Leclerc, the traveling circus fell into routine by packing everything up again for its next destination. Many wonder why it took so long for Formula One to gain a foothold stateside, but the Miami Grand Prix showed what the future of the sport could be while highlighting needed improvements to warrant continuing here. U.S. fans seem set to blow past that mark this year, as more than a million tuned in for the ’22 season opener in Bahrain, peaking at 1.5 million. It’s one of the most diverse sports leagues in the world, with drivers hailing from all over the globe.

From then it was a struggle to keep pace with Sainz but Perez marched on, doing his best to pry P3 after the late Safety Car restart – but his Lap 52 lock-up was the last opportunity Perez would have. It was a typically hard-charging performance from the two-time champion, and an approach that impressed our judges enough to put him in this week's top 10. Bottas was one of a number to crash in Friday practice but he too kept his chin up, qualifying a season-best P5 on Saturday. The Alfa Romeo driver seemed almost destined to finish there too, until Russell's late stop for tyres. Porpoising knocked his confidence and led to a Q2 exit, but a long stint on hard tyres saw Russell work his way into the top 10 and beyond when Bottas went off track and Hamilton duly conceded P5. Esteban Ocon fell foul of the tight Turn 14 chicane entry in FP3 and from then on it seemed like the Alpine driver's weekend was over, as he had to sit out qualifying with a cracked chassis. Max Verstappen leapt from third to first in the inaugural Miami Grand Prix but who else caught the eye of our judges this weekend?

How I learned to love Formula 1 at the Miami Grand Prix (Motor Authority)

It does, just in time, as the cars launch off the line and a deep rumble of shouts erupts from the crowd. “It’s a ten-lap sprint to the checkered flag…ideally,” the announcer intones wryly. For one Middle Eastern race, it’s sweet vermicelli noodles with saffron and egg; for Texas, a feast of bacon, barbecue, and onion ring burgers; with Italy, a charcuterie spread; for the recent Australia race, cookies and biscuits and candies from Amazon like the violet crumble (“it's the shatter that matters”). Bottas comes in low and straight across the curb on final Q3 laps, surging to fifth place in the Alfa Romeo with the Ferrari engine. Until Sebastian Vettel spins and almost gets pierced in front of the Porta-Potty sitting right in front of us, that is. McLaren’s Lando Norris told Reuters that drivers expected the new Miami F1 track to be “very smooth and beautiful, but it’s not.” “To have Formula 1 in Miami, I mean, in theory I could in the same week do two of my favorite things.” Contrast with Max Verstappen’s first pole position the season after his first driver’s championship—the first time that didn’t go to Hamilton since 2016—and Verstappen getting a villain edit like “Survivor” or “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” There’s so much to take in, but so much that’s out of sight, around another corner, we watch much of practice on a massive screen hoisted in a Hard Rock Hotel paddock across the track. By the end of the fourth season I begin to understand the minutiae of what can go right, and then everything else. It lifted the ban on drivers posting to social media first; then it created “Drive to Survive,” a Netflix series that follows the F1 circuit in narrative form. It’s the biggest racing series on the planet, with a global TV audience that accounts for about a quarter of the people on earth.

“In IndyCar you can change the set-up a lot and make it to your liking. “It’s completely wrong, as the championship has got an incredible level, and there is so much skill required to win around ovals and street and road courses with very different layouts,” he said. The route from IndyCar to F1 isn’t new, but it is rare for driver to make the switch and even rarer for them to do so successfully. “It’s a fairly different approach in the driving. But he added that this doesn’t mean that the IndyCar field is less talented than F1’s crop of competitors. When he arrived in the F1 paddock in Melbourne he was sporting a burnt-red hairstyle. “F1 is very specific due the tyres and their small [operating] windows. The F1 power unit is billed as the world’s most efficient motor and is comfortably more powerful than equivalent all-electric engines, but advances are coming thick and fast. The amount of energy that the battery can store will arrive, the battery will be lighter. “But the data don’t show these big swings.
