Mayweather Claims 'Easy Pick Up' After Winning $42500 From Bet ... (BoxingScene.com)

Floyd Mayweather Jr. proved long ago to have the blueprint to beat Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Nearly nine years later, the Hall of Fame former pound-for-pound ...

Alvarez ended a sixteen-fight unbeaten streak (15-0-1, 9KOs) with the defeat, having won titles at middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight along with a second junior middleweight title reign in between his losses to Mayweather and Bivol. The loss was the first for Alvarez since dropping a strangely scored majority decision to Mayweather in their September 2013 WBA/WBC junior middleweight championship fight at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Mayweather won on the scorecards of judges Dave Moretti (116-112) and Craig Metcalfe (117-111), while C.J. Ross (114-114) was rightly criticized for scoring a draw. Mayweather literally cashed in on Alvarez’s points loss to WBA light heavyweight titlist Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 10KOs), clearing a $42,500 profit from a $10,000 bet placed on Saturday’s DAZN Pay-Per-View main event from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The former five-division champion rolled with Bivol, who was a +425 betting underdog according to Silverton Sportsbook when Mayweather placed the bet at 2:08 p.m. local time—less than seven hours prior to the opening bell.

Canelo Alvarez handed boxing lesson by Dmitry Bivol to set up ... (The Independent)

The Mexican superstar was flat throughout the 12 rounds, with the WBA light heavyweight champion delivering a polished performance to defend his belt.

He has won world titles at four weights, regularly receives $35m for fights, beaten the very best and on Saturday night he met a man who refused to be part of the Canelo story. What a sequence: Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte, Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano and now Canelo is toppled in Las Vegas by Bivol in a fight to restore faith in a city where men are too often broken in the boxing ring. His career started in the saw-dust pits of Mexican boxing when he was just a kid of fifteen; a kid fighting for pesos in 2005 and now he rules the business. Canelo fought like a man who had been told to be patient and that victory would be his in the later rounds or courtesy of the judges. Bivol looked to have won eight of the twelve rounds and perhaps a couple more. However, beyond the tiny celebration that the right man did get the decision, there remains the fact that had Bivol not won the last round, he would have finished the fight with a draw – that would have been a heist. There were a lot of close rounds, rounds when Bivol’s jab could be ignored and the few body punches or wide hooks from Canelo, caught the eye of the three judges at ringside. Canelo was marked, grazed and flat at the end. Canelo has been behind in big fights before and done enough in the later rounds or found the punches to finish the fight. Sure, Canelo mixed his attacks, went for the arms, the chest, but Bivol never rushed his work. Bivol was too big and smart and Canelo knew it. It was a flawless display from the Kyrgyzstan-born Russian.

Canelo Alvarez can rematch Dmitry Bivol, but should he? (Bad Left Hook)

Canelo Alvarez could rematch Dmitry Bivol, but should he? That and more as we look at what could be next for both fighters.

Zurdo says lots of things, but also does things like leaving the company that has easy-to-make big fights for him to sign with Golden Boy and fight Yunieski Gonzalez and Dominic Boesel, so who knows? For what it’s worth, Bivol has already beaten Smith, but a rematch between those two would still be a big one if Smith beats Beterbiev, in part because it would be an undisputed championship fight. You can do that again in May 2023, and it will be bigger than this fight was, because the Canelo fans are going to be even more invigorated, hoping to see their guy get his “revenge,” and way more people are going to believe that Bivol can win. The Golovkin team would have been insane to allow that into the contract after wanting that fight for almost four years. I think he’s a proud man and would, if he were to fight and beat Golovkin in September, definitely still want the Bivol rematch. They’ve been in most minds the clear top two light heavyweights in the sport for a while now. It’s a fight we’ve speculated on and discussed and made predictions about for a long time now. He has to find the motivation in different ways. They fought in 2017 and 2018 at middleweight, with a controversial draw the first time and a controversial Canelo win in the rematch. In short, Canelo and his team wanted to make sure they’d have a chance to run it back at their discretion, if indeed Bivol got the win. And that’s because the story for many is just as much “Canelo lost” as it is “Bivol won.” And while we’re not paid by the click because this isn’t actually isn’t 2002 anymore, the truth is, to maximize readership, Canelo is the lead. He doesn’t seem delusional about the fact that he’ll never be as “hungry” as he used to be, literally or metaphorically.

Unbeaten Bivol posts upset of Canelo with unanimous decision (WTMJ)

Bivol seemingly took control in the fifth round, when he got Alvarez on the ropes and landed several punches to his face. Zhilei Zhang (24-0-1, 19 KOs) knocked out Scott Alexander just 1:54 in the first round in a heavyweight clash. “I definitely didn’t lose the fight,” Alvarez said through a translator. “I knew that he has hard punches and he will beat on my body or my arm,” Bivol said. “Doesn’t matter which one, first or second, doesn’t matter to me — I just wanted this fight,” Bivol said of the ring entrance. In dominating fashion, Bivol landed 36% of his power punches, per CompuBox, and outpunched Canelo, 152-84.

Dmitry Bivol extinguished Canelo Alverez in a 12-round tussle. The Russian was able to retain his world title with a score of 115-113, 115-113, 115-113.

He didn’t throw in a bag of punches in the 10th round but tried to make sure that Canelo chases after him. In the eighth round, he threw a couple of three and four punches on Canelo, gave him a jab, and returned to the ropes again. The time was running out for the Mexican, so he decided to go with the kill or die mentality in the ninth round. With the crowd urging Canelo on, the Mexican threw in a one-two at the start of the sixth round. At the start of the fifth round, the Mexican tried to corner the champion. In the second round, Bivol once again was the faster one out of the blocks.

Dmitry Bivol Delivers Stunning Performance in Upset Win Over ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Russian light heavyweight champion retained his title with a shocking victory by unanimous decision over the heavy favorite.

But make no mistake: Bivol is the real deal. Yet all week Bivol expressed confidence—a quiet confidence that he had the skill set to beat Canelo. And he did. A quiet storyline coming into this fight was Álvarez’s decision to switch to a mainly vegan diet. But is it the right decision? But there’s a lot to unpack from Canelo’s performance. Not since his first fight with Gennadiy Golovkin has Álvarez been backed up as often as he was against Bivol. When Álvarez came forward, Bivol kept his guard up.

He was a super middleweight.” Álvarez said he wasn’t exempt from the certain realities. He called for a rematch but won’t have a chance of winning that either. He pawed with his jab in the first couple of rounds but started throwing the punch with greater force and following it with straight rights. Álvarez was flat-footed and advanced in straight lines. Team Álvarez’s excessive confidence was visible in how Álvarez attacked. At 6 feet, Bivol had a 4½-inch height advantage over Álvarez. Bivol didn’t shake every time his arms were hit, as some of Álvarez’s lesser opponents had. Bivol gradually gained confidence over the fight. Álvarez offered lip service about the kind of challenge Bivol would present him but clearly didn’t mean it. (Smith was a part-time laborer who knocked a 51-year-old Bernard Hopkins out of the ring in Hopkins’ farewell fight.) Bivol’s signature victory was over someone named Joe Smith Jr., who, incidentally, owed his fame to a moment of arrogance by another champion. Don’t give any credence to Álvarez’s claim that he thought he beat Dmitry Bivol on Saturday night.

'I don't feel like I am king': Bivol preaches humility after shocking ... (The Guardian)

After his landmark win against Saul 'Canelo' Álvarez, the Russian showed he is not a fighter who goes in for bluster and bombast.

Bivol wanted to dedicate his win to “all people from a small, small city who want to achieve a lot – it’s possible”. It was a reminder of a conversation earlier in the week when he explained that his parents had given him a layered identity. He will fly back to St Petersburg on Monday. Hopefully Bivol will retain his charming humility and shy away from any attempt by Putin, or the president’s fervent supporters, to turn his outstanding bravery and skill into a celebration of Russian aggression and expansion. Bivol needed to be serious and concentrated in the ring because he praised Canelo as a great champion. Bivol, in his own diffident way, will be happier in the company of his family and a heritage rooted in Kazakhstan, Moldova, Korea and Kyrgyzstan. Those memories had framed our interview but Bivol looked a very different man after dazzling Canelo. “There were too many serious things in my head,” he said of his quiet intensity throughout fight week. Bivol conceded that war in Ukraine saddened him but he avoided criticising Putin by claiming that, as a sportsman, he was not qualified to comment on political issues. Hearn had helped to drive the $160m deal which Canelo received for three fights meant to happen this year. The 31‑year‑old Russian had just dominated Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, the celebrated king of boxing, in a clinical and comprehensive performance. The fame of Canelo runs so deep that Bivol, in a mockery of boxing tradition, was introduced before him. I don’t even feel I am the best in the light‑heavyweight division because I don’t have all the belts. Just give me the fight. Just give me the fight.

Why Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol rematch might not happen (Los Angeles Times)

Dmitry Bivol is open to a rematch against Canelo Alvarez, but the four-belt Mexican boxing champion and his promoter might want Gennadiy Golovkin next.

They’re slated to fight in June. Bivol could fight the winner for the division’s unification. But nothing in his career will top what happened Saturday, when he finally was given the attention he deserved. All Álvarez needed to do was beat Bivol. In the end, Golovkin decided not to travel to Vegas. That avoided some awkwardness. On the return of the Mexican superstar to the Strip on Cinco de Mayo weekend. Gennadiy Golovkin originally was scheduled to attend the fight. The lead-up to the fight focused on everything but the fight. He speculated that’s why he was fatigued at the end of the fight. He knocked out Sergey Kovalev in his first try, but Kovalev was battered and overmatched. Álvarez was stepping out of his comfort zone to 175 pounds for just the second time. By moving up in weight class to fight Dmitry Bivol, Canelo Álvarez crossed one line too many. There were no other signs of a 12-round fight against the consensus top pound-for-pound fighter in the world. His left arm was bright red from Álvarez’s failed attempts to crack his defense.

Canelo's Big Gamble Doesn't Pay Off Against Bivol (BoxingScene.com)

In the two days leading up to Canelo Alvarez's bout with Dmitry Bivol, the streets on the southernmost end of the Las Vegas strip were lined with folks ...

Instead, he chose one of the three best light heavyweights in the world with precious little commercial appeal in America, precisely because he was a difficult opponent. The “casual” fans in attendance, the ones who care about Canelo as a national hero and do not consume boxing content otherwise, were somewhat perplexed during and after the fight. Hindsight and knowledge of how the fight was scored makes the final round of the bout especially interesting. Foster is likely the greatest light heavyweight of all-time, but couldn’t excel in the sport’s largest division. It’s important to remember what this fight was—a brilliant fighter daring to venture well above his optimal fighting weight in search of a challenge. Amongst the broader public there was nary a feeling that Bivol was a threat to thwart those plans. The implication of “cherry picking” is that a fighter is seeking opponents who present as threats but are merely pawns in their overall goal of maintaining an allure of greatness. The vibe in the city felt like a festival celebrating a superhero about to conquer his latest challenge. Unlike his turns against other opponents however, he had difficulty getting close to Bivol, and was also never able to hurt him. He entered to the sounds of Thunderstruck by AC/DC, one of the five or ten most utilized entrance songs in boxing, placing somewhere behind the clubhouse leader Mama Said Knock You Out. Except unlike other fighters who want to milk the building drama of the track and stretch out their reveal, Bivol was in full motion towards the ring by the time the music began, and was already standing in place in his corner before the first verse of the song could even begin. Discussions were had during fight week about his chances against a 201-pound version of Oleksandr Usyk. The paraphernalia often depicted Canelo with a crown.
