Lewis Hamilton Threatens to Not Race in F1 Miami GP if New Ban Is ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Mercedes driver said he feels like the ban is “almost like a step backwards.”

I’ve been in the sport for 16 years and I’ve been wearing jewelry for 16 years. I don’t feel comfortable not having that in the car. In the car, I only ever have my earrings on and my nose ring, of which I can’t even remove. It’s never been a safety issue in the past. According to ESPN, Wittich’s clarification said: “The wearing of jewellery during the competition can hinder both medical interventions as well as subsequent diagnosis and treatment should it be required following an accident. The Mercedes driver showed up to the press conference sporting three watches, eight rings, four necklaces and two earrings.

It’s interesting looking at the top three and how none of them are perfect; Ferrari has been the fastest but they still have porpoising at the end of straights, Red Bull has been the best overall but still have reliability problems, and Mercedes has better reliability that either team but is noticeably slower. The Sainz wreck happened with 42 minutes in the session, and the session resumed with 31 minutes remaining. Valtteri Bottas spun out entering turn seven with 25 minutes to go in the session, and was unable to restart the car. The cars carry a lot of speed entering this tight uphill chicane, right at the highway underpass and easily identifiable with the walls plastered with Red Bull Racing advertisements. This is the fastest part of the track, and there should be plenty of drafting overtakes there. The next section after a mild left and right turn at the southwest corner of the stadium is probably best known as “the fake marina area”, with turns six, seven, and eight circling the now infamous marina.

Our data shows they are eighth in the qualifying simulations and sixth in the race pace charts. And there was more frustration on Friday in Miami as Valtteri Bottas lost the car in FP1 and spun rearwards into the barriers. But it was less good on the other side of the garage, as Carlos Sainz crashed early when running the softs in FP2 – having showed very strong pace on the medium tyres. Our data shows they are just a fraction off the best qualifying simulations and second overall in the race pace rankings behind Ferrari. Verstappen managed just a handful of laps in FP1, spending most of the session in the garage as they looked to cure an overheating gearbox. And the hottest conditions of the year helped ease their pain getting the tyres up to temperature for a single lap.

Sebastian Vettel says his brief appearance wearing his underpants outside his race overalls at the Formula 1 Miami GP was a “piss-take.”

F1 Miami GP: Perez leads Leclerc and Verstappen in final practice (autosport.com)

Sergio Perez headed final practice for Formula 1's first Miami Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, while Esteban Ocon crashed ...

As Verstappen was returning to the pits, Leclerc was beating Perez’s sector one time by 0.4s, but he lost all his advantage by the finish line to wind up 0.194s adrift, even as his late improvement meant he moved ahead of Verstappen in the final standings. But he did not stay top of long, as Verstappen’s purple sector one and personal best in the middle sector was enough to get him ahead of his team-mate with a 1m30.649s, even though he was slower than his own best final third on the mediums. That had Verstappen top by 0.050s over Perez, with Leclerc 0.332s behind in third, but after a trip through the pits Perez responded with purple sectors in the first and final thirds to move back ahead on a 1m30.304s just as the final five minutes arrived. After a slow cooldown lap nearly a minute off the pace, Leclerc went for another flier – setting a purple sector one before losing time in the middle segment and then clawing time back in the final third, but not enough to improve the top time as he ended up 0.053s slower than his personal best. He then pitted and the attention switched back to Red Bull, with Sergio Perez, who had also been doing high-fuel running during the early stages and so languishing in 18th, shooting ahead of Leclerc with a 1m30.699s as the session’s final 10 minutes began. The session started with track temperatures nearly hitting 50°C, a point which was reached and surpassed by FP3’s halfway point, and Verstappen led the field out of the pits – an atypical run plan for Red Bull in final practice, as the team usually leaves the garage late in FP3 to focus solely on qualifying preparation runs.

And likely the teams have done all sorts of simulations to figure out tire wear, etc., using a variety of different scenarios. But Daniel Ricciardo's disaster of a race that resulted in an 18th-place finish gives one pause. As for familiarity, drivers have been able to drive the computer simulation of the track to be more familiar with it when they finally get the chance really go at it, so that's a help. The track layout was chosen from 75 proposed (36 of which were then computer simulated) and it looks like it should provide for a fast, entertaining race with an average speed just under 140 mph. Sand has been brought in to replicate a beach, and boats are "moored" on trailers around a section of the track.

Sergio Perez put Red Bull top of the charts in final practice for the Miami Grand Prix, with championship leader Charles Leclerc slotting into second.

Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu was 18th, ahead of Nicholas Latifi, with Ocon propping up the classification having failed to set a lap time. Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel was one of a flurry of drivers to set their best lap in the closing stages as the track rubbered in. He did well to keep the car out of the barriers and end up third overall – Leclerc splitting the Red Bulls. But it wasn’t so good for Alpine team mate Esteban Ocon, who crashed at Turn 14, bringing out the red flag. Carlos Sainz clocked up the mileage, having lost a bunch of time in FP2 after he crashed at the chicane, and was seventh quickest, half a tenth of a second ahead of Kevin Magnussen. The Mexican clocked a 1m 30.304s on the soft tyres at the Miami International Autodrome, with his team mate Max Verstappen set to go quickest only to lock up on the run up to the chicane.

Zak Brown Already Celebrating Success of F1 Miami Grand Prix (Autoweek)

The Californian has been trying to get more races in the U.S. for some time.

And they're trying to build their business, our business, and the fact that they're making investments to build Formula 1, I think you can only applaud them for that. The revenues are growing, the race markets are growing, so they're putting their money where their mouth is, and I think it's great. The key will be to make Miami not only a success this weekend, but also to keep it an ongoing success that will continue to grow with each passing year, particularly with all the buzz and anticipation Las Vegas is already producing nearly 18 months ahead of time. “If you look at the grand prix calendar, the Italy’s of the world, they've been popular for decades and decades. “Putting on a good first year event, which is a challenge to get everything right, given the size and scale and newness to it,” Brown said will be the key benchmark once it comes to evaluating Miami’s first-year success. “The demand from sponsors and fans has been off the charts, unlike anything I've seen since my time in Formula 1.

George Russell previously highlighted that Imola was “the first weekend where I’ve been truly struggling with my back and, like, chest pains from the severity of the bouncing. With over 20 laps to go, the AlphaTauri star had contact with Fernando Alonso and was running slower. Typically the cause is related to the cars’ aerodynamics. Leclerc came closest to making a pass with a look to the inside of Turn 11 at the end of the long, curving run from the ‘marina’, but was pinched on the inside line and lost ground – never getting alongside the leader. Leclerc was able to set competitive times at this stage, but could not do so consistently and with Verstappen able to cover him off each time anyway, so Ferrari called him in to switch to the hards at the end of lap 24 – just after he had reported his car was “so difficult to drive”. But a serene had no chance to play out after the safety car was called out on lap 41 after Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris collided – putting the McLaren driver out just past the start of the long, meandering acceleration zone that follows the fake marina at Turn 8. The Red Bull was steadily able to build a lead, aided by Leclerc locking up and sliding deep at Turn 17 on lap 12, which cost him a second and meant at the end of that tour Verstappen’s lead had reached 2.6s. At the end of lap eight, Leclerc slid exiting the Turn 17 hairpin and Verstappen arrived right on his gearbox – moving alongside as they ran down the pit straight and then taking the lead with a simple pass into Turn 1, Leclerc opting not to fight too hard. Leclerc had a 0.8s lead at the end of the first lap of 57 and quickly moved to pull clear of Verstappen’s DRS range by the time it was activated on the third lap.

F1 Miami Grand Prix Proved to Be More Monaco, Less Misery (Autoweek)

Organizers Tom Garfinkel and Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross produced a gorgeous facility, far above our expectations.

- Lando Norris, McLaren, +18 laps - Pierre Gasly, AlphaTauri, +12 laps Bottom line: The Miami Grand Prix led off with a swagger, an assuredness far beyond what its rookie status should have. After his brief run of bad luck, Verstappen was a man on a mission, and anyone who bets against a pissed-off Verstappen does so at their own peril. The race itself was surprisingly lackluster, a largely follow-the-leader affair after Red Bull's Max Verstappen squeezed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in the first few laps. Traffic was miserable leaving the race, but compared to, say, Circuit of the Americas, it was a mere inconvenience.
