AC Milan have reportedly struck a deal with Renato Sanches to sign the Portuguese international this summer, with Arsenal also chasing the midfielder.

However, with Milan now storming ahead in the race to sign Sanches, Arsenal have seemingly missed their chance to sign the Lille star, with the Gunners having to turn to the drawing board yet again for a new midfield target. The 24-year-old has been on the radar for the European titans for some time, with Arsenal also in the race for Sanches, with Sport Mediaset reporting that the Gunners view the Ligue 1 star as a replacement for Granit Xhaka. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has been discussing Emile Smith Rowe and his recent fall down the pecking order at Arsenal.

After all, too much pressure on his young shoulders could halt his development. Ferdinand was picking his Young Player of the Year for the Premier League, and he says that Smith Rowe can count himself a little unlucky to not be up for this award due to the fact he’s not been playing so much football as of late. The midfielder was a key player for the Gunners at the beginning of the season, but the emergence of Gabriel Martinelli has seen Smith Rowe drop into a more rotational role.

West Ham vs Arsenal, live! Score, updates, how to watch, stream (NBC Sports)

West Ham vs Arsenal is a London derby with plenty on the line for the Gunners on Sunday, as they need to keep the pressure on Tottenham.

Mikel Arteta’s side will likely have to beat West Ham and Leeds before that to make sure of an advantage over Spurs heading into the NLD and their young attacking talents have done the business in recent weeks. All is not lost but they have clearly prioritized the Europa League in recent weeks, hence their run of one win in their last five Premier League games. Arsenal have won their last two games to push themselves into fourth place and they have the edge over north London rivals Tottenham heading into the huge NLD derby on May 12.

Takehiro Tomiyasu returns to the lineup for the Gunners. The Hammers trail Manchester United by three points, with a game in hand, for 6th place. Lacazette missed the ensuing penalty, however. It was a controversial penalty and yellow card award, probably a foul, definitely not the type of call you could overturn on VAR once it had been made. It’s relatively simple for the Gunners — win out, finish in a Champions League place. Arsenal travel across London to face West Ham today in a tough test with implications for the European places.

Arsenal happy to win ugly but they must stop teams targeting Tavares (The Guardian)

Mikel Arteta's side were far from their best at West Ham but they showed signs of growing up at the London Stadium.

All the same Arsenal still found a way here, taking advantage of West Ham’s lack of height through set-piece goals from Holding and Gabriel Magalhães. And to give him his due Tavares was still surging at the end, winning a crucial header in his area before starting a counterattack. He was hooked during the first half against Nottingham Forest in January, substituted early against Crystal Palace last month and was very fortunate only to give away one penalty against Manchester United last weekend, while against West Ham he spent large portions of the game simply knocking easy passes straight out of play, needlessly putting his team under pressure. Is he soon to be found hiding in a laundry basket on a big Champions League night at the Emirates? There is certainly something about Arsenal that rubs opponents up the wrong way. With Kieran Tierney out for the season, Tavares is a worry for Arteta. When Tottenham watch this game they will know where to attack Arsenal in next week’s pivotal north London derby. West Ham were repeatedly finding space down that flank, repeatedly running through the same passing sequences to send Vladimir Coufal away, and it was not much of a surprise that Tavares was caught out eventually, the Portuguese’s positioning all over the place when Jarrod Bowen cancelled out Arsenal’s lead on the stroke of half-time. Midway through the first half of an utterly forgettable London derby, Nuno Tavares picked up the ball near the halfway line and set off on an adventure.

Arsenal's Champions League return is within their grasp after big ... (ESPN)

Having a season without European football has been impactful for Arsenal, and that freshness has them on the inside track for a top-four finish.

They will need a bigger, better squad to compete on two fronts, but this one is suddenly ticking along in the Premier League promisingly once again. While you've got a young team and you're trying to get a good enough squad together ... even last year, Arsenal were in the semifinal of the Europe League last year, we're in it this year, and it became quite a difficult season for them because of that. Takehiro Tomiyasu returned to the line-up only to later hobble off injured, while Nuno Tavares had one of those all-action afternoons in which he looks simultaneously a threat and a liability in almost every passage of play. With their next attack, Saka forced Fabianski to turn a low shot behind at his near post and from the resulting corner, Gabriel eventually scored. They have won just four of their past 14 games in all competitions as exertions at home and abroad begin to catch up with them. LONDON -- It has long felt as though Arsenal's absence from Europe this season would provide them a telling advantage at some stage, and Sunday's 2-1 win at West Ham was it.

Arsenal leapfrog Tottenham into top four after gritty win at West Ham (CBSSports.com)

Goals from Gabriel and Rob Holding earned Arsenal a 2-1 win at the London Stadium.

Not only did this undersized West Ham team allow their visitors to score twice from dead balls, they never quite turned their own corners and free kicks into the heart in mouth moments they often become for opponents. That should have been it for Arsenal. West Ham had more pressing matters on the horizon and with seven minutes left to go in the first half it seemed that all Arteta's side needed to do was hold firm and wait until David Moyes' withdrew the big guns. Michail Antonio and Tomas Soucek entered the fray late on, Bowen and Rice completed 90 minutes ahead of the biggest games of their West Ham careers. Michail Antonio and Tomas Soucek were rested, but Jarrod Bowen and Declan Rice were retained from the side that lost 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt. The latter did as fine a job as anyone has of late in quelling Martin Odegaard. Arteta will surely not forget those nervy moments in the rush of euphoria that came with the final whistle. "The way they fought, the way they understood how they have to manage the game in certain moments, the way we defended because we didn't concede anything: it was phenomenal. We had a lot of possession, we restricted Arsenal to fewer opportunities. Nor should it go unnoticed that, Saka aside, they looked devoid of ideas from open play when the score was 1-1. Too often he was chasing long passes into the channels that were just what the home defense wanted to face. Those are the only points that count at this stage of the season. So whilst this version of Arsenal may be built on the most temporary of foundations -- two of their best performers in Mohamed Elneny and Eddie Nketiah are out of contract at the end of the season -- it is effective enough. With four games to go, none of which look like they will be easily negotiated, Mikel Arteta's side sit two points clear of Tottenham in fourth.

Arteta on the win, Gabriel and injuries | Press conference | News (Arsenal.com)

Mikel Arteta was a happy man after our battling victory over West Ham at the London Stadium. Goals from our two centre backs gave us a third vital win in a row, ...

Well, mathematically everything is open so, we’re going to have to go to Leeds and win again because everybody is going to put pressure because everybody wants to play in the position that we are right now. I think I would be wasting my time because you know the players, the staff, everybody is with their phones and they all know. Those performances have been really consistent throughout the season, defending and now scoring really important goals for us, which is an add on that you hope to have in your centre defenders but it’s easy to find. Tomiyasu is just that he had been out for so long and could not continue. It’s a massive win, under very difficult circumstances because we put ourselves in real problems, especially with our decision making and in ball possessions, and the spaces we were attacking, and the timing of it and the efficiency of it. The way they fought, the way they understood how they have to manage the game in certain moments, with the way we defended, because we didn't concede anything, it was phenomenal.

And the lads have a chance to make it even better and give us more to celebrate with the remaining four matches. They’ve managed it with matches to spare and while fielding the youngest average starting lineup in the Premier League. They are eight points better this season over the corresponding matches from last year and have already bettered the points haul. Arsenal still have plenty to play for this season. You could look at the remaining matches and give multiple reasons why each team will or will not be motivated to put in a good performance, regardless of whether they appear to have something to play for or not. Arsenal have their sights set on a 4th place finish and a return to the Champions League. The task is straightforward - win out, qualify for the CL. Or win three and draw Spurs, qualify for the Champions League. Arsenal are two points ahead of Tottenham with the same number of remaining games and a North London Derby on May 12th. Tottenham have a significantly better goal difference (7) than Arsenal, so unless the final four matches somehow erase that, if the two sides finish tied on points, Spurs finish higher.

Arsenal have arguably seen the best of their defence when they have a lead to protect.
