Why record eight NFL teams without No. 1 picks aren't worried (Los Angeles Times)

A quarter of the NFL teams don't have a draft pick in first round, but that doesn't worry the champion Rams or the other seven teams with alternate plans.

When was the last time they didn’t have a first-round pick? Why no first-round pick? Their first pick this year? Why no first-round pick? When was the last time they didn’t have a first-round pick? When was the last time they didn’t have a first-round pick? Why no first-round pick? Why no first-round pick? When was the last time they didn’t have a first-rounder? In 2012, their first pick was the 95th overall selection, guard Tony Bergstrom. Two years ago, the Colts traded their first-round pick to San Francisco for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. No picks in the first, but are the Bears happy to have two in the second and one in the third?

2022 NBA mock draft: Who teams would pick based on latest NBA lottery projections (ESPN)

Montero is one of the most skilled guards in the draft with deep range on his pull-up 3, impressive pace in pick-and-roll and the ability to pass off the dribble with either hand. The Grizzlies have proved to be one of the shrewdest teams in the NBA the past few years in terms of using their draft capital. He doesn't quite have one elite NBA skill to hang his hat on and his shooting confidence ebbs and flows, but Braun is a national champion with winning pedigree and the type of role-player whom potential title contenders like the Warriors covet. Keels is one of the youngest prospects in the draft and brings the type of toughness, feel for the game and winning spirit the organization covets. Although he wasn't overly efficient and still has room to grow as a decision-maker or defender, Hardy made a lot of NBA-style shots with the G League Ignite, and in time he could serve as a secondary ball handler alongside Luka Doncic. There are players on the board more ready to contribute than Hardy, but this is a talent swing on a prolific scorer who entered the season as a projected top-five pick and continued to show strides as a playmaker as the G League season progressed. Kessler was the best defender in college basketball this season, a force as a rim-protector who also brings upside as a pick-and-roll finisher and even as a perimeter shooter. Enter Jovic, who has excellent size at 6-10, a strong feel for the game and could slide nicely in between Jalen McDaniels and Jarred Vanderbilt while not detracting from the Timberwolves' core of Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns. -- Givony Adding another steady-handed guard in the backcourt in Washington who can play with or without the ball, excels in pick-and-roll and is a strong perimeter shooter makes some sense here, especially since he has the size and length to play in many different lineup configurations. With Ingram, McCollum and potentially Williamson as the primary shot creators, adding another off-ball threat who doesn't need offensive volume to add value makes sense for the surging Pelicans. -- Schmitz Murray doesn't need plays called for him to be effective and looks like a strong fit alongside backcourt starters Tyrese Haliburton and Malcolm Brogdon. His perimeter shooting and defensive versatility could even allow him to see some time at small forward in supersized lineups alongside the likes of Myles Turner and Isaiah Jackson. Indiana may be disappointed not to move into the top-4 on the night of the lottery in this scenario, but Murray should quell that quickly with a Rookie of the Year-caliber campaign. Smith's incredibly high floor combined with his age, trajectory at just 18 years old and ability to shoot over the top of virtually any defender from all over the floor makes him as strong a candidate as any to hear his name called first overall. 2022 NFL Two-Round Mock Draft: No QBs in top 15, four go in ... (CBSSports.com)

CBS Sports' Pete Prisco has been doing this for years -- a mock draft on what he thinks teams should do. It's a great idea because it gets you on the record, ...

Olave is probably the best route runner in this class but he alone won't be able to account for all of Tyreek Hill's offense. We don't get the concerns about Dean's size -- he's 5-foot-11, 229 pounds -- and we love everything about his game. This has been a popular pick for us over the months because of Hill's versatility. Tyler Biadasz was good at times last season but there's certainly room for upgrading the interior OL. That brings us to Zion Johnson, who is another player who went to the Senior Bowl and proved he was worthy of first-round consideration. Wyatt is another player who changed some minds with his Senior Bowl week and he continued to convince folks of his first-round talents by putting on a show at the combine. The Steelers could go defensive line or wide receiver here but instead take a center, one of their weakest positions a season ago. The Chargers could go either tackle or guard here -- they have needs at both positions -- but with four tackles already off the board, Green makes sense here. The biggest question is if he can keep his weight down, which directly correlates to his stamina, and his ability to stay on the field. No offensive line help, but New York can address that in Round 2. Two CBs are already off the board, but McDuffie is worthy of a top-12 selection. Thibodeaux has game-changing talents and, frankly, he's been all over the board in our mock drafts, mostly because teams have differing opinions on him. Hutchinson starred at Michigan and now he moves a few miles down the road to join the Lions. He's the best player in this class and talk that he has already reached his ceiling is just that.

2022 NFL Draft Preview: Needs and Rumors for Every Team ... (Sports Illustrated)

Jacksonville owner Shad Khan finally has the transparency he's wanted throughout his organization. Plus, a team-by-team primer, the curious case of Kyle ...

With Travon, it’s going to come down to how you use him, and how confident you are in your coaching and your scheme, and how confident you are in the person to max out his potential. One told me that teams close to the bottom of the round have asked more about their interest in moving up from the top of the second round into the bottom of the first than they have about moving up within the first round. I’d encourage you to check that out for more on the spot the 49ers find themselves in (and add that geography might be a part of Samuel’s desire to change teams, as well). Which is just one reason why both he and receivers coach Mike Groh are optimistic they can get the most out of a player who, kind of like Deebo Samuel, you have to have a plan for, but is very dynamic in his own way. Getting younger and deeper at receiver and on the defensive front would seem to be a nice place for Berry & Co. to do work with what they have this year. … That is really a key thing to being in the weeds more and getting a lot more homework done. What you need to know: Two things to keep an eye on here are the future of the offensive line and speed on defense. What you need to know: Consensus for three months has been that if Hutchinson doesn’t go to Jacksonville, the Lions will keep him home—and that makes a ton of sense. And frankly some of the assistant coaches, they have a viewpoint, maybe more technical on how all of them would fit in with the team and how the team might be impacted or who moves the needle the most. As in the weekend was fun for him over in England—with his Fulham soccer team earning a promotion to the Premier League, and he and son Tony over there together for the first time since COVID-19 hit in March 2020. But there are parallels that stretch from what he believes works in one to the other, and a big one is something very fundamental and relatable. “The most important thing for me is really to be able to walk in and talk to the people just casually and really have a healthy, fun dialogue without tension or any pretense about it,” Khan said.

Matching All 32 NFL Teams with Alabama Draft Prospects (CalBearsMaven)

A look at the top Crimson Tide targets for each NFL franchise ahead of this week's draft.

Alabama fit — If not for his ACL injury in January, Jameson Williams might have been a top-10 pick. Alabama fit — Seattle could use some help at the edge rusher position which could make Christopher Allen a possibility at No. 109 overall. Alabama fit — Phidarian Mathis matches what Pittsburgh likes in a defensive lineman and could end up with the Steelers at No. 52 overall. Alabama fit — It’s hard to match the Dolphins up with Alabama players considering they only have four picks and don’t make a selection until No. 102 overall. While Jalyn Armour-Davis figures to be off the board by pick No. 104, Josh Jobe could be a possibility later in the draft. Alabama fit — The Chargers are limited at the linebacker position. Alabama fit — Kansas City lost its top cornerback in Charvarius Ward this offseason. Alabama fit — While Jacksonville appears set to take former Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson with the first pick, Evan Neal makes a lot of sense at that spot as well. Alabama fit — Indianapolis needs to add more depth at the cornerback position. While most predict the Lions to address their pass rush with the No. 2 overall pick, they’ll need more help than that. Alabama fit — If Baltimore doesn’t select a cornerback at No. 14 overall, Jayln Armour-Davis could be a real possibility in either the second or third round. Alabama fit — Atlanta loves taking Alabama receivers, and with Calvin Ridley’s future uncertain, the Falcons could draft another Crimson Tide wideout this year.

NFL Draft 2022 Rumors: Multiple Teams in Top Half Are Trying to ... (Bleacher Report)

Several NFL teams are reportedly looking to trade back in the first round of the 2022.

Teams generally use the same trade charts to value draft picks; this supply-and-demand issue could allow an eager team to get a higher pick for 80 or 90 percent of the typical cost. Liberty's Malik Willis, Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett and Ole Miss' Matt Corral are considered the top three quarterbacks in this class, but none are can't-miss prospects. Several NFL teams are reportedly looking to trade back in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft.

Is the “F Them Picks” Model Changing How Teams Value First ... (The Ringer)

For decades, the NFL draft was seen as the epicenter of team-building. This offseason, though, many teams mortgaged their picks in trades for veterans.

And the Falcons took a $41 million dead-money hit to trade Ryan to Indy in March, which means Ryan’s cap hit for the Falcons this year will be larger than any player in the NFL … despite the fact that Ryan is no longer on the team. And that, combined with a salary cap that has risen more than 60 percent over the past decade, has led to more buyers and sellers, and bigger and better trades. And the Bucs mounted a 24-point comeback in the second half of the divisional round. Plus, teams have become more willing to eat dead cap costs—a cap hit a team takes when it trades or cuts a player in the middle of their contract—in order to move veterans in the middle of their deals and start fresh. This year in particular, many great players have become available—or demanded to become available—for a variety of reasons. A quarter of the league’s teams don’t have a first-rounder in 2022, while another quarter has two. Just one in three first-round picks gets signed to a second contract by the team that drafted them, according to a study published by the 33rd Team. And while there are 32 first-round picks every season, that doesn’t mean every class has 32 players worthy of a first-round selection. A record eight teams have traded their first-round picks, many for current stars, and some around the league view this as the start of a shift. The NFL has so thoroughly sold the importance of the first round that the league sliced it off from the rest of the draft and dedicated an entire night to it. In the NFL, a league that worships at the altar of building teams through the draft, Snead could have been branded a heretic. Last year, Rams fans took a popular meme of Michael Jordan and remixed it for their GM, who has traded away seven first-round picks over the last five years. Snead’s kids thought the meme was so funny they put it on a mug and gifted it to their dad.

2022 NFL Draft needs for all 32 teams: From the Arizona Cardinals ... (Sky Sports)

Who will the Jacksonville Jaguars take with the No 1 overall pick? Can the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers find ...

At No 8 in the first round they should have their pick of the top three play-callers, but is that too early to take a QB and could the suspension of Calvin Ridley yet tempt them to snag a Garrett Wilson or a Jameson Williams to address their worryingly-shallow receiver corps first. Chase Young will be back to lead a strong defensive line, but Washington could take it to the next level by adding a big-time linebacker and some defensive back talent. Kenny Pickett is expected to be in play at No 6 should Carolina choose to go down that route, and at this stage Matt Rhule may not have the time for a 'kick the can down the road' approach. It is a good job the Eagles have as many picks as they do - including two first-round picks and five picks inside the top 101. With picks No 16 and No 19, they have the chance to achieve both in round one. It has to be receiver, and the No 22 pick puts them in a prime position to make that happen. The best teams build from the line out, so if Houston want to convince the masses that they're not the dysfunctional disaster of the last two years or so, it should be a pass rusher and offensive line protection that will be the targets with those two first-round selections. Picking at No 2 in the draft, they will have their shot at one of Aidan Hutchinson, Travon Walker and Kayvon Thibodeaux to provide the instant contribution off the edge desired by head coach Dan Campbell. Defensive back is also an area in need of addressing, particularly at safety where a versatile option like Daxton Hill could make for a nice option. It is far from a lock that Jacksonville will take Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson at No 1 overall in the 2022 Draft, but that is the pick many are anticipating. The Texans have holes to plug at pretty much every position on their roster, and they'll get a chance to solve two big needs early on with the No 3 and No 13 picks in this draft. Amari Cooper's arrival from Dallas is a star, but with both Odell Beckham Jr and Jarvis Landry gone from the group that started last year, expect wide receiver to be addressed in the draft. Help has arrived already in the offseason arrivals of La'el Collins from Dallas, Alex Cappa from Tampa Bay and Ted Karras from New England, but getting some young talent to add to the O-line from the draft can only help that unit gel and ensure Burrow is protected beyond even this year.

NFL draft preview: As teams trade picks for proven players, Steelers ... (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Blame the Los Angeles Rams. They haven't had a first-round selection since Sean McVay became head coach in 2017 because they value proven stars more than ...

You've got to know where you are in the process, and you've got to be smart about that. The Rams haven’t had a first-round pick since 2016 (Jared Goff), when Jeff Fisher was the coach, and they don’t have another until 2024. “If I can take what I hope is going to be a late-first-round pick and acquire a sure thing that I've seen apples to apples, I've seen him play well at this level against this competition, I know exactly what I'm buying, I think that's smart,” said NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah. “The problem is, you've just got to be careful that you don't miscalculate and you end up trading what could be the next franchise-changing player, which is a top-five pick or a top-10 pick, and you have a team that's not necessarily ready to win right now. So, not only have eight No. 1 picks from this year’s draft already been traded away (and maybe more to come by Thursday), five first-round selections and four Day 2 picks from the 2023 draft have already been swapped. We want to be a part of their growth and development as young people, not only as players. In the past eight years, the percentage of teams who have had a No. 1 pick has slowly declined. The previous time was 1967, when they shipped their ninth overall pick to the Green Bay Packers for defensive lineman Lloyd Voss and tight end Tony Jeter. “We’re open to learning and growing, don’t misunderstand me there, but in terms of how we acquire talent — our approach to acquiring talent — we have a definitive model,” Tomlin said. The only time the Steelers departed from their philosophy came in 2019, when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sustained a season-ending injury in Week 2. And that’s just a philosophical approach that we believe in. Since then, teams have fallen in line like the Rockettes, validating the belief the NFL is indeed a copycat league, no matter if it’s offensive strategy, defensive alignments or draft philosophy. They haven’t had a first-round selection since Sean McVay became head coach in 2017 because they value proven stars more than untested rookies.

They could go quarterback here, but I think they can pass until pick No. 34. They pass on a receiver here to take a player who would have gone in the top 15 if not for his tearing an Achilles' tendon at his pro day. Jones is 32 and just signed a two-year deal. They have issues at guard in a big way and he can also move over to center when Ben Jones is done. They need a player who can play opposite Tre'Davious White, who, by the way, is coming off a torn Achilles' tendon. Hamilton is a big, long player who can help in the dime as well playing near the line of scrimmage. They need a quarterback who they can develop for the long run. With Michael Thomas, they would have a nice combo in the speed of Olave with the physical style of Thomas. They have young receivers on the roster, so they can take this chance. They have two good players inside in Dalvin Tomlinson and Harrison Phillips, but Davis can be a force. I would pass on a quarterback here to take one in the second round or acquire Baker Mayfield. They are rumored to love him, and again taking big people who can play is never a bad thing.

Some companies require teams of employees to come to the office on the same days of the week. To Mehrotra, this means companies should prioritize a structure that supports synchronous and asynchronous work. Organizations need to consider that not all employees may be present in the same time zones or have similar working conditions. The majority see the office as vital in fostering company culture, employee collaboration and hosting client meetings. As companies explore hybrid work, there’s a growing need for a better defined structure for managing on-site and remote work. Still others are choosing to leave the decision to their employees.

Atlanta’s either going to be a very good and fairly young football team when the 2023 season kicks off and they’ve splurged in free agency, or a very young and cheap football team that has the flexibility to go in a number of different directions if they decide they aren’t ready to contend. The Falcons are likely to stumble a bit this upcoming season, but the hope is that all those shed contracts and outgoing veterans combined with a killer 2022 draft class will make this team young and great before long. After cutdowns in 2020, the roster stood at an average of 26.9 years old, or the oldest roster in the NFL, and last year it was 25.9 years after cutdown, or 20th. Right now the avg age is 25.8 and that is only going to get younger after the draft. There is nothing inherently wrong with having an older football team, but you don’t want to be old, cap-strapped, and not that good, a position the Falcons found themselves in for years. In an effort to re-capture the magic of the 2016 season, the Falcons doubled down on their own veterans, leaned on free agency as much as their limited dollars would allow, and unfortunately fell well short of being a contender every year except 2017.

NFL Draft Day Predictor 2022 - When could the QBs be drafted ... (ESPN)

The pick where Ridder is 50-50 to still be available is No. 36. In fact, the real question might be whether the Cincinnati cornerback makes it to the Jets at No. 4? The Draft Day Predictor is all-in on Georgia's Travon Walker as a top-three selection. But if either team is willing to make a move up to No. 10 in a deal with the New York Jets, there's a 53% chance Willis makes it there. No. I said the Draft Day Predictor doesn't work in absolutes, and that's true. And such a move would put the Packers/Chiefs ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles and Saints at Nos. 15 and 16, respectively, where Williams' highest probabilities to be selected fall. Not trading up gives the Steelers a 26% chance to land Pickett if they desire, per the Draft Day Predictor. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs' best hope of the five pass-catchers is Burks, and there's only an 18% shot he slides to them at No. 29. So it's a question of whether Pittsburgh is feeling lucky and how much it is willing to pay for the assurance of getting one of those two QBs. For the first time, the Draft Day Predictor is a publicly available tool. But for now, let's break down some of the storylines of the 2022 draft, with the Draft Day Predictor serving as our crystal ball. Nonetheless, it should bring noticeable improvements to performance on Apple Silicon machines. Up until this week, Microsoft Teams for macOS would run as an Intel application on Apple Silicon Macs, using Apple’s Rosetta 2 translation technology. When you download and install the app, you can see that Teams is now a “Universal” app.

NBA Draft 2022 Mock 2.0: First-round predictions for all teams (8 Points, 9 Seconds)

With the 2022 NBA Draft just a couple of months away, here is our second edition of the mock draft where we project all first-round picks for every team.

Fortunately for them, Cade Cunningham needs another running mate in the backcourt, and Shaedon Sharpe has all the tools to be his ideal complement, if not co-star. I have already mentioned before why Jabari Smith should be the Pacers’ primary draft target, and this still holds true. The 2022 NBA Draft is only a couple of months away.

Microsoft Teams users with Apple M1-powered MacBooks can finally take full advantage of Apple Silicon.

The fact that it took 18 months for this to be addressed is a little shocking, but Microsoft was busy releasing Windows 11, among other things. Not having an optimized Apple Silicon version of Teams has been a point of frustration for many Teams users who had filed numerous complaints on Microsoft's feedback portal. All snark aside, the newly optimized for Apple silicon Teams is not actually publicly available just yet to Teams users.

2022 NFL Draft: Top 10 teams with the most draft capital (FOXSports.com)

The Rams and Dolphins might be perfectly content with what their draft picks netted. However, the point of this article is to spotlight the "big fish" of the ...

Given that many think this year’s deep draft class is set up for clubs to win on Day 3, the Ravens have a lot of flexibility in the opening frame Saturday morning. General manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll certainly have their work cut out for them in replacing Wilson, but the club has the draft commodities to do so, with three of the first 41 picks and five among the top 109. There is no denying that it will be difficult to replace Davante Adams, but with the 2022 draft loaded at receiver, general manager Brian Gutekunst is in position to do so. The haul gives Green Bay five selections among the top 92 and 11 picks total. To put that in perspective, the Rams, Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders will not have made any picks thought that point. Despite trading away two first-round picks to the New Orleans Saints, the Eagles remain one of the power players in this class. Six of the Texans' 11 current draft picks were acquired via trade, including the 13th and 107th overall selections from Cleveland as part of the Deshaun Watson deal. GM Joe Schoen's remaining four selections are well-distributed in the fourth (112), fifth (147, 173) and sixth rounds (182). Not having a selection in the seventh round can actually be a tactical advantage, as the club’s scouts can use that time to contact potential UDFAs to set up deals following the draft. With all due respect to the Jaguars and the No. 1 overall pick, no club is better positioned to take advantage of this year’s top-end talent than the Jets, who have a league-high five choices among the top 70 selections. Only the Jets and Houston Texans top the Giants’ five picks within the top 81. At least mathematically, the Jaguars are the runaway winners when it comes to draft capital, in large part because the No. 1 overall selection is worth a staggering 1,000 points in Hill’s chart. The Rams and Dolphins might be perfectly content with what their draft picks netted.

3 Teams Which Could Trade for Lions' No. 32 Pick (Sports Illustrated)

New York Jets Seattle Seahawks and Houston Texans are three teams which could trade for Detroit Lions No. 32 overall pick in 2022 NFL Draft.

Is there a team that is sitting right at the top of the second round or the middle of the second round that wants to trade up in front of us to pick a quarterback? They pick back-to-back at No. 40 and No. 41 overall, which should be enough to get Detroit's front office to cough up the No. 32 pick. He threw for just nine touchdowns, to go along with 11 interceptions, in 13 games during his rookie season. “Yeah, if you pick a quarterback there at 32 obviously, yeah, you do have that fifth-year option. Remember, Detroit also possesses the No. 32 overall selection at the end of the first round, which contains immense value, as well. Cincinnati's Desmond Ridder, Ole Miss' Matt Corral, North Carolina's Sam Howell and Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett have all been recently mocked to Detroit at No. 32 overall.

Agent's Take: 2022 NFL Draft-week trades involving veteran players ... (CBSSports.com)

NFL teams should seriously consider these trades in the days leading up to or during the draft.

2022 being Bradberry's contract year could also be problematic for the Giants getting more than Day 3 draft pick (fourth round to seventh round pick) in return. A similar percentage with Mayfield would have the Browns eating $11.858 million of Mayfield's salary to get him out the door where the Seahawks are responsible for $7 million. The Seahawks have a glaring need at quarterback after dealing Russell Wilson and a 2022 fourth round pick to the Broncos for multiple players (tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris and quarterback Drew Lock), 2022 and 2023 first round picks, 2022 and 2023 second round picks and a 2022 fifth round pick. Mayfield played the best football of his NFL career during the second half of the 2020 season to help the Browns earn a playoff berth for the first time since 2002. The Browns are going to have to eat a significant portion of the $18.858 million to deal Mayfield. In order to facilitate a trade of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the Broncos after acquiring Darnold, the Panthers paid $7,062,500 of his $11.5 million 2021 compensation in a signing bonus prior to completing the move. The trade compensation for Mayfield really should be similar to Carolina's deal to acquire 2018 third overall pick Sam Darnold prior to the 2021 draft. The two big wide receiver trades this year could also be used as guide in acquiring Samuel. The Raiders sent the Packers 2022 first and second round picks (22nd and 53rd overall) for Davante Adams, who was designated as a franchise player. Why Trade Won't Happen: The 49ers' refuse to part with a game-changing offensive playmaker although Samuel wants out. The latest two data points in wide receiver market are Hill's deal with the Dolphins and Diggs' extension with the Bills. Hill was given a four-year, $120 million extension with $72.2 million in guarantees by Miami. $52.535 million was fully guaranteed at signing. Hill was dealt to the Dolphins for five draft picks: 2022 first, second and fourth round picks (29th, 50th and 121st overall) as well as 2023 fourth and sixth round picks. The Jets have been pursuing a number one wide receiver in the trade market. Most trades leading up to or during the NFL draft, which this year is April 28-30, are for current or future draft choices instead of veteran players.

However, nothing can ever be ruled out when it comes to the team’s willingness to capitalize on a depressed market. If a high-upside talent such as Georgia defensive tackle Jordan Davis or Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams falls into New England’s range, climbing up the board at a comparatively reduced cost might make sense even with the general depth of the draft class lying elsewhere. “We’re always looking for value, no matter where it is,” director of player personnel Matt Groh recently said. They are trying to maximize value, no matter where they find it. The 2022 NFL Draft is not particularly top-heavy. Of course, trading down works in theory.

5 teams that should trade up in the 2022 NFL Draft (FanSided)

With the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Thursday night, it would not be shocking to see any of these five teams trade up from where they are picking.

This pick Kansas City received from Miami comes by way of the San Francisco 49ers, so it is not as good as the one where the Dolphins were supposed to be picking. For the money, some teams may like second-round picks more than those in the first, but with former day-two selections wanting new contracts stat, perhaps moving up to take a guy on Thursday night is not the worst idea to be had? With that power comes great responsibility, as well as potentially five years of control on a manageable salary.

Talladega finish highlights growth of newer teams in Cup (NASCAR on NBC Sports)

TALLADEGA, Ala. — A new team nearly won Sunday's Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway. Instead, it was a team in its second season that triumphed.

“I knew I had to race (McDowell) for the free pass, Brad was in the pack, at the tail,” Chastain said. I knew to get the first free pass at stage one end, I had to disrupt the field. I offset to the right of Michael, so he was on the bottom, and I went to the right. He also said that the infield RV lots, numbering about 2,700, all were sold out for the event. In that situation I felt the risk of what I was doing was enough to get the free pass at the stage break, to get around (McDowell) and stay ahead of Brad. Turns out it probably wasn’t enough. “I knew that that put everybody either going two-by-two above me, which I would probably have to give it to them. The low line had to go above McDowell to pass and then under Chastain to clear him. “There’s going to be times when — and it can happen at any point — other teams are strong, other (manufacturers) are strong,” he said. When I saw (leader Kyle Larson) split to the bottom, I disrupted the field. In eight of the first 10 Cup races this season, there has been at least one newer team in the top five. While McDowell stayed low on the track, Chastain went to the middle, forcing the field to split him. While it’s easy to say that superspeedway racing offers such opportunities, this was not a new occurrence this year.
