Nepal's democracy on a slippery slope: Kathmandu Post (The Straits Times)

The paper says there is an urgent need to redefine internal politics in Nepal, especially the current form of alliance politics.

The political parties are bent on winning the elections for winning rather than for the higher purpose of serving the public. The same tool allowed political parties to control local resources set aside for development purposes. Political parties that claim to support and strengthen democratic values themselves lack the ethical discipline to ensure that shortcomings and malpractices are rooted out from local governance.

But in essence, what it lacks is the spirit in which it is practised. It is nothing but a gimmick to hoodwink the public into believing that a democratic process has been upheld. Busy South Slope Block Getting Newly Protected Bike Lane (Patch.com)

The hardened bike lane, which is part of a $900 million safety pledge by the city, makes good on previously planned local street upgrades.

The existing South Slope plan also includes a protected two-way lane on 10th Avenue between 19th and 20th streets and a conventional bike lane on 19th Street from 10th to 11th avenues plus other design features, like changing the flow of traffic and adding mini roundabouts — upgrades that are already partially underway. At the end of last year, the DOT rolled out a series of traffic upgrades in South Slope, including as-yet-undefined bike boulevards and other features aimed at making it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to use the road. In South Slope, the bike lane also makes good on an already-promised plan to improve traffic and safety conditions in the blocks surrounding the north side of Green-Wood Cemetery.

Concerns have been raised with litter, loitering and trespassing, ward councillor says of walkway from Jonathan Court to Davidson Street.

“We talk about the walkable community, the connectivity. “It’s no different than any other school area,” said Coun. Robert Thomson. “Kids will be kids and we should have a little bit of hope in our youth. “I can tell you from lived experience that that walkway served many families. “It’s probably one of the best designed. “There was some mixed reaction from the school about that, but they did say it was worth exploring. “There’s been an ongoing issue with some students from Barrie North congregating in the area of Jonathan Court and they use this catwalk to access Jonathan Court,” Aylwin said.
