Last year, even though McLaren still had a significant gap to the front, it wasn't this big and Norris was able to defend against the charges of faster cars. The gap to the front might seem alarming for now, but this was still a positive outcome for the team. So it’s not the nicest thing to see but it’s the best we can do with our package and with our car, we just have to be very with these positions.

Verstappen and Red Bull embarrass Ferrari at Imola (WDIV ClickOnDetroit)

Formula One champion Max Verstappen dominated Sunday at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix and Red Bull embarrassed Ferrari on its home soil.

Leclerc came off pit road ahead of Pérez, but the Mexican driver had warmer tires and was able to squeeze inside and reclaim second. The race featured a stirring late battle between Mercedes newcomer George Russell and Valtteri Bottas, the driver he replaced. But Leclerc couldn't get the jump on Verstappen at the start and never contended. “The most important thing of today was not making mistakes, because with these conditions it was so tricky out there,” Pérez said. Pérez also failed to finish the season opener. Charles Leclerc came into Sunday as the championship leader with two wins in the first three races and Carlos Sainz Jr. celebrated a two-year contract extension this weekend in Italy.

He will hope to have an easier time of it today and retain the lead from pole at the start, but he knows at least he is a match for his title rival at Imola. 75 mins to lights out: Just as on Friday it its wet at Imola. There has been a lot of rain around in the last hour or so and conditions are treacherous to say the least. Charles Leclerc came to Imola having won two of the first three races of the season and the championship leader will hope he can bring further joy to his Italian employers today. The seven-time world champion has had a miserable 2022 so far and it hasn't got any better at Imola where he was only 14th in the Sprint on Saturday. 20 mins to lights out: This is an exciting era of F1 racing with three great races to start the 2022 season. Being on the right compound for the conditions at the correct time will be critical and could well define the outcome of the afternoon's proceedings. 10 mins to lights out: It has dried out quite quickly, at least on the starting grid, ahead of the race start. "Too risky" he says when the conversation on the pit radio comes up on whether to go on slicks yet. Red Bull have control of the race with Verstappen ahead of Perez. Leclerc immediately trying to pressurise Norris to get up to third and try and chase the front two. Lap 32: We are past halfway and Verstappen is 10 seconds ahead of Red Bull teammate Perez. Leclerc right behind the Mexican, with Norris fourth in his McLaren a further 14 seconds off the pace. Time and again the Mercedes gets right under the wing of the AlphaTauri into Turn 1, but with Gasly getting DRS from the Williams of Albon ahead he does not have the grunt to get through. Charles Leclerc had been on course for third but the championship leader spun off late in proceedings as he chased Perez for second.

Max Verstappen Conquers F1's Weekend At Imola As Leclerc Spins (Jalopnik)

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc now leads the World Drivers' Championship by 27 points.

Honorable mention to Aston Martin as the British team scored its first points of the season with both Sebastian Vettel finishing eighth and Lance Stroll finishing tenth. Max Verstappen won the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix to cap off a truly dominant weekend. Leclerc spent the rest of the race recovering from the poor start. At the start, Charles Leclerc had a dreadful launch as he was overtaken by both Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez and McLaren’s Lando Norris on the holeshot run to Tamburello. Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz and McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo made contact in the first corner, spinning Sainz into the gravel. The race would be effected by a heavy downpour after Formula 2’s feature race and before the F1 Grand Prix start. Though, the sprint returned the same front row as qualifying, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen starting Sunday’s race first and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc second.

Norris admits podium 'quite a shock' after McLaren start (RACER)

Lando Norris was amazed to finish on the podium in the fourth race of the season at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, given McLaren's poor start to 2022.

We beat two cars that are probably a second a lap quicker than us and one ended up in the wall and one ended up in the gravel. Maybe not surprising after the progress we made over the last month, but with how much quicker the Red Bulls and Ferraris are, it’s hard to ever imagine yourself on the podium. There was a step forward in Saudi Arabia but Melbourne showed the first glimpse of strength as both cars finished in the top six, and Norris followed that with a podium at Imola after Leclerc’s late error.

It needs to be a perfect weekend to be able to do this over and over again. Staying out of trouble at the start was one of the reasons the Briton claims to have had a trouble-free race later. McLaren suffered from severe brake heating issues which they had resolved using a temporary fix in Australia. Team principal Andreas Seidl had mentioned that their permanent solution to the problem was to arrive at Imola, after which they seemed to be back on pace. We won a lot in the start, I had a perfect start, honestly. We won a lot in the beginning and we just had really good pace throughout.
