2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix report and highlights: Verstappen ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

Max Verstappen won a dramatic wet-dry Emilia Romagna Grand Prix over team mate Sergio Perez as Ferrari couldn't deliver on home turf – Charles Leclerc ...

In the lead, you have to always dictate the pace, and it’s always a bit more difficult initially but everything was well managed." After his Lap 1 tangle with Sainz, Ricciardo had been the first driver to pit for slicks. Seventh-place Yuki Tsunoda overtook Magnussen with DRS on Lap 48 and took another off Vettel on Lap 54 – useful points for AlphaTauri just a few miles away from their Faenza factory despite the Japanese driver struggling for traction mid-race. Lap 50 saw Leclerc come in for soft tyres, triggering Perez then Verstappen to pit for the same compounds on the following laps. On another set of soft tyres, he recovered to P6 with late passes on Vettel and Tsunoda. The lights went out under grey skies, the whole field on intermediate tyres – Zhou Guanyu starting from the pit lane – in chase of Verstappen, who led away with Perez moving to second. The Silver Arrow finally got past at Variante Alta with a stunning move on Lap 13. The Dutchman was three seconds ahead of team mate Perez by that point, Leclerc another three seconds back. The Monegasque emerged just ahead of the Mexican, but Perez skated past for P2 with warmer tyres and then kept the Ferrari at bay. Rain may have washed away the glorious weather that graced the thousands of fans at Imola in the morning, but it did little to dampen their spirits – tifosi painting the grandstands red, smatterings of blue and white among them for AlphaTauri’s home race. The Dutchman topped Saturday’s Sprint and led off the line on Sunday, team mate Perez joining him at the front – while Leclerc momentarily dropped to fourth. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll rounded out the top 10, a double-points haul for the team that entered Imola on zero.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen looks to cut the points deficit to championship leader Charles Leclerc in Italy, with The Sporting News providing ...

He will hope to have an easier time of it today and retain the lead from pole at the start, but he knows at least he is a match for his title rival at Imola. 75 mins to lights out: Just as on Friday it its wet at Imola. There has been a lot of rain around in the last hour or so and conditions are treacherous to say the least. Charles Leclerc came to Imola having won two of the first three races of the season and the championship leader will hope he can bring further joy to his Italian employers today. The seven-time world champion has had a miserable 2022 so far and it hasn't got any better at Imola where he was only 14th in the Sprint on Saturday. 20 mins to lights out: This is an exciting era of F1 racing with three great races to start the 2022 season. Being on the right compound for the conditions at the correct time will be critical and could well define the outcome of the afternoon's proceedings. 10 mins to lights out: It has dried out quite quickly, at least on the starting grid, ahead of the race start. "Too risky" he says when the conversation on the pit radio comes up on whether to go on slicks yet. Red Bull have control of the race with Verstappen ahead of Perez. Leclerc immediately trying to pressurise Norris to get up to third and try and chase the front two. Lap 32: We are past halfway and Verstappen is 10 seconds ahead of Red Bull teammate Perez. Leclerc right behind the Mexican, with Norris fourth in his McLaren a further 14 seconds off the pace. Time and again the Mercedes gets right under the wing of the AlphaTauri into Turn 1, but with Gasly getting DRS from the Williams of Albon ahead he does not have the grunt to get through. Charles Leclerc had been on course for third but the championship leader spun off late in proceedings as he chased Perez for second.

Follow all the reaction from Imola as Red Bull celebrate a one-two on after a nightmare race for Ferrari.

Today, you never know with the weather how competitive you are going to be but as a team we did everything well. “I had a little bit of an exchange with him and said ‘sorry for the car today. But there are always tough moments in the life of a sportsman and it is my turn to go through them.” The team deserve it, from where we were in race one to a podium, it’s amazing. We just need to fix the car. Charles Leclerc rubs his head in frustration as he watches the podium finishers be interviewed. We got squeeze by the Alpine and then there is just no overtaking when you are in a DRS train. Really happy with this P4 but if we want to maintain this place in the championship we need to find more pace.” We are not good enough for the world champion. Lando Norris completed the podium and George Russell finished fourth with a commendable drive in the struggling Mercedes. We did not have the pace. “There are stats that sound nice on paper but are pretty meaningless,” says George Russell when told he is the only driver to finish in the top five.
