Johnny Depp Testifies in Amber Heard Defamation Trial (Vulture)

Johnny Depp is suing ex wife Amber Heard over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post. On Wednesday, Depp finally took the stand.

The first day of Depp’s testimony concluded with him looking back at his relationship with Heard. He said the relationship began when they filmed a shower scene for The Rum Diary. “I think there was something with the kiss in the shower that was very real,” Depp said. Wyatt was asked to describe interactions between Depp and Heard. He recalled being on a flight with them to Boston in 2014 and said that Heard “was giving Johnny the cold shoulder, being quiet, and seemed pouty.” “The op-ed’s clear implication that Mr Depp is a domestic abuser is categorically and demonstrably false,” his civil claim maintains. Wyatt described Depp glowingly, saying he was “great to work with on films” and “always comes prepared,” making for a “fun” day. He recalled the alleged water-bottle incident and remarked: “In California, it’s assault if you attempt to swing or throw something at somebody, even if you don’t hit them.” “At one point, I went up to her and said something to the effect of ‘He cares about you,’ and all of a sudden she snapped and said, ‘How dare you talk to me? All of a sudden it got very loud.” When asked if he had ever seen any violent or physical altercation between Depp and Heard, he responded: “I’ve never seen Johnny be violent toward anybody.” Heard’s attorney tried to ask Wyatt about Marilyn Manson, who is also an alleged abuser and suing his ex Evan Rachel Wood for defamation over her allegations against him detailed in her documentary, Phoenix Rising. They had previously brought up Manson during opening statements, describing him as Depp’s “good friend.” Depp said that he became addicted to the opioid Roxycodone after suffering an injury while filming the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean, and detoxed during his relationship with Heard. Get away from me!’” Wyatt said he “went back to my seat and minded my own business.” Heard, he said, “was abruptly loud. He was filling out job applications in “video stores, clothing stores, anything … just to be able to pay the rent.” Depp said that his friend, actor Nicolas Cage, told him, “I want you to meet my agent.” Cage told Depp he thought he could act. Depp said that he first abused drugs at 11, when he took one of his mother’s “nerve pills.” Depp claimed he didn’t take drugs for enjoyment. I was a musician, but the fact that these people were going to pay me what I found to be a ludicrous sum of money … I had never seen that kind of dough in my life.”

At one point he even admitted: “I forgot what the original question was.” “My goal is the truth, my goal is the truth,” he told the jury. Depp’s mother, Betty Sue Palmer, died in 2016. Depp takes stand, says Heard's abuse allegations are untrue ... (The Washington Post)

In defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, actor Depp says allegations have damaged his career and reputation.

(Depp lost a libel case in the United Kingdom in 2020 against the Sun when a headline called him a “wife beater,” though that has largely not come up during the U.S. trial.) “I am ashamed of some of the references I made. They kissed in a scene and felt a spark; later, he said, they kissed again in his trailer. “I can’t say that I’m embarrassed because I know that I’m doing the right thing.” He suddenly became much more recognizable; fans started trying to trespass onto his property and he had to hire tighter security. Depp said he first tried “nerve pills” at age 11 when he saw they calmed down his mother, and tried every drug imaginable by age 15. Speaking slowly and delivering lengthy answers at times, Depp delved into his childhood and talked about his mother being physically violent and verbally abusive. A murmur rippled through the crowd when his attorney called “John C. Depp” to the stand. In his testimony, Depp said he tried to be a private person and feels very exposed with these intimate details being spilled in public. The actor is suing Heard for $50 million for defamation over a 2018 op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post calling herself a survivor of domestic abuse, which Depp says caused further damage and irreparably destroyed his reputation and career. “It’s never been for the party effect. Depp’s testimony comes after four days of the plaintiff’s witnesses who have delved into some of the most personal aspects of his and Heard’s lives and marriage.

During his U.S. defamation trial in 2022, Depp expressed a desire to “clear” his name—not only for himself, but for his two children. Heard, who married Depp in 2015 after several years of dating, filed for divorce and obtained a restraining order against the actor in 2016. “I think that’s just the fact of life. “It was a complete shock,” Depp said during his testimony, reflecting on Heard’s allegations. The divorce was finalized in 2017 after the former couple reached an out-of-court settlement, of which Heard received $7 million and donated to charity. In a 2013 interview with Rolling Stone, the actor revealed, “With my kids, they’re told 75 times a day that they’re loved. Depp has spoken fondly about his kids many times in the past.

"For example, if I worked quite a lot and when I would come home from work, I would come in the house or the hotel, and she would sit me down on the couch and give me a glass of wine and take my boots off, set them to the side and I had never experienced anything like that in my life. Depp was adamant that after he detoxed from the drug, he never took it again. "I’m sorry to say, a lot of it is just plainly false," he testified, as Heard stared at him. “I’ve never struck a woman in my life and certainly not going to strike a woman if she decides to make fun of a tattoo that I have on my body.” “I’ve never used the word ‘party’ in my life.” Before delving into his relationship with Heard, Depp described his addiction to the opioid Roxicodone after getting hurt on set while filming the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean. He eventually went through withdrawal during his relationship with Heard, Depp said in his first day of testimony. “The way this is heading, I could see the jurors just being like, ‘Look she was a victim of domestic violence. “I was sort of not allowed to be right, not allowed to have a voice,” Depp said of his arguments with Heard. “So at a certain point, what enters your mind is, you start to slowly realize that you are in a relationship with your mother, and I know that that sounds perverse, obtuse, but the fact is some people [search] for weaknesses in people …” The fights and arguments escalated to become violent, he said. Johnny Depp's Net Worth Reveals How Much He Lost After His ... (StyleCaster)

Johnny Depp's net worth in 2022 reveals his divorce settlement and prenup with Amber Heard and how much he made from "Pirates of the Caribbean."

In a statement to E! News, a representative for Heard commended Depp for his donation to the ACLU and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles but said that her ex-husband should “honor the full amount by donating $14 million to charity, which, after accounting for his tax deduction, is equal to his $7 million payment obligation to Amber.” Depp also made a total $55 million for his role as Tarrant Hightopp, the Mad Hatter, in 2010’s Alice in Wonderland. His pay was a combination of a low base salary and high backend points that paid him eight figures after Alice in Wonderland earned more than $1 billion worldwide. “I don’t know what happened [in his private life], and I don’t know if it was fair, him losing the job, but I just knew that the show was going on, and I would’ve loved to have talked to him about it if I had the chance, but I just don’t know him in that sense,” he said. The site also reported that he earned $5 million for 1995’s Nick of Time and another $5 million for 1997’s Donnie Brasco. Depp paid some of that amount to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles in Heard’s name. No. No. It’s for the kids.” He also told the magazine that there was “a part of me that needs to have this kind of stimulation to the brain” when it came to his finances. According to Forbes, Depp made $55 million as his base salary for the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, On Stranger Tides, in 2011. The magazine explained that Depp had a “pay-or-play contract,” which requires that he be fully compensated whether or not the film is made or if he’s recast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Walt Disney Pictures, the production company behind the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, cut ties with Depp after his ex-wife, Amber Heard, accused him of assault in 2016. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Depp made $10 million for the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl, in 2003. Depp made around the same for the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie, At World’ End, which made him $55 million in total between his base salary and his backend points. In 2019, Depp sued Heard for a 2018 op-ed she wrote about her experience as a victim of domestic violence in The Washington Post, alleging that she was the abuser in their relationship.
