I love him in both positions. It (right centre-back) is less demanding physically in terms of accelerations, long acceleration, and high speed on a back three. “I think the back three is less demanding physically in comparison to the wing-back position. While that initially bodes well for Arsenal, it's important to note that they are actually stronger at home than away. "Obviously, as you all know he had Covid so he’s been away for a few days. On examination, this could be a high-scoring affair, with Chelsea keen to sew up Champions League qualification as soon as possible and Arsenal desperate to stay in the race. From being in a strong position suddenly they must win tonight simply to get back on level terms with fourth-placed Tottenham with both sides having six games to go. 70 minutes to KO: Not long now until the teams are announced but Arsenal will be wearing black armbands tonight. 60 minutes to KO: We have the Arsenal team for tonight. 100 minutes to KO: Arsenal must wish that they could press rewind and start April again. 40 minutes to KO: The teams will be out warming up shortly. 30 minutes to KO: The build-up on UK television is well under way with Sky Sports previewing the game. Chelsea have been the better side and did not deserve to be behind and they hit back immediately after Christensen's blunder had gifted Arsenal the lead. "There is nobody here" they sing in what seems to be a non-stop chant designed to mock their opponents. He leads their attacking statistics with 10 goals and eight assists and he has created 41 chances over the course of the season. Arsenal are looking a threat on the flanks when they do get the ball forward. Dream start for Arsenal and it is a real gift.

Chelsea v Arsenal: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Thomas Tuchel's side are back in form as the Gunners come to town. Join Rob Smyth for updates.

Chelsea are going to finish third, barring a tale of the seriously unexpected, whereas Arsenal are involved in an increasingly messy struggle for fourth place. Injuries, outgoing loans and the inherent irreplaceability of Thomas Partey have left Arsenal short in recent weeks, and few people fancy them to get anything tonight. There will be a reduced crowd at Stamford Bridge the night. Christensen played a poor backpass, well short of Mendy, and Nketiah was onto it in a flash. He cut inside and hit a pretty tame shot that took a deflection off Xhaka, who turned away from the ball, and spun past Ramsdale. I’m pretty sure Werner’s shot was going wide, in which case it will go down as a Xhaka own goal. Another way, perhaps, in which that Wenger-era Arsenal seems to span the birth of Football Today.” Loftus-Cheek won the ball 30 yards from goal and gave it to Werner on the left. It was an excellent break, starting with an indecently cool nutmeg on Alonso by Xhaka. Eventually Odegaard played a short pass to Smith Rowe, who ran onto the ball in the D and shaped a sweet first-time shot into the far corner. Nketiah turns Sarr smartly, 22 yards out, and cracks a left-footed shot just wide of the near post. It was a pretty poor challenge from Mount, actually, and he’s fortunate not to be booked. 25 min Saka’s deflected shot is headed across goal by Nketiah and volleyed off target by the stretching Tavares. No matter: Tavares was offside. That was crying out for Mick Harford, arriving late to put the ball and four Chelsea defenders into the net.

It was the 11th goal conceded by Chelsea in their last three home games and Azpilicueta's frustration boiled over in an angry exchange with a fan after the final whistle. Chelsea were hit with a sucker punch in the 27th minute as Xhaka and Saka led an incisive counter from a Blues corner, with Martin Odegaard teeing up Smith Rowe for a low strike past Mendy. Nketiah was released by Chelsea as a 16-year-old in 2015 and he exacted a measure of revenge with his first league goals this season.

Chelsea vs. Arsenal result: Nketiah's double revitalises top-four ... (Sporting News)

Arsenal look to revitalise their floundering hopes of finishing in the top four when they taken on FA Cup finalists Chelsea in the Premier League.

On examination, this could be a high-scoring affair, with Chelsea keen to sew up Champions League qualification as soon as possible and Arsenal desperate to stay in the race. Nketiah gets away on the left for Arsenal but his pass to Saka is intercepted and the chance is lost. 60 minutes to KO: We have the Arsenal team for tonight. Chelsea have been the better side and did not deserve to be behind and they hit back immediately after Christensen's blunder had gifted Arsenal the lead. 63 minutes: This is the longest Arsenal have held on to a lead so far. Arsenal are looking a threat on the flanks when they do get the ball forward. Cedric gets away on right and he has lots of space to find the unmarked Saka in the box, but he blazes his centre well wide of him and the chance is gone. The youngster has bagged his first Premier League goals of the season at what could prove to be a key juncture. Arteta makes his first change as Martinelli comes on for Nketiah who leaves to an ovation from the Arsenal support. Cedric is then caught by a late challenge by Mount who is booked as a result of the clash. Penalty for Arsenal and it wins the game for them. To the home side's annoyance that is interrupted by Holding going down with what appears to be a bit of cramp.

Chelsea vs. Arsenal score: Eddie Nketiah double delivers Gunners ... (CBSSports.com)

Eddie Nketiah scored his first two Premier League goals of the season on Wednesday and in the process guided Arsenal to three golden points as the Gunners ...

What is that he has brought in Mohamed Elneny for his first club minutes of any kind since New Year's Day. He has started one Premier League game this season, a defeat to Manchester United, and aside from the EFL Cup has been largely fourth choice midfielder. Just a half an hour to go until action is underway at Stamford Bridge. A massive game for both with plenty on the line. What a start for the visitors! Timo Werner with a lucky deflection at the corner of the box, and the ball somehow finds its way in! Now that seems to have changed a little bit and I suspect it might be an approach they vary throughout the 90 minutes. For almost every stoppage of play in the last five minutes he has been shouting at his No.7, commanding him to adjust his position to keep the pressure up on the Chelsea left. He hadn't scored in the league this season, but he comes in and delivers a surprising brace. It is a skill to be in a position to pounce on these sorts of opportunities. 2-2 at the break in what's been a wild match. Bringing on Martinelli should offer even more threat on the counter, he's a demon in the press. What a performance by the youngster with a point to prove. They recorded their fifth-lowest xG of the season at 0.75 and were held to just two shots on goal -- their worst performance since a 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Jan. 15.

Eddie Nketiah double hands Arsenal vital win amid Chelsea chaos (The Guardian)

Eddie Nketiah scored twice to give Arsenal a crucial 4-2 win over Chelsea as they chase a place in the top four.

The left wing-back found Nketiah and, when Silva, Sarr and N’Golo Kanté failed to clear, the striker prodded the ball past Mendy. Arsenal appealed for a foul on White; in truth the defender was not strong enough. After 32 minutes Mount hounded Ben White off the ball and crossed for César Azpilicueta, who escaped Tavares and prodded the ball home. The goal summed up Chelsea’s difficulties without Thiago Silva and Rüdiger at the back. The problem, however, was that the opening period summed up the contradictions in this Arsenal team. Two goals from Eddie Nketiah, his first in the league this season, were enough for them to go level on points with Tottenham in fourth place with six games left.

Richarlison finally forced a save from Kasper Schmeichel in the 67th minute but he wasted several good chances before redeeming himself with a scuffed shot in the second minute of stoppage time at the end of the game to grab a point. Harvey Barnes put the visitors in front in the fifth minute, poking home a pass from James Maddison from close range as Everton struggled to find their feet, and the home side did not register a shot on target in the first half. Misunderstandings and misalignment mar Lukaku's season at ... (The Guardian)

Romelu Lukaku could still thrive at Chelsea with a little time and love but has not been afforded either at Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku is an old 28, with more than 600 games in his legs for club and country and lacking some of the pace and sharpness of his early years. And in a way that little exchange summed up Lukaku’s season at Chelsea, a season of misunderstandings and misalignment, in which a £97.5m striker has somehow become the emblem of everything wrong with the club. He executed a delightful nutmeg on Gabriel early in the second half. Certainly you sense that the fans would feel no great nostalgia for Lukaku should Chelsea cut their losses and get rid of him in the summer. As shirtless Arsenal fans clambered over each other in the Shed End, as a fuming César Azpilicueta remonstrated with some of the few Chelsea supporters who were left in the ground, it was tempting to write this off as a classic slice of freak Premier League, a crunch London derby with all the logic and ambience of a Carabao Cup fourth-round tie. There are games of football that feel like the inevitable product of their circumstances: system against system, the attacking and defensive patterns predetermined days in advance, the result telegraphed from the moment the first ball is kicked.

This is not a crisis, so why are Tuchel and Chelsea behaving like it is ... (The Athletic)

Chelsea are very likely to finish third and have an FA Cup final to look forward to - yet their players and coach look to be in crisis mode.

There is still one more trophy still to win and for some of Tuchel’s squad, with a summer of change on the horizon, it could be the last chance. Or is it perhaps due to the broader destabilising backdrop of the sale process finally manifesting itself in both performances on the field and the atmosphere in the stands? Chelsea unquestionably need a swift resolution to the latter to provide some much-needed clarity on and off the pitch. Self-inflicted wounds tend to sting more and they have disproportionately undermined Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea fans have watched only two league wins in the first four months of 2022. Reece James, again deployed on the right of the back three in an attempt to nullify Arsenal’s attacking speed, managed nothing of the sort and his own quality in the final third was sorely missed. He quickly brushed off the suggestion that the scoreline highlighted the importance of Antonio Rudiger, pointing out his involvement in seven goals conceded in two games against Brentford and Real Madrid. He didn’t attempt to minimise the pattern of glaring mistakes that are making it “simply impossible” to win consistently at Stamford Bridge.

Awakened Arsenal push creaking Chelsea to the brink of disaster ... (Eurosport.com)

With a little help from the bouncing ball, Arsenal keep the race for fourth alive, while Chelsea's miserable home form continues.

A big twist of the neck, a firm— hang on. But let's pause for a moment and imagine the scene, as the referee strides back onto the pitch and tells the assembled teams that, yes, him there bit him there. They gently uncoupled from the title race over the winter, and have since slowly drifted back into the reach of the rest of the league; not a collapse, but a slow deflation. The opposition are there to turn up, provide a backdrop for each side to exercise against, and then go home. But the energy's the same: not yet a crisis, but all the conditions are there. The Premier League likes to pretend that anybody can beat anybody, but here at the sharp end of the season, we can see that the superclubs bend reality around themselves. With Manchester United debasing themselves on Tuesday evening, it's tempting to assume that the race for fourth is down to Spurs and Arsenal. But we do have to wonder if Chelsea are being dragged down into the scrap. they came out and they won the thing? Obviously the impending north London derby to end all north London derbies is going to make everybody at Premier League headquarters extremely happy, but it's going to make a fair few people in north London pretty upset. The first half was a mortal insult to the very concept of defending: the strikers worked hard to make goals happen and the defenders worked even harder. They came out and controlled the thing? Or, and this speaks for most of the nation, you're hoping that something daft will happen.

Tennis icon Serena Williams and auto racing star Lewis Hamilton have pledged money to a group seeking to buy Chelsea.

But on March 2, after Russia had invaded Ukraine and amid calls for the British government to freeze Abramovich’s assets, he announced he was selling the club. Here’s what that means for the USMNT. Williams, a 23-time grand slam winner and seven-time Wimbledon champion, is an investor in Angel City FC, which will begin play later this month in the National Women’s Soccer League. In 2011, NBA star LeBron James purchased a 2 percent stake in Premier League club Liverpool, an investment that has grown in value as the team has resumed its position among the giants of European Football. Last year, James increased his ownership stake in the club, becoming a minor partner of Fenway Sports Group, the American consortium that owns Liverpool. The three contenders submitted final bids last week, with the expected sale price somewhere around $4 billion. A Hamilton spokesperson confirmed to the Guardian that the seven-time Formula One champion — a fan of Arsenal, another London-based Premier League club — has joined Broughton’s bid.

Tuchel struggles to make case for the defence as Chelsea flirt with ... (The Guardian)

Chelsea need a rethink – the mess against Arsenal did not come out of the blue and Thomas Tuchel knows it.

There were 10,000 empty seats in the home sections on Wednesday, with the club unable to fill the ground because of the government’s sanctions on Roman Abramovich, and it is not making excuses to suggest that Chelsea are crying out for the clarity a takeover will provide. He knows it is not about quality of the pitch. The Denmark centre-back’s mind already appeared to be at the Camp Nou when he blundered for Nketiah’s first goal and he was lucky to last 45 minutes before Tuchel took him off at half-time for the second time in four matches. The laxness has infuriated Tuchel and he did not want to pin the collapse against Arsenal on Antonio Rüdiger’s absence. It was as if Chelsea had never seen Arsenal before and the alarming thing for Tuchel, whose side have conceded 11 goals in three home games, is that this performance did not come out of the blue. “It is a very difficult pitch we have here,” Tuchel said as his thoughts turned to Andreas Christensen setting Arsenal on their way to victory by handing Eddie Nketiah the opening goal with a comical shank.

If the bid is selected, it wouldn’t be Williams’s first foray into the world of soccer. The duo joins a bid reportedly worth more than £200 million headed by Martin Broughton, a British businessman and former Liverpool chairman. A spokesperson for Hamilton, who is a seven-time Formula One champion, confirmed his involvement in the bid to The Guardian.

Why Very Rich People Want to Buy Chelsea FC So Badly (Slate Magazine)

Buy Chelsea, buy good players who win trophies for you, and buy a lot of public goodwill while having the time of your life. It is not special, on its own, that a lot of people with a lot of money want to buy one of the most prominent clubs in the most popular league in the most popular sport in the world. For non-Ricketts bidders, though, there’s a chance to be an oddly sympathetic figure, and to “save” the team on the pitch much like Abramovich did in the 2000s. If whoever buys the team from Abramovich does not keep up the winning, they will suffer the ultimate indignity for someone who owns a club of this magnitude: getting yelled at a bit and either ignoring it or, if it gets truly unbearable, selling out for what is likely to be a significant profit. The family later backed out, citing “the unusual dynamics around the sales process.” That the Rickettses managed to become the villains of this story, given who they tried to buy the club from at this geopolitical moment, is a captivating achievement on the part of the family. The Rickettses’ problem was not that they let one of the best young teams in baseball die on the vine, but that family patriarch Joe Ricketts is apparently deeply Islamophobic. Fan protests against the family’s involvement prompted the Rickettses to make a series of promises about their stewardship of the club, like an upgrade to its Stamford Bridge stadium and that it would never join a European super league. Part of it is the circumstance of the transaction. The three remaining candidates seem to mostly be in the “dudes who love owning sports teams and have cash burning holes in their pockets” class, with some additional financial muscle added to their bidding groups. You will probably make a lot of money, and your asset will appreciate. The other reason the sale is such a mega-event is Chelsea’s stature as a club. It is not even that notable that many of those people seem to want it, as much as anything, for its functions as a status symbol. Some of them are standard: Owning a soccer team is fun.

Andreas Christensen: Chelsea's Recent Defensive Performances ... (Sports Illustrated)

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has insisted that the Blues' recent defensive performances have not been good enough after losing to Arsenal.

We have to go again and I’m sure the fans will be there again at the weekend to support us, which we need.” I understand any frustrations because we weren’t good enough & we know we have to do a lot better. We spoke about it in the dressing room, because we’ve now conceded 10 goals in our last three home games and that’s nowhere near good enough.”
