On 12th April 2022, Google Doodle honoured legendary Spanish opera singer Monserrat Caballé on what would have been her 89th birthday.

Caballé is shown posing with her granddaughter Daniela, the daughter of Montserrat Marti and Daniel Faidella, in the 2011 photograph below that was taken in Barcelona, Spain. Caballé suffered a stroke in Yekaterinburg during her tour in Russia on 20th October 2012 and was quickly transferred to the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona. Montserrat Caballé was a Spanish operatic soprano, a term which refers to the opera performer with the highest voice, widely admired for her versatility and phrasing.

She was said to have "a personality that was larger-than-life" but her music is the legacy she left behind. The Spanish operatic soprano was known as Montserrat Caballé and her nickname La Superba.

She made her U.S. debut in 1965 at Carnegie Hall and eventually became an international opera star. Caballé went on to give more than 3,800 performances in over 80 roles on five continents. Caballé was born on this day in 1933 in Barcelona, Spain. Caballé spent much of her childhood studying music and training her voice.

She was known not only for her music but also for her larger-than-life personality. According to a leading US publication company, The Washington Post Bel canto is described as the ‘quintessential way to sing opera’. She then went on to perform with the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, and Vienna State Opera. The audience used to love her for her rare bel canto vocal technique.

Revered Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballe, one of the greats of 20th-century opera, is being remembered on what would have been her 89th birthday.

She won the Grammy award for Best Classical Vocal Performance in 1968. She made her American debut in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall in New York City on 20 April 1965, replacing the pregnant Marilyn Horne and earning a 25-minute standing ovation. After his death, she always wore a red ribbon on her lapel to promote Aids research. “When Caballe began her first aria, there was a perceptible change in the atmosphere,” critic John Gruen wrote of the performance in The New York Herald Tribune. A Newsweek review of her performance that same year in another Donizetti opera, Roberto Devereux, noted: “Her fiery temperament so dominated the stage that the other able singers seemed made of papier-mache.”
