Restricted by the $140 million cost cap, who will best manage their assets and deliver the most impactful upgrades throughout the 2022 Formula 1 season?
The inherent advantage to Haas in this new era is easy to see, but not because of their own experience. In the final season before the implementation of the cost cap, they were operating under a budget of just $80 million, compared to the likes of Mercedes with a budget of $450 million. Historically a low performer entering new regulatory eras, Ferrari have finally gotten it right with a package that could give Charles Leclerc his first genuine run at a world championship. This practice was one of the key motivators in implementing the cost cap that currently resides at $140 million for each team. Having to work around a lacking Mercedes power unit, where can the iconic British manufacturer make significant gains? With exceeding financial resources compared to competitors on the grid, powerhouse manufacturers were formerly able to throw money at their problems and eventually discover incremental pace improvements.
Formula 1 parent company Liberty Media is reportedly seeking $75 million per year in US broadcast rights, which could mean ads during races.
But if ESPN, or another outlet that came in with a strong enough offer to convince Liberty Media to leave the platform and brand of ESPN, felt the need to run ads due to a massive rights number, that would be a huge loss. That is a massive, massive win for viewers, and it’s a huge part of why F1 has started to catch on. And as for those advertisers, the sport is limited in some ways when it comes to the American television model. Formula 1 might be growing in the United States, with a demographic appealing to advertisers, but the audiences are still in the low-seven figures. $75 million would obviously be a huge increase, and in the neighborhood where ESPN would perhaps have to consider the value proposition. Part of that, of course, is that there was so much room for it to grow to begin with; unlike the major American sports (including motorsports like NASCAR), the public consciousness hasn’t been saturated for decades.
Formula 1 drivers in Australia concerned that too many new venues will push out traditional series stops.
So, I mean, I don't know, what's the situation exactly but I’m not happy to hear that it's under threat at the moment and I will do everything I can to keep it on the calendar.” Belgium’s deal at Spa-Francorchamps is also up soon, while the arrival of Miami and upcoming presence of Las Vegas is likely to place a little more pressure on Monaco’s status as an untouchable round. This year there are set to be 22 Grands Prix (and most likely 23 when a replacement for the canceled Russian GP is found). And, with the addition of Las Vegas and prospective return of China, there is the potential for 24 events. Take the 22 events listed currently, add returning Qatar and China, and Las Vegas, and you reach 25—one more than the contracted limit. I’m pretty sure there are going to be a lot of hydrated people in the paddock on Saturday.” Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton described the development as “awesome” and “will be good for the business” of Formula 1.

Domenicali told CNN Business that "it was impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances and we have also terminated the contract." The changes that have happened since 2017 have helped grow the sport and make it more sustainable for everyone," Domenicali said. "Diversity and inclusion are hugely important to our sport. It won't happen overnight, but we all have a greater chance of making an impact and highlighting issues by being there, with the spotlight and attention we bring." It's also not lost on Domenicali that the lack of diversity is another signficant issue. "Drama and controversy are part of our sport and to pretend it is not would be wrong," Domenicali said.

“I think there needs to be a limit for the number of races we keep adding, so in the end some other races are going to pay the price of having to stay out,” Sainz said. “On the other hand, I think we need to be careful with the number of races. “So I think it’s all just a good thing, but important that we keep a fair share of proper racing tracks that we’re used to and have a good history, and not an all-street-circuits kind of thing. So I think that’s the only concern if we keep adding races.” I think Las Vegas for example is going to be very exciting, and Miami and these kind of weekends. “As drivers we do still love the old-school tracks, and tracks which have been around for years and have good history to them,” Norris said. “It’s the way it is, the way Formula 1 is going, so we accept that,” Alonso said. “I think we have to find a balance of course,” Max Verstappen said. “It’s a cool place and also I think the track and in general the race weekend will be pretty crazy, with a lot of people attending,” Verstappen said. “I think it’s great — it’s amazing the relationship we have now, three races, I think that’s going to be awesome,” Lewis Hamilton said. “But it’s still important that we evolve and adapt to the new situations and the bigger following that we have now. As a night race that incorporates part of the Strip in the track layout, the drivers are excited to be racing in an iconic setting and seeing the American expansion continue.

The FIA is planning a clampdown on the underwear that Formula 1 drivers use on safety grounds following talks in Australia.
Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, he reminded drivers in the event notes that wearing jewellery in the car was not permitted due to concerns about safety and extrication from cars. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said that he heard it was an “entertaining drivers’ briefing yesterday”. There are concerns that some drivers have been wearing their underwear which is not in compliance with the FIA regulations, which are in place to protect them in the event of a fire.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc took the first Australian Grand Prix pole position since 2019 with a blistering performance at Albert Park – with Max Verstappen ...
Mercedes opted for two flying efforts, Russell going half a tenth ahead of Hamilton on his first one – with the seven-time champion having made a mistake in Sector 3. That left Alonso 10th – a purple second sector hinting agonisingly at what could have been for the two-time champion. However, there was plenty of time – more than six minutes – for the order to change. Perez, awaiting news of a possible penalty, was 0.372s off pole in a provisional P3. It feels great, and very happy to be on pole tomorrow," said pole-sitter Charles Leclerc. The order however will change as Albon carries a three-place grid penalty for his collision with Stroll in Saudi Arabia. That left the Ferraris third and fourth, Charles Leclerc three-tenths off the pace and Carlos Sainz another tenth away – with Fernando Alonso fifth for Alpine. Alonso’s brilliant run came to a painful end when his Alpine swapped ends at Turn 11, bringing out a red flag with seven minutes remaining. Before Alonso’s unfortunate crash, Leclerc had set the fastest time of 1m 18. They took a provisional 19th and 20th while stewards deliberate. Vettel, having crashed out of FP3, emerged after the red flag thanks to a herculean response from his crew, and managed to jump to P18 with Latifi 19th and Stroll last – piling more pressure on Aston Martin after his FP3 crash – on the provisional grid. Verstappen topped Q1 and Red Bull team mate Perez led Q2 – the Mexican driver under investigation for not slowing for a caution in Q1 – but Ferrari regrouped and it was Leclerc who aced the top 10 shootout with a time of 1m 17.868s to keep Verstappen 0.286s at bay in P2.

Esteban Ocon was eighth, the first time he’s ever made Q3 in Melbourne. Aston Martin had to repair their cars more times than they can remember, which contributed to ending one of Sebastian Vettel’s proud records, while Lewis Hamilton couldn’t buck the odds and grab a seventh straight pole at Albert Park. Here are some of the best facts and stats from F1’s return to Melbourne… Lewis Hamilton’s fifth is the first time he’s been outside the top three in Australia since 2010, when he was 11th for McLaren.
How long has it been since Formula 1 raced in Melbourne? The most recent Australian Grand Prix marked the F1 debut of a so-called "billion dollar brand".
Before the 2021 season, Storey claimed that his brand was returning to Formula 1, but a lack of details surrounding the supposed “Chapter 2” led to skepticism. Indeed, nothing happened for 2021, so he began making claims that the return would actually be happening in 2022. Grosjean was forced to retire with a wheel issue while Magnussen finished in sixth. Lewis Hamilton was a five-time world champion seeking his third consecutive title, Charles Leclerc was making his Ferrari debut, and Max Verstappen had five career wins to his name. The 2020 season ended up consisting of just 17 races. The last time Formula 1 visited Albert Park Circuit was in March 2020, when the Australian Grand Prix was scheduled to kick off a record-breaking 22-race schedule.
Charles Leclerc claimed pole position for the Australian Grand Prix with an exceptional lap for Ferrari in Melbourne to beat Red Bull's Max Verstappen into ...
Various corners have been reprofiled while the chicane at what was turns nine and 10 has been removed, allowing a long run along the lake to the challenging fast chicane at the back of the circuit. It ends a remarkable streak for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes at Albert Park. Hamilton has taken a record eight poles here including the last six in a row. Stroll however set no time and was in 19th with Sebastian Vettel in 18th. On his first hot runs in Q3 Leclerc, who has looked in fine form all weekend, set the pace with a 1minute 18.239sec time but it was only one-tenth up on Pérez, who had been very competitive throughout qualifying. Overtaking has traditionally been very tricky at Albert Park but there is optimism that changes to the circuit this year should make for a more competitive race. Yet Leclerc had even more, his final lap was immense, clocking 1m 17.868sec to leave his rivals reeling, a full three-10ths up on Verstappen.

This is the last thing I would have wanted; the goal here was to have a clean weekend and so this is extremely frustrating.” Sadly, the congested track and the cooler tyres meant that Alex could not improve, but it was a valiant effort in the circumstances. We struggled a bit with the balance in qualifying, but we cleared a very tight battle with our rivals in Q1 and we still got into a position that will allow us to fight for the points tomorrow. We did the best we could and we had the right approach to this session. I don’t think the result is representative of what the car can do in the race – there is more to come. Hopefully we’ll be in a position to fight tomorrow as the car in the long run felt good and we were able to follow, so hopefully we can follow and pass.” "We found a bit of pace overnight with the changes and were able to get the tyres in a better temperature region today but there wasn't much left in the car. “It was hard but there was potential to be in the top 10. It wasn’t the right thing to do and that costs us a couple of tenths, but Charles put in a tremendous lap, he put everything together and I didn’t. Hopefully tomorrow in the race we can be a lot closer, make it hard for them, have a strong race and enjoy it. We saw that McLaren and Alpine have made a step forward, we just didn’t have the pace to do much better. "Compared to yesterday and to the last race, today was a good day for me. After the difficult start to the season, today’s result is a great boost for everyone in the team, both here at the track and back home.

All licensed and legal operators in the United States have resources available to bettors, including educational guides on how to spot problem gaming, links to support services and tools to self-exclude for a set period of time. The final driver selection is Alex Albon, who picked up a 13th-place finish in Bahrain. Constructor choice Red Bull is slightly more economical this week than Ferrari but offers similar potential. It has quickly become apparent that the early-season battle for victories is down to Verstappen and Leclerc. Since Ferrari has a better handle on tire management with Mebourne’s new surface, we are going with Leclerc as the team captain this week. Those willing to take Leclerc for the fastest lap will see a better return on their choice than Verstappen. Sainz has finished on the podium in both races so far this year. Max Verstappen outfoxed Charles Leclerc in Saudi Arabia to spring back with a victory after his disappointing Bahrain retirement.

The FIA has clarified Formula 1's safety car restart rules to prevent drivers employing tactics including the side-by-side move Max Verstappen has used ...
“For sure this is a very driver specific preparation that we go through in every race and we start to understand what other drivers do at the restarts,” Sainz added. “We look at everyone – not only Max, let’s say. The governing body is keen drivers keep a constant speed when running in order behind the leader once the safety car has been withdrawn – until the leader returns to racing speed for good – to avoid a repeat of the enormous accident that marred the 2020 Tuscan GP at Mugello.

So it's a bit of a mystery to me why we don't have it. "It's just been a big struggle and clearly we didn't really seem to fix it even in qualifying. "It’s been terrible for me all weekend so far," said Verstappen of the RB18's performance.

We struggled a bit with the balance in qualifying, but we cleared a very tight battle with our rivals in Q1 and we still got into a position that will allow us to fight for the points tomorrow. We did the best we could and we had the right approach to this session. He was in a good position and had prepared his tyres well and so it is a shame that we didn't get to see the final result. We're finding that we need to do a couple of push laps to get the tyres in the optimum window, and unfortunately, my second lap on the second set of tyres was interrupted by the red flag. There's a lot of damage to the car so we'll have to see what the guys can do and I know we have one of the best teams for that. The team have done an amazing job overnight to maximise the performance of the car, so we were in a position to fight for more. It wasn't the right thing to do and that costs us a couple of tenths, but Charles put in a tremendous lap, he put everything together and I didn't. Hopefully tomorrow in the race we can be a lot closer, make it hard for them, have a strong race and enjoy it. I have not had much running this weekend so hopefully we can have a clean race tomorrow and learn more about the car." It was low and at an inconvenient angle and it was almost impossible to see where I was in Q2 and most of Q3. I took a lot of risks and I'm glad that I managed to put together such a good lap in the end. I like this car, we are all learning every time we drive these new cars and tomorrow in the race I want to make a big step." Max Verstappen (2nd, 1:18.154): "The weekend so far has been a bit of a struggle, there is a gap between Charles and I, but second of course is not bad and I think there is a lot more potential in the car than we are showing at the moment. The gaps to Ferrari and Red Bull are still worryingly large but not a surprise to us - we've known since Bahrain that we have a mountain to climb this year and the team is getting stuck into that challenge.

It’s unlikely anyone will start on the soft tyre – which is two steps softer than the medium at this race – because the degredation is expected to be so high on that compound. The result is that lap times have come down by around three seconds – and overtaking should be easier. But what kind of race will they see on Sunday? Let’s take a look at the options available to the teams and drivers when the action gets under way at Albert Park…
It was the race that brought Formula 1 to Australian shores — but has Adelaide's grand prix been forgotten as a crucial marker in Aussie sport?
"Then, in 1994, Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill are fighting for the driver's championship and they actually collide. Adelaide hosted the Australian GP for 11 years and, in 1995, 210,000 fans attended the final race day. "The narrative has always been that Melbourne stole the grand prix but the reality is South Australia was in a position where it was almost impossible to keep hold of it. "There were so many other iconic drivers who raced the unique street circuit. The first chicane of the circuit was renamed 'Senna Chicane', and there is also a permanent memorial to the Brazilian driver in Victoria Park. The Adelaide grand prix was the final race of the season and, because teams and drivers had spent a long year travelling the world, the Adelaide event was regarded as a bit of party, a place they could finally relax and celebrate.
