Charles Leclerc set the pace during Friday practice for the Australian Grand Prix as Formula One cars returned to the Albert Park circuit for the first time ...

An engine issue 45 minutes into the first practice session meant the team had to replace his car's power unit once it returned to the garage, and the job wasn't finished in time for the second session. Magnussen was ill overnight and missed his media commitments on Friday morning, but was cleared fit to drive in both sessions in the afternoon. The summons was entitled "unauthorised use of a scooter on the track" and will see Vettel visit the stewards' office at 5:45 p.m. local time. "There's not a lot we can do, this is the way it is, just have to drive with it. "Nothing we change on the car makes a difference at the moment. Leclerc's fastest time, a 1:18.978, was 0.245s clear of Verstappen and 0.398s faster than the second Ferrari of Carlos Sainz in third place.

Leclerc frustrated by “Charles 2.0” suggestions over 2022 F1 form (autosport.com)

Ferrari Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc has refuted suggestions that his winning form in 2022 reflects a transition to a “2.0” version of himself.

How much everyone has of margin, it's difficult to know. It's great to be back here. “It's still very clear to me where I need to work on this car to get better and better,” he said. “Obviously seeing the last few years that have been very difficult, and now to be back at the top, gives a lot of motivation to the whole team, to me and yeah, it's good to be here.” And also fighting in between seventh and fourth position, whenever you are doing very good performance, nobody's noticing it, which makes it quite tricky. “I never particularly struggled with pressure, I have a mindset that is just focusing on myself, on the job I have to do in the car, and not thinking too much about results and all that is around.

Mercedes driver George Russell believes having the Australian Grand Prix as a standalone event is 'too tough' on Formula 1 teams amid a 23-race season.

"There's no reason why we couldn't have done a back-to-back with one of the Middle Eastern races. The season started with a Middle East double-header in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. I think it needs to be thought about more.

"We are heading in a good direction and we’ll try to build from there tomorrow.” “For our car, I would prefer to stay with the old layout but that’s only from a performance point of view,” Leclerc said. We know we have put together on track a great car but these two teams have been in the title fight for the last two or three years. Sainz and Leclerc were 1-2 in the first practice, but Sainz cautioned against expecting too much of his Ferrari team. It’s a bit smoother and it makes the track nicer as well because you can actually attack the corners a bit more," Verstappen said. Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, who led after the first practice session, was third.

The Australian Grand Prix weekend starts on Thursday/Friday (depending on where you are in the world) with practice 1 and 2. Kayo Sports (opens in new tab) is another option. As usual, Sky Sports F1 will show the 2022 Australian Grand Prix live stream, and in up to 4K resolution. Cord-cutters will want to check out TSN Direct (opens in new tab), which comes in day- and month-long passes for $8 or $20 CAD, respectively. Not actually in Canada at the moment? The TSN app (opens in new tab) will allow you to live stream the race from your phone, streaming box or supported device. For instance if you're in the U.S. and want to view an Australian service, you'd select Australia from the list. But what if you're usually based in one of those countries but aren't at home for the Australian Grand Prix live stream? And the good news for this race is that it's being shown FOR FREE on Australia's 10Play (opens in new tab) service. However, you'll need to authenticate with your satellite, cable or live TV provider credentials to watch any sessions. To take Australia as an option, an Aussie who's currently outside of the country could tune into 10play (opens in new tab) for Australian Grand Prix coverage simply by signing up for a free account then using one of the best VPN services. Leclerc won the first race, in Bahrain, with Verstappen taking the next race in Saudi Arabia, and the two duelled thrillingly throughout both.

“It is just nothing you change on the car makes a difference at the moment so that is the difficult thing. “Turn 11, it is much different, much more square and a bit more bumpy on the apex. Additionally, there was a problem with his radio volume, which was also noted by the Stewards in their review, that prevented him from hearing calls from his team about ZHO’s approach. “It could be like a MotoGP race where you could be changing two or three times a lap. “So more to come from that tyre but otherwise, I felt like I was getting on the limit. So, the distances of these DRS zones are going to be quite interesting to see. “I think we found a good set in the afternoon. “Obviously there is financial interest in new places that we are going to and F1 is a business. “It stopped our running, which was painful and unfortunately cost us the whole session in the afternoon, which is not ideal. It has left Mercedes and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton with significant work to do, as the team struggle to overcome the difficulties they’ve been having with the aerodynamics of their W13 car. I haven’t been in the car for a while, plus the track is different. The former world champion came in 13th in his Mercedes, following his disappointing finish in Saudi Arabia.

Why the Addition of F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix Puts French GP in ... (Autoweek)

Formula 1 drivers in Australia concerned that too many new venues will push out traditional series stops.

So, I mean, I don't know, what's the situation exactly but I’m not happy to hear that it's under threat at the moment and I will do everything I can to keep it on the calendar.” Belgium’s deal at Spa-Francorchamps is also up soon, while the arrival of Miami and upcoming presence of Las Vegas is likely to place a little more pressure on Monaco’s status as an untouchable round. This year there are set to be 22 Grands Prix (and most likely 23 when a replacement for the canceled Russian GP is found). And, with the addition of Las Vegas and prospective return of China, there is the potential for 24 events. Take the 22 events listed currently, add returning Qatar and China, and Las Vegas, and you reach 25—one more than the contracted limit. I’m pretty sure there are going to be a lot of hydrated people in the paddock on Saturday.” Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton described the development as “awesome” and “will be good for the business” of Formula 1.

“I feel like especially the past two years, it's been a challenge in IndyCar and there's a lot that I still want to accomplish here. “Michael (Andretti) and I talk all the time, he and I have a very good relationship of not only him as a boss, but him as a friend. “I've had a lot of history with Andretti and since we last renewed in 2019, none of us had been happy with the results; I haven't, they haven't, we all had different expectations. “I don't want this to come across as like arrogant, but I feel like every year we are one of the cars to beat at Indy. Of all the races, that’s one of them that we should have our best shot at winning and it’s certainly on our priority list. There had been substantial talk that Alonso might even race full-time in the IndyCar Series before he came out of a three-year F1 retirement from F1 and signed with the Alpine F1 team. And they also got introduced to a form of racing that made them kind of fall back in love with motorsports because, I'll be honest, Formula One kind of drains the life out of you in a lot of ways as a driver.” “So I think me and the team, through the first part of this year, we're trying to evaluate where we're at. I think we're looking at what are all the options is the best way of putting it. “So people saw what that did for my career and what that did for my life and everything, all the positives that came from that. “So for me going over to IndyCar in 2016, it was kind of like watching one of their own do that, and then the success that we did. “Guys like Marcus Ericsson and Romain Grosjean, I think they all saw IndyCar as something that, well, ‘I raced against Alex and I beat Alex sometimes (in F1). So why don't I go have a career over there? Rossi grew up in northern California and while he enjoyed CART and then IndyCar, always had his focus on F1. When he moved there, his high expectations turned into brutal reality, starting just five races on the global stage for the Manor Marussia Team—with a best finish of 12th.
