What matters is after a patron-less Masters in the fall of 2020 and a limited gallery last spring, the first tee was surrounded once again to honor this tradition unlike any other. The men, with 11 Masters wins between them, did their duty—first Player, followed by Nicklaus and then Watson—striking their shots to begin the 2022 tournament in earnest. Other players who have been Honorary Starters include Byron Nelson, Gene Sarazen, Ken Venturi, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Nicklaus, Player and Lee Elder. Watson is the latest to join these ranks, named as an honorary starter this past January.

Masters 2022 live updates: Tiger Woods 1-under through 17 ... (USA TODAY)

Five-time champion Tiger Woods competes for the first time since his near-fatal car crash. Follow for live updates at the Masters.

After parring the first two holes, Spaun had a double bogey on the third hole and bogey on the fourth. He chipped to within 10 feet, then made the putt to begin his round with a par. -- shirt, black pants and black hat, the five-time Masters champion worked through the clubs in his bag, testing out his irons first before moving to his woods. He left the tee shot short and then tried for a long putt, but left that short, too, before he made par. Fans were seated several rows deep in the area, and several of them had to pick up their chairs and clear out briefly while Scott first located his ball and then hit his shot. But, then on the fifth, Tiger's approach off of the tee, from 218 yards out, was a thing of beauty. He easily sank the birdie putt after his birdie chance on No. 5 lipped out. His birdie try was on the right path, but he left it just a touch short, forcing the two-putt par. Tiger Woods pulled out a 3-wood once again off the tee, this time at No. 7. With 213 yards to the pin, Tiger gave himself a great look at eagle, finding the green just 24 feet away. His second shot stayed left and again he found the patrons. Even if he does all that, will he be able to play at the elite level needed to make the cut and continue to the weekend?

Competitive but cordial honorary starters launch Masters 2022 (WRDW-TV)

In a ceremony delayed 30 minutes by early morning rain, three honorary starters launched the 2022 Masters Tournament.

“I’ve watched this ceremony many times in the past ... and to be a part of this thing, I’m truly humbled.” “He makes a mistake, which every one of you in this room has made a mistake. “Yes! It was successful,” he said, drawing more laughter. “No running at Augusta National,” a security staff member politely said. And then the stage was set for Watson, who won the first of his two green jackets 45 years ago. Of Nicklaus, he said: “Jack was best player to take the element of risk out of every shot he played.” Player, the three-time Masters champion who has long been an advocate of physical fitness, was first to play. “There’s a sense of entitlement on this planet today, and we’re not entitled to a damn thing,” he said. Player said he felt “a great sense of gratitude to be here at 86 years of age and still be teeing off.” “I was immensely honored and deeply humbled” to be asked to be an honorary starter “I felt honored to be out there,” Watson said. “I would like to say how honored I am to be with Gary and Jack,” Watson said.

2022 Masters predictions, favorites: Ranking the entire field from 1 ... (CBSSports.com)

Augusta National has reached a fever pitch ahead of the 2022 Masters as anticipation has grown throughout the world for the year's first major tournament.

77. Guido Migliozzi (first appearance): After grinning his way to a T4 at the U.S. Open at Torrey last year, he's made just one cut in 2022, and it was a T67 at the Ras al Khaimah Championship. He's somehow lost strokes in every statistical category in every tournament except for the three events in which he narrowly gained strokes off the tee. 74. Takumi Kanaya (T58 in 2019): Kanaya is coming off a good showing at the match play in Austin, but broadly speaking, he's not a great iron player, which seems problematic in a week like this one. 67. Charl Schwartzel (Won in 2011): Schwartzel has had a completely bizarre record at Augusta since winning maybe the wildest Masters of all time in 2011. He's been playing solid golf of late, and he gets the lefty advantage at Augusta. I'm in on him to finish in the top 25 or so. 46. Bubba Watson (Won in 2012, 2014): This tournament marks the 10-year anniversary of his famous hooking shot out of the woods on the 10th hole. 45. Kevin Kisner (T21 in 2019): He's been playing such tremendous golf, but this is not a course that necessarily sets up that well for him, and his history here (two straight missed cuts and no top-20 finishes) shows it. 22. Marc Leishman (T4 in 2013): I imagine he's been running Leishman National pretty fast on the stimpmeter for a few weeks now to help him prepare for this year's event. 11. Viktor Hovland (T21 in 2021): He would be in the top five if his short game was in order. 10. Jordan Spieth (Won in 2015): In the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2021 Masters, Spieth beat or tied 447 of 453 competitors (98.7%). He somehow has one green jacket. 6. Scottie Scheffler (T18 in 2021): It feels foolish to have the No. 1 player in the world this low, but Scheffler is not your normal No. 1 player in the world. 8. Dustin Johnson (Won in 2020): Over his last 50 rounds following the WGC-Dell Match Play, D.J.'s strokes gained tee to green numbers were below Adam Hadwin, C.T. Pan and Martin Laird. He played well at Austin Country Club, but a lot of that was due to a putter that's been smoking for a while now. Dumping his tee shot into the water on No. 16 last year as soon as he got within striking distance of Hideki Matsuyama was not encouraging, but it also seems statistically impossible to get into contention as much as he has (eight top-seven finishes in 18 majors) and not eventually win one.

Augusta will mark the first in a storybook summer for the 19-year-old, who will also be the first from his country ever to tee it up at the Open Championship at St. Andrews in July. This year will mark his second Masters start — he finished T36 in 2017, becoming the first Mid-Am entrant to make the cut at Augusta National. Jarvis, who plays collegiately for UNLV, won the Latin American Amateur Championship to earn an invite into the field at Augusta National. In doing so, he’ll be the first player from the Cayman Islands to tee it up in the event. Nakajima is something of a superstar in his native Japan, seen by many as the natural successor to Hideki Matsuyama atop the country’s golf mantel. This, of course, is thanks to its founder, Bobby Jones. Jones is the most famous amateur in golf history, a player who won seven majors without ever turning “pro.” Rather, Jones moonlighted in professional golf from his day job as an attorney. The club also hosts an annual amateur dinner on the night before the Masters begins, an idea that came at the suggestion of Jones himself.

Tiger Woods dazzles in his first competitive round in 17 months (Golf.com)

All eyes will be on Tiger Woods as he returns to the Masters on Thursday at Augusta National. Follow along as we track his first round here.

11:12: a.m.: Tiger lucks out when his drive ends up just short and right of the fairway bunker that guards the dogleg on 1. His attempt at a big cut ends up just short of the bunker in front of the green. He’ll have a great look at his first birdie of the day. Tiger goes first and nearly makes a hole-in-one, with his ball hopping once then stopping a two feet short of the cup. It lands just short of the green and check up instead of forward. And even more troubling: looks like he grabbed his back a bit on the follow-through. 1:34 p.m.: Tiger is in the pine straw but looks like he has an opening to the green. 2:39 p.m.: Tiger slings a nice 3-wood into the fairway on the 13th. 1:51 p.m.: Tiger has 178 to the hole. The hole is playing 155 yards today, and Tiger fires his 8-iron safely on the green. 3:25 p.m.: Tiger lays up to ~120 yards in the left gallery. Gets a free drop in the rough and advances the ball up toward the green.

Masters 2022 -- Tiger Woods does not look ready to play like an old ... (ESPN)

Tiger Woods is 46 years old. But he is aging champion, returning to the sport, not ready to exit the stage.

"Come on, leg," he muttered. He wore his pain on the outside for everyone to see. He grabbed his back after a swing. He tossed a tuft of grass into the air at Amen Corner and stared blankly down into the tunnel. You could understand they wanted to hear the inside, what Jack was thinking inside as he played the last nine holes." Then the three legends rolled into the interview room for a great big saccharine nostalgia tour -- a preview of what awaits Tiger Woods once he accepts that his days of competing for titles are finished. "You've got the record," Jack said. "I can hit it just fine," he said. Tiger isn't the only story in golf, but he is the only story that matters for everyone who isn't really into golf, if that makes sense. Tiger's future, a time when he no longer believes, lurked everywhere around him at Augusta. Early on Thursday morning, as he got worked on by his pit crew of therapists, three golf legends took the annual ceremonial first shots, officially starting the tournament. In the other, one of the most-watched men of his generation is engaged in combat with his own body. He's been the victim of his own violent swing, of his own bad decisions, of bad luck, but in the end, his legacy will be defined by how he has refused to be a victim at all.

Best, worst and what's next for Tiger Woods at the 2022 Masters (ESPN)

Tiger Woods had a lot of good moments, a few ones he'd like to forget and a lot of work ahead at the 86th Masters.

Despite the mistakes off the tee and around the green, Woods finds himself in contention at the Masters again. Woods' putt seemed to be on line the entire way, breaking from right to left to the hole. "Lack of concentration on the first one; second one, lack of commitment. He made a 10-footer to save par on the first hole and an 8-footer to save par on the ninth. On the next hole, his shot from 45 yards was 17 feet short. On the first hole, his wedge from 30 yards was 10 feet short. But Woods' first chip was short of the green and his second one ended up 9 feet above the hole. "I'll start with the disappointment: Just making bogey from 50 yards on the eighth," Woods said. He hit a 280-yard drive down the middle and then a nice 230-yard shot with a fairway wood, leaving him about 50 yards short of the pin. It was his 17th birdie on the sixth hole, most of any player at the Masters since 1996. The ball landed on the green, bounced once up the hill and stopped two feet short of the hole. "I know where to hit it [to] a lot of these pins, and I miss in the correct spots and give myself good angles," Woods said.

2022 Masters: Tiger Woods' unforgettable 71 in return to golf even ... (CBSSports.com)

Tiger clawed his way out of hospital bed and into early contention at Augusta National.

That's something I'm very lucky to have this opportunity to be able to play, and not only that, to play in the Masters and to have this type of reception. They've seen the pictures, and they've come over to the house and they've seen it," said Woods after his round. In showing up, he overcame a lot, but in doing so, he also chose the more difficult route. One straightforward par and one miraculous save later, and Woods pulled off a 71 that won't receive second glances in his eventual annals but still left your jaw on the floor if you witnessed it as it happened. His desire to perform and compete is double that of men half his age who haven't accomplished 10% as much. On the par-3 16th, he hit a handsome shot to the back right shelf that was better than it probably looked on ShotLink. As he strode to the 16th green, the patrons lining that hole stood one after the next -- as if doing the wave from tee to green -- to applaud him. He can make the cut and work his way into contention at this tournament. Three more pars to start that side before an easy birdie at No. 13 and a bogey on No. 14 that came as a result of a pulled drive. Not for the shot he had just hit but because they knew how preposterous it was that he was hitting shots at all just over a year removed from a hospital bed. After five consecutive pars to start his round, Tiger nearly stared an ace into the hole at No. 6 and moved to red numbers for the first time in in 100 weeks. On paper, it's a fine score at a great tournament that could lead to something even better later in the week. He went out and shot a 1-under 71 to beat the field average by three, of course.

Morikawa, meanwhile, seemed to find his best stuff late as he finished in a flurry with a 1-under 35 on the second nine. T10. Tiger Woods and eight others (-1): There was plenty of adventure in \ Woods' 1-under 71 Round 1, but playing in a competitive environment for the first time in 509 days, he looked plenty poised, prepared and healthy enough to give a good fight for the green jacket this weekend. He seemed to get better as the day wore on, too, and after bogeying the first two holes on Amen Corner, he played the final six holes at 2 under. T7. Patrick Cantlay, Corey Conners, Jason Kokrak (-2): Coming off consecutive top-10 Masters finishes, Conners played a neat 2-under 70 round with only one bogey -- at the par-4 seventh. 2. Cameron Smith (-4): The Australian native has had a huge season and picked up where he left off Thursday with an opening-round 68. T3. Joaquin Niemann, Dustin Johnson, Scottie Scheffler, Danny Willett (-3): This group is flush with star power past and present. Round 1 at the 2022 Masters began with treacherous weather and a brief delay, but Thursday as usual still managed to deliver the goods. His round was filled with highs and lows that included five birdies, two bogeys and one eagle to carry him to No. 1 on the leaderboard. One of more than a half-dozen golfers at 1-under 71 entering Friday, Woods had an impressive showing as he scrambled his way with success all over the course and consistently made big putts to salvage a solid round. Cameron Smith is one stroke off the lead, former champions Danny Willett and Dustin Johnson are in the hunt, and Niemann joins a group including Scottie Scheffler, Jason Kokrak, Corey Conners and Patrick Cantlay that make up the remainder of the top 10.

Masters 2022: Dustin Johnson laughs off almost getting knocked out ... (GolfDigest.com)

Dustin Johnson, after almost getting knocked out by an errant shot, turned in a three-under 69 on Day 1 at the 2022 Masters.

“Obviously, this golf course, even the holes—obviously you have chances on most of the holes … 13, you've got to hit it in the fairway, and it's not that easy of a second shot either. “No, I was thinking about the next shot I had to hit on 11,” Johnson said about his outlook after moving to four under. This drought included a missed cut in his green jacket defense last spring and another quick exit at the PGA Championship. There had been hope Johnson was on the verge of turning things around, tying the TPC Sawgrass record on the final day weather-wrecked Players, but nearing 38 years old it is totally reasonable to expect the player Johnson has been over the past 17 months is the player he had now become. “It’s fine.” He said it because it’s true and because, down to his bones, he could not care less who he tees it up against. Johnson hasn’t necessarily been bad over the last 17 months—he posted nine worldwide top-10s and became just the fifth player to go 5-0-0 at the Ryder Cup—but he hasn’t lived up to the generational status his performance over the past decade has earned. But Dustin Johnson is a different cat, so instead of dropping expletives or wondering who called in the urethane strike from the 11th fairway to the 12th tee—Jon Rahm being the guilty party—DJ merely looked at the ball, then at his caddie, then back at the ball and laughed.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — For the second straight year the Masters' Honorary Starters ceremony created a discussion beyond simply the opening tee shots.

Player was named an ambassador of Saudi Golf in April 2021. In 2021, Lee Elder was recognized on the first tee for breaking the tournament’s color barrier in 1975. Companies attaching themselves to Honorary Starters is not new; fellow starters Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson were adorned with plenty of advertisers.

Lynch: Masters Honorary Starter Gary Player has done everything in ... (usatoday.com)

A decade in a strictly ceremonial role has not dampened Player's love of the game, of competing — and of telling folks about it.

He rose from the podium and made for the clubhouse to meet and greet, a man in full, clad in a green jacket he had earned. “And to have another Grand Slam winner I think would be just a big shot in the arm for golf around the world.” “I’d like to see Rory McIlroy win because I think he is basically the most talented player I’ve seen in ages,” he said earnestly. “If I may boast for a minute,” he said, with no discernible irony, “I’ve beaten my age over 2,000 times in a row. That Player is well-traveled is hardly in dispute, and he is admirably quick with compliments for the nations he has visited. He confessed to being upset after a recent round when he narrowly failed to beat his age by a staggering 18 shots. The titanic threesome on the dais at Augusta National all said they knew when it was time to stop competing. “I was still scoring pretty well, and I just said, ‘No, that’s it. To his immediate right sat Jack Nicklaus, the winner of six green jackets and a ceremonial figure since 2010. “It’s a wonderful memory to me,” he said. Today, it was the turn of India. “I love India, the intelligence, the technology, the manners, the so humble—the women dress so nicely. Roberto De Vicenzo returned the trophy in ’68 without having had his name engraved, while Player brought it back in ’69 with his name chiseled in lettering considerably larger than any winner before (or since).

7:40 a.m.: It is a chilly morning in Augusta. Two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Stewart Hagestad and 1988 Masters champion Sandy Lyle start things up at 8 a.m., and it was frigid for their warm-ups on the range. And the scoring average was 73.83 on Day 1, plenty tough for Thursday. 8:47 a.m.: We are now almost an hour into play, and we're still waiting for a birdie in the second round. That's how you score well at Augusta National, and the Canadian—with two top 10s the past few years—is keeping up his great play so far. Here are the pin positions for Friday's second round. 9:49 a.m.: Our Day 1 leader has dropped a shot early on Friday. Sungjae Im moves back to 4-under with an unforced error at the opening hole. Christiaan Bezuidenhout bogeyed No. 1 but then birdied the second hole to put a red number on the board ... about an hour into the morning tee times. Just ahead of him at the par-5 second, Harold Varner III makes birdie to get to two under. That would include Tiger Woods, who did not disappoint on Thursday. As he often does at Augusta National, he captivated the patrons at Augusta National with a gritty 1-under 71 to put him just four back of Sungjae Im’s lead. Still, he's in red figures at one under, just four off the lead. That’s why Friday is so essential—make the cut (top 50 and ties) and you’ll very well have a chance with this possible weather. Back at No. 1, Dustin Johnson gets his second round underway with a par.

Rory McIlroy Was Once the Next Tiger Woods. So, What Is He Now? (Sports Illustrated)

In many ways, McIlroy has proved to be nothing like the guy he was supposed to succeed. That's what makes him interesting.

Now he’s taking the opposite tack: He says he has committed to hitting more irons and fairway woods off the tee, throttling back to prioritize accuracy, like Tiger did at Hoylake in ’06. He has tried to convince himself, and us, that he is O.K. with his golf life, and it clearly hasn’t worked for either party. In two years he went from wondering whether he would ever tee it up again to winning the Masters. About a year ago he was asking doctors whether his leg might need to be amputated. The most interesting thing about McIlroy right now is the extent to which he isn’t Tiger. Despite all the similarities—the big drives and the early successes and the working-class childhood—he’s ended up in the one place Tiger never was: competitive purgatory. His driver started spraying, he found himself in the desert, in the bushes, in the water. He’s known to be generous with his time, openly confronting everything from geopolitics to the ins and outs of his game. Rory is not a big man; he’s listed at 5'9". But when he has the big stick in his hands there is a whiff of the supernatural in the air. At the Masters, he was most recently in serious contention in 2018, when he was in the final group on Sunday, three strokes behind Patrick Reed. But he never really made a run, wilting to fifth with a 74. He hasn’t gone through any meaningful slumps, like the one that saw Speith plummet to No. 92 or the one that dropped Fowler out of the top 100 and may keep him there the rest of his life. About our attempts to take the Jordanesque model that Tiger refined and square it with the trajectory of The Next Tiger’s real-life career. At the Masters the next year, McIlroy shot a blazing 65 in the first round, and entering that Sunday he was four shots clear of the field. He didn’t feel the way he thought he would feel.

Friday is expected to be relatively chilly in the morning, with temperatures in the 50s, rising to a peak of 65 degrees in the early afternoon. By noon, wind gusts of 17 mph are expected to blow, and gusts of 22 mph could be whipping through the Augusta pines in the early evening. That’s tough to argue when past champions are populating the leaderboard, and there are several of them lurking after Thursday’s first round. The story of the day? All in all, things are looking good for the Big Cat — and we can’t wait to see what’s in store on Friday. His one-under 71 included three birdies and two bogeys — one of which came on the par-5 8th, a hole he’s dominated in years past.
