According to Redmayne, the newest Fantastic Beasts film is "like Ocean's Eleven, set in a Wizarding World." By Andrea Towers April 07, 2022 at 01:03 PM EDT.

The Secrets of Dumbledore finds Redmayne's Magizoologist Newt Scamander on a mission to stop dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald ( Mads Mikkelsen)'s plans to take control of the wizarding world. "It's like Ocean's Eleven, set in a Wizarding World," Redmayne explained. You might not think of Fantastic Beasts as being a heist film, but its star, Eddie Redmayne, thinks otherwise.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, review: Can Jude Law ... (iNews)

Erring closer to the mythology of Harry Potter makes this the best entry in the Fantastic Beasts franchise yet.

The promise of the title is delivered by a key rare beast, sort of a “deus ex Bambi”, which requires Newt’s skills as a magi-zoologist. With a wizarding election looming and Grindelwald’s power growing, there is an urgency here that the previous films lacked. This third instalment, in an attempt to right the ship, has retreated closer to Potter, replacing one actor, putting Jude Law’s young Dumbledore front and centre, and sidelining the putative lead Newt Scamander ( Eddie Redmayne).

Kirsten Acuna of Insider was also quick to praise the Danish star, writing: "Mikkelsen slips into the role of Grindelwald so naturally that it's easy to forget Depp had ever played the role", while The Telegraph claimed that the character actor should have been cast "from the start". In their review of the film, USA Today lavished praise on the Danish actor, writing: “Mikkelsen provides the Voldemort-level evil personality the Beasts movies have been lacking. Reviews for the new instalment have been fairly positive in tone overall, with Mikkelsen's performance as Grindelwald the one element coming in for near universal praise from critics.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore review – Mads ... (Independent.ie)

To summarise: the first Fantastic Beasts film was based on an idea by J.K. Rowling and set in 1920s New York, where eccentric zoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie ...

Julija (Gracija Filipovic) is a handsome, clever teenager who spends most of her time swimming and diving in the crystal waters beside her Dalmatian home. In the first film, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, a clever balance was struck between action, magic and storytelling, with the budding romance between the Muggle Kowalski and Queenie the witch providing a vital injection of warmth and humour. That war spills into Leonard’s shop when Roy’s son Richie (Dylan O’Brien) is brought in by fellow gangster Francis (Johnny Flynn) with a gunshot wound and during an eventful night, Leonard and his secretary Mable Shaun (Zoey Deutch) are dragged into the chaos. Newt has it and brings it to Germany: a game of cat and mouse ensues. I know he’s supposed to be shy and introverted, but Redmayne’s Scamander is such a drip that he hardly amounts to a protagonist. He’s in the right place and time (the 1930s): curiously, though, no actual Nazis appear in this production and a magical version of fascism is only hinted at.

'Fantastic Beasts: Secrets Of Dumbledore' Review: Third Time Not ... (Forbes)

This third chapter in an allegedly five-part film franchise is paced for the binge and spends its 142 minutes running in place and waiting out the clock.

Yes, the finale offers a fun bit of magical three-card Monte, although ends on a weirdly inconclusive note that either feels like the end of the series or a full-on retcon back to the status quo at the end of the first film (that’s especially true if the troubled Ezra Miller is written out since Credence seemingly died at the end of Where to Find Them). The first two-thirds are stilted, drawn-out, narratively indifferent and above all incredibly boring. The epilogue also emphasizes that one key appeal of the Harry Potter series was that it featured cheerful kids who wanted to be “there” (Hogwarts) instead of reluctant adult heroes torn between duty and happiness. Set a few months after the events of The Crimes of Grindelwald (and just over a year after Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), things get off to a bumpy start from the get-go. The first Fantastic Beasts presented a major character (Miller’s tragic Credence) who became a murderous villain precisely because he wasn’t loved and accepted for who or what he was. Up until the end, most of this 142-minute picture divides its time between tidying up the mess made by the last movie while cryptically hinting at Grindelwald’s devious plot (to be elected as Supreme Head of the Wizarding World) and explicitly stating his genocidal intentions. In the same way the “make Finn a Jedi!” crowd was missing the point amid the newest Star Wars trilogy, I hope J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves resist the urge to eventually give Jacob magical abilities.

Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches, and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. That’s a fair chunk of change to take into account when analysing this international opening. Whether that’s pandemic related, down to off-screen caveats associated with creator of this world, or simply because The Crimes of Grindelwald just wasn’t that good, the opening of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore is an intriguing one, and one which experts have earmarked for a franchise low $50M+.

And the cast, less trapped in a fug of half-formed symbolism and subplots, are allowed realer and more romantic stakes. Dumbledore feels like an improvement, at least, on the joyless, enervating slog of 2018's Crimes of Grindelwald; it's nimbler and sweeter and more cohesive in its storyline. — opulent CG set pieces, and stray bits of flair, mostly in the form of its slithering, glimmering creatures.

Stephanie Bunbury of Deadline seems to appreciate Mads Mikkelsen’s “malevolent but charismatic” take, but thinks perhaps Johnny Depp’s approach — played “with extravagant menace, so that every word he uttered seemed to come from the bowels of the Earth” — was more appropriate for this particular series: Johnny Depp holds an important place in the Wizarding World, as his portrayal of Gellert Grindelwald established the character as a true villain in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. That critic isn’t the only one blaming any negative opinions about the new Grindelwald on the production, rather than the actor.

It isn’t a bad film, fans of the franchise will definitely make a beeline for it, but it isn’t great enough to make you look forward to another sequel. As a result, the film is not only too long but also gets weary and tiring before the onset of its otherwise spectacular climax. The third in the Fantastic Beasts series has the name of the most famous wizard in the world.
