Tottenham Hotspur vs. Newcastle United - English Premier League ... (mlive.com)

Two clubs on opposite ends of the EPL standings meet in the marquee match on Sunday in North London.

(AP Photo/Jon Super)APIn the English Premier League, a good chunk to clubs are trying to move their way up into the top-four with just a couple months left in the season, while another bunch are trying to avoid relegation and stay in the top division. On Sunday, a pair of such teams do battle in North London, as Tottenham Hotspur hosts Newcastle United. After a rather mediocre start to the season, the Spurs are right in the thick of the race for the top-four of the tables, the four spots that qualify clubs for next season’s UEFA Champions League. Coming into the weekend, Tottenham is just three points back of fourth-place Arsenal, and eight behind third-place Chelsea. Tottenham went 3-1 last month, with a 3-2 loss to Manchester United the lone mark on their record, and have won five of their last seven matches.Further down the standings sits Newcastle United. While the Magpies are not quite on the edge of relegation as they might have been earlier this season, their 14th-place standing might be a little too close for comfort for some supporters. Coming into April, they are nine points of Watford, who sit in the first relegation spot in the EPL. Despite going on a nine-match unbeaten streak that carried from January into March. losses in back-to-back contests have made things a little uneasy for Newcastle. The first time these two squads met back in mid-October, Newcastle battled hard, but it was the Spurs who came away victorious in a 3-2 decision at St. James’ Park.Check out the Premier League tables and results here Newcastle United - English Premier League (4/3/22) MichiganChevron that denotes content that can open up. Wolverhampton’s modest success is due in large part to a stingy defense that has the fourth-best defensive record in the Premier League this season. In addition to their home form, the Eagles have also showed a penchant for being giant-killers. Arsenal have been playing strong stuff since the holidays, but Palace won’t be a straight-forward fixture for the Gunners and the Eagles have already shown to be a banana skin for plenty of the big fish in the Premier League this season.

This season, it has scored 34 goals on 39.5 expected and a good chunk of that discrepancy has come at home. The duality with this play exciting me is that United’s attack has played very well at home while Leicester has struggled to defend on the road. Further, it hasn’t held a top-half opponent to fewer than two goals away from home this season. Given it notched 2.3 xG in the reverse fixture against Leeds, expect another strong performance from the Saints. Goals should come quite easily for the Peacocks, especially considering how bad Southampton’s defense has played away from home. As a result, I’m expecting goals in this fixture.

Jonjo Shelvey and Fabian Schar return to the Newcastle squad, but there's no place in the starting XI for Bruno Guimaraes after a tiring international break. Bentancur has time on his left, edge of the area, it deflects high for a corner. Allan Saint-Maximin involved already, having won a free kick on the left that came to nothing. Saint-Maximin is back in the action and the ball comes to him straight away. It could feel chilly by the time kick off comes around. Another period of Spurs pressure sees a Kane shot hooked wide of the post inside a crowded penalty area. 15th min: It's very much one way traffic, with Spurs seeing the lion's share of possession so far. Schar stands of the ball and powers it through the wall. It's scrappy in the Spurs box as they don't get it away and Willock looks to have wriggled through on goal briefly, but Romero is across to block the midfielder's shot. Kane manages to hold it up and Spurs get going. Two away losses in quick succession are an ominous sign ahead of their trip to London, now sitting nine points above the drop. This time Emerson Royal came inside, and Kulusevski is given space to cross.

Ten minutes into the second half and on came Rashford, off went McTominay, and United had a natural spearhead but, now, United undid themselves. If the Frenchman can often bemuse, there was only clarity regarding Maguire and the support offered the beleaguered defender from the United fans, after he endured boos on England duty. “We knew this morning Cristiano could not play and decided to start Paul Pogba,” said the interim manager. Rangnick wanted the last two and a half weeks since United’s previous action – being dumped out of the Champions League by Atlético Madrid - to be a “reset” for the term’s final nine games. In the end we are not happy with the result but the second half was OK.” The second half was better, we were struggling to find rhythm in the first half, possibly because of the international break.

Super City win at Burnley to return to Premier League summit (Manchester City FC)

Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League table after a brief hiatus with a 2-0 victory at Burnley.

23 - Man City are the only side yet to drop a single point from a winning position in the Premier League this season, winning all 23 games in which they’ve led. The home side set up with a 4-5-1 formation in a bid to frustrate us. It's a busy week - first we'll think about Atletico Madrid and then after that we’ll think about Liverpool." "The goal after five minutes was important but we still had to play 85 more. The pitch was difficult because the grass was so high but we adapted. This is why we’ve fought for the last 10, 11 months. Our second was equally as impressive and Sterling was again the architect. The win means City go back to the top of the Premier League table after a brief period in second. City were playing with a swagger, enjoying long periods of keep-ball. In the 2nd half they pushed more, they went 4-4-2 and they were more aggressive. Burnley were struggling to cope. No side has ever gone through an entire Premier League campaign without dropping points when ahead before.

Two goalscoring midfielders saw Manchester City reclaim their place at the summit of the Premier League table with a comfortable victory at Turf Moor.

Electric in the first half, assisting the first goal with a clever cutback and picking out Gundogan brilliantly for the second after making a good run to get into space. Had very, very little to do and couldn't be held accountable for the offside Burnley goal. Kevin De Bruyne struck sweetly into the top corner after just five minutes to give Pep Guardiola's side the lead, after which the result never really felt in jeopardy.

Liverpool take on Watford as Jurgen Klopp's side look to go top of the Premier League. A victory would see Liverpool move two points ahead of Manchester ...

Will Jurgen Klopp's side go top of the table or will Watford spring a surprise? Jurgen Klopp's side ran out 5-0 winners when these sides met at Vicarage Road earlier in the season, but they won't be taking anything for granted as It looks as if Gomez will be at right-back today as Alexander-Arnold is only on the bench. Watford have made it difficult for Jurgen Klopp's team at times, but as things stand Liverpool will be going top of the league. Watford then create a chance themselves, with the ball falling to Sarr, whose effort goes over. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones all start as Liverpool make four changes from their last Premier League game. Liverpool certainly have had things their own way and Kamara is working hard as he looks to stop Salah from making a major impact. Following the subsequent corner Cucho Hernandez requires treatment following a clash of heads. It's expected that Salah will be replaced soon, with Sadio Mane poised to enter the fray. Watford then miss an excellent chance, with Sarr playing in Joao Pedro, who drags his effort wide. 65 mins: Fabinho plays a neat pass in towards Salah, whose effort goes just over. 82 mins: Jurgen Klopp looks a little concerned, with victory still not secure for his side.

Four of Brentford’s final seven matches score only two in the FDR, giving their budget-friendly players the chance to reward managers over the run-in. Ivan Toney (£6.7m) has been their top performer in that run, his assist on Saturday taking his tally to 36 points in the last four Gameweeks. Five of their final eight matches score only two in the FDR, with De Bruyne shaping up to be a major player for Fantasy managers in the next few Gameweeks. Tottenham broke into the top four with a 5-1 victory over Newcastle and are finding form at the right time to secure a Champions League spot. The crunch contest comes with the Toffees four points above the Clarets having both played 28 games. City completed a routine 2-0 win at Turf Moor and will head into the Etihad Stadium clash one point ahead of Liverpool with eight games left.

Christian Eriksen could be missing link in Tottenham's revived attack (The Guardian)

While Harry Kane and Son Heung-min impressed against Newcastle, they could do with Eriksen's guile in midfield.

One searing half-volley from Kane was destined for the top corner until it struck the unfortunate Emerson clean in the face. Harry Kane has also been forced to adapt his game since Eriksen’s departure and it was his combination with Kulusevski which provided the spark for Son’s game-changing goal. “To come back here would be a good opportunity for him, for me, for the club, but now he’s signed for Brentford, only six months, and we’ll see what happens,” he said. It is a little more than two years since he left north London, having joined in 2013 as part of the splurge on players following Gareth Bale’s world record transfer to Real Madrid but at times this season that must have felt like a lifetime for Spurs fans. When Son dragged an effort wide of the target seconds after Emerson Royal had made it 4-1 to the hosts with more than 25 minutes to play, it was hard to believe that this was the same team that had struggled to create meaningful chances before falling behind so meekly. At that stage it seemed obvious that, despite the promptings of the elegant Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, Tottenham were in desperate need of a player who is capable of opening up organised defences.

Manchester United were held 1-1 by Leicester City after another disjoined display. Aaron Cresswell's well-executed free-kick put West Ham ahead in the 32nd minute, and although Mason Holgate leveled the scores in the 53rd minute, Jarrod Bowen celebrated his return to fitness with the winning goal five minutes later. Brentford then ran riot with Christian Eriksen putting them ahead in the 54th minute, before Janelt's second made it 3-1 on the hour and Yoane Wissa added a fourth with three minutes left to play.

Lampard didn’t appear to acknowledge Keane as the player trudged off the field. Aaron Cresswell gave West Ham the lead with a curling free-kick into the top corner in the 32nd, only for Mason Holgate to equalize in the 53rd with a deflected shot.

This weekend's Premier League action has left Arsenal, Manchester United, West Ham and Spurs separated by just three points in the race for the Champions ...

The real ace up the Hammers’ sleeve though is the fixture list: their run-in includes games against Brentford, Burnley, Norwich and Brighton, all of which will be viewed as eminently winnable. Spurs, Arsenal and Man United all have games in hand on the Hammers – but it would be unwise to write them off. This clash with United comes three days after a visit to third-placed Chelsea and is a fixture which has, in recent seasons, had little of the competitive significance of these two sides’ mid-2000s glory days. Brighton (A) – Sat 7 May, 3pm Liverpool (A) – Sat 7 May, 3pm The pair are tied on points and their goal difference is in Spurs’ favour by only two, though Arsenal do have two games in hand.

(Reuters) – Everton manager Frank Lampard said his side have the quality to remain in the Premier League but after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham United left them three points above the relegation zone he says they must now start to show it. “We have to show more quality – and there is that in this group – to stay up,” Lampard told reporters.

10 things we learned in the Premier League – Matchweek 30 (NBC Sports)

What did we learn during Matchweek 30 of the 2021-22 Premier League season (which still has a Monday meeting of Crystal Palace and Arsenal on its docket)?

If he isn’t, the Foxes may have to make the unpopular decision to cash-in on a man who may not be long for the King Power Stadium regardless (NM). But even a minor upgrade on Maupay or a real center forward for him to run off of likely has the Seagulls in the top seven conversation (NM). 5. VAR saves Man Utd (twice?) — (Man Utd 1-1 Leicester) –  It was 1-1 when Kelechi Iheanacho and Raphael Varane were allowed to let play despite fouls on each other after the Nigerian striker got the ball stuck in his feet late in the game, leading to a James Maddison goal. 9. Inconsistency holding Aston Villa back (Wolves 2-1 Aston Villa) – Player by player, there’s a strong case to be made that Aston Villa have the second-most talented squad (Leicester) in the mid-table battle. Kalvin Phillips came on just after Southampton made it 1-1 and were dominating the game, but he settled things down, dropped into defense to get on the ball and he brought calm to the usual Leeds chaos. That is what they’ve missed so badly this season (plus Patrick Bamford’s goals, of course) and Phillips showed his class as he looks to get back to his best and be fully fit for the last six weeks of the campaign (JPW). When they come out flat, they hardly look like they belong in the Premier League. Three straight wins last month saw them score nine goals while conceding zero. 6. Negative Everton has zero momentum (West Ham 2-1 Everton) –  Frank Lampard was forced into a late change as Donny van de Beek was injured in the warm-up and Mason Holgate replaced him. Tottenham is too good with this manager and the additions of Cristian Romero, Rodrigo Betancur, and Dejan Kulusevski joining a back-to-their-best Heung-min Son and Harry Kane in making this team capable of a Champions League return (NM). 4. Chelsea can’t cope with Brentford press as Tuchel makes rare error (Chelsea 1-4 Brentford) – Thomas Tuchel revealed before the game that he selected Ruben Loftus-Cheek instead of Jorginho because he anticipated a rough and tumble battle with the “physical” Bees. That decision proved a disastrous one for much of the first half, as Chelsea were frequently unable to pass out of their own end after Edouard Mendy took a short goal kick. 7. Brighton’s solid buys request a finisher, please (Brighton 0-0 Norwich) – From Marc Cucurella — who was fantastic at left back — to Leandro Trossard — who was busy doing an Eden Hazard in his prime impression on Saturday, the Seagulls have purchased so many players perfect for Graham Potter’s system (and if they were already there when Potter was hired, credit the Seagulls for selecting that boss). But Brighton’s misses in front of goal have been well-documented and will be further magnified by Neal Maupay’s penalty sent well over the bar. Anytime you’re under pressure and in trouble, just look for Jorginho. He’ll create a pocket of space to receive the ball and, somehow, turn out of the same danger you couldn’t handle, and all is typically well.

Premier League: Arsenal's era-defining fixtures, a Liverpool transfer ... (iNews)

Daniel Storey gives his verdict on all 20 Premier League teams after big wins for Aston Villa, Brentford, Newcastle and Man City.

But it was how the wing-backs performed in that system that was the key. And would Spurs have a firm grip on a top-four spot if they had bought Rodrigo Bentancur and Kulusevski in the first week of January rather than the last? But the general rule is monotony, a team that is neither creative in attack nor hambolic in defence partaking in games that are decided by two or three moments for better and worse. Sterling has become a goalscorer more than a creator but he still set up both of City’s goals on Saturday and looks to have kicked on again after a difficult first half of the season. Marsch was complimentary of his players after the Southampton draw (this is pretty much his default position, in fairness): “I feel like the clarity of tactically what we want the game to look like was there, I thought we were balanced in the match and didn’t give much away. And that’s a pattern for Palace. They are one of only two teams in the Premier League (with Newcastle) not to win a single point through goals coming after the 75th minute. Those conversations happen routinely in the privacy of the changing room, but when they are aired in public it becomes a story. Leeds only have seven games left and they need to build up a buffer in case Burnley pick up some momentum in the final weeks of the season. In the reverse fixture this season, Arsenal scored in the 90th minute to salvage a point. Sean Dyche was very quick to point out the quality gap between Burnley and Manchester City, and he’s absolutely right that it is a daunting task, but he must still have been frustrated at failing to keep it tight for the opening 10 minutes. He misses chances – the failure to even move towards goal with his one-one-one indicates a striker dismally short of confidence – and he isn’t even really connecting with Havertz as much any more. But it is the general theme of penalty-box wastage that is really killing the buzz on what is now a decent season rather than a good one.

Alisson among the Premier League winners and losers (Football365.com)

Alisson kept Liverpool in the title race on Saturday but the result of the weekend belongs to Brentford. The biggest losers were Chelsea.

They looked ragged towards the end at Tottenham, offering a throwback to the early months of the season and an unwanted antidote to their recent organisation and obduracy. But the other damning element is that his wild lunge at James Maddison stemmed from a poor touch and United’s next manager may want a technically better player at the heart of his midfield. What started off as a minor dip, almost a logical antidote to achievement, could become the worst run of the season for anyone. Except when he didn’t on Saturday. Burnley tend to be outnumbered in the centre of the pitch by many opponents. There is a case for suggesting the title race is between the team who are the best between the penalty boxes and the side who are best in them. His striker-free system further reflected Marcus Rashford’s fall from grace, with Paul Pogba preferred in attack; the best that can be said for Rashford, given Rangnick’s lack of faith in him, is that at least United will have a different manager next season. He was only trusted to play 34 minutes of Premier League football before January. And but for Jimenez’s sending-off against Leeds, Silva would probably have been on the bench against Aston Villa on Saturday. Instead, he was rampant, running Tyrone Mings ragged and helping Wolves produce one of their most dynamic displays of the season. Maddison can have a cockiness, but perhaps that allows him to go to Old Trafford imbued with his belief in his ability. Perhaps it was a cunning way of luring Real Madrid into a false sense of security, though even losing 4-1 at home to Brentford may not convince a wily old fox like Carlo Ancelotti that Chelsea are no-hopers. Brentford were almost certainly staying up anyway but perhaps the win that booked them a second successive season in the Premier League was arguably the result of the Premier League campaign. Perhaps more surprising was the skill and then the cross that brought Emerson’s close-range finish but Doherty seems to have understood Conte’s demands from his wing-backs. His goal in the 5-1 demolition of against Newcastle showcased one of his greatest attributes: the ability to get into the box so that, when Kane’s cross reached the far post, he could react with a diving header.

Premier League wrap: Spurs move into top four, Everton stare at risk ... (Scroll.in)

While Tottenham are firmly in the race to qualify for next season's Champions League, West Ham's 2-1 victory pushed Everton deeper into relegation trouble.

I asked my players today to start in the same way we left. I said it was a pity we had to stop. We have to continue to play this way with intensity,” Conte said. I was happy before the international break. “It’s very difficult to be in the race for the Champions League. We want to stay there until the end. Regardless of that result, Tottenham are firmly in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League, despite Conte’s claim that it would be a miracle to finish in the top four.
