It's simply part and parcel of the game and the process of development. In his debut campaign for Liverpool during the 2012/13, even Raheem Sterling was at times devoted to the club's reserve side on a couple of occasions against Manchester United and West Ham United, as he struggled to get into Liverpool's first team during the second part of the season. His appearance for the club's U23 side had a clear purpose, and it's not one Liverpool fans should worry about. His intense pressing led to Liverpool's opening goal of the game, as he dispossessed his opponent and set up James Norris to score. Speculation was rife about his whereabouts and the reasons for his omission. They also have to play in order to develop, and for Elliott playing time is even more crucial as he looks to get back into the rhythm of things following his lengthy lay-off. On the pitch, Elliott showed his hunger and determination. Later on in the half, Elliott could have found the back of the net himself, though he was denied by a crossbar. When Elliott was omitted from the matchday squad, many on social media were flabbergasted by his absence in the team. Fight and prove your worth, and a chance remains to climb up the pecking order.

Liverpool take on Watford as Jurgen Klopp's side look to go top of the Premier League. A victory would see Liverpool move two points ahead of Manchester ...

Will Jurgen Klopp's side go top of the table or will Watford spring a surprise? Jurgen Klopp's side ran out 5-0 winners when these sides met at Vicarage Road earlier in the season, but they won't be taking anything for granted as It looks as if Gomez will be at right-back today as Alexander-Arnold is only on the bench. Watford have made it difficult for Jurgen Klopp's team at times, but as things stand Liverpool will be going top of the league. Watford then create a chance themselves, with the ball falling to Sarr, whose effort goes over. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones all start as Liverpool make four changes from their last Premier League game. Liverpool certainly have had things their own way and Kamara is working hard as he looks to stop Salah from making a major impact. Following the subsequent corner Cucho Hernandez requires treatment following a clash of heads. It's expected that Salah will be replaced soon, with Sadio Mane poised to enter the fray. Watford then miss an excellent chance, with Sarr playing in Joao Pedro, who drags his effort wide. 65 mins: Fabinho plays a neat pass in towards Salah, whose effort goes just over. 82 mins: Jurgen Klopp looks a little concerned, with victory still not secure for his side.

Diogo Jota helps see off Watford as Liverpool make it 10 in a row (The Guardian)

Goals from Diogo Jota and Fabinho saw Liverpool beat Watford 2-0 for a 10th successive Premier League win.

Substitute Fabinho swept the penalty into the top corner and Liverpool into pole position. The visitors possessed a clear threat too, on the break and from set pieces, and performed with a composure that belied their lowly league position. Jota, keeping his eye on the ball and not on the keeper soaring towards him, bravely flicked home his 20th goal in all competitions this season. Cucho Hernández had another decent chance for Watford when connecting with Imran Louza’s corner to the near post. Their three clean sheets in the league this season have all come on Roy Hodgson’s watch and, with trusted assistant Ray Lewington alongside him, the former Liverpool manager oversaw a typically well-drilled defensive display from his team. Jürgen Klopp’s team were far from their fluid, dominant best against relegation-threatened Watford but that was an irrelevance alongside a 10th successive league win that took Liverpool top before Manchester City’s visit to Burnley.

Kucka is caught on the ball by Fabinho in the middle of the park and Liverpool come forward with three men. Hernandez becomes the first Watford player to get booked after a tussle with Gomez. It's a massive chance missed for the visitors. Fabinho floats the ball into the box and it's met by the head of Salah, who loops onto the roof of the net. Jordan Henderson delivered a corner into the box and Jota was wrestled to the ground by Kucka. Substitute Fabinho stepped up and found the top corner. Liverpool can rely on Diogo Jota as Mo Salah struggles to get over ... (ESPN)

LIVERPOOL, England -- Mohamed Salah played like a man who had just missed out on World Cup qualification as Liverpool made it 10 successive Premier League ...

But if Salah is unable to rediscover his form and sharpness in the weeks ahead, Liverpool at least know that Jota is ready, willing and able to fill the void -- a point he made with his headed goal. But while Salah deals with the angst of missing out on AFCON glory and World Cup qualification, Liverpool can rely on Jota. And that's why they are now one step closer to an unprecedented quadruple. The Portugal international scored both in a 2-0 win against Leicester and has also netted the crucial openers in wins against Arsenal, Nottingham Forest (in the FA Cup) and in this game against Watford. To suffer a similar heavy blow so soon afterward -- one that may have denied Salah his final chance to play at the World Cup after his Russia 2018 campaign was marred by the aftereffects of a shoulder injury -- will undoubtedly weigh heavily on Salah, and it was evident against Watford that the forward was nowhere near his best form. But he has also lost his edge in Liverpool's big games, with his goals since returning from AFCON duty coming against Leeds, Norwich, Brighton and one against Inter Milan. Every player has off days, even supreme talents like Salah, but with Liverpool still chasing a quadruple this season, they need their talisman to shake off his World Cup hangover quickly.

Liverpool can count on vociferous away support, and it does not take much to imagine a nervy atmosphere descending on the Etihad. Every successful pressure or breaching of the back line will plant a seed of doubt among the Man City players and crowd, one that has the potential to grow into a strangling weed. An open game leaves more scope for that: by needlessly turning this game into a must-win, Manchester City are setting themselves up for a slugfest, and Liverpool are the league’s top scorers. In fairness, Guardiola came out on top in a similarly crucial league game the following year, but it is often forgotten that the high-quality 2-1 win happened in January. It has only been ascribed so much significance in retrospect because both teams were so flawless in the run-in. In recent meetings between the sides, the mutual respect has been clear, and the reality that a draw would probably be a decent result has always been looming in the background. Liverpool need to adjust their perspective a little this time, knowing that only a win will put them in the ascendency, but Manchester City could theoretically play things slightly safer. Playing for a draw can be a terrible mistake: going all the way back to 1989, Liverpool’s knowledge that even a one-goal defeat against Arsenal would win them the league absolutely ruined their performance. And before the season is out, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Portugal international claim another header or two. And his goal against Watford was evidence of this, as he got in front of Christian Kabasele and Kiko to plant Gomez’s cross past Foster. Jota has had a very good season for Liverpool, and the £45m the club paid for him seems like a bargain in hindsight. Many of the headers he’s scored this season are a result of Jota anticipating where the cross is going to go and getting there ahead of his marker. The Portuguese forward met Joe Gomez’s teasing cross to head the ball past Watford stopper Ben Foster to give Liverpool the opener and put them on their way to all three points at the start of what is sure to be a monumental next four weeks for the club.

Add in a few quality subs in key moments, and this Liverpool team seems both extremely predictable (see below), and extremely difficult to stop. He’ll be made up that his side didn’t get tonked, and he’ll get on with the more pressing matter of keeping Watford up. Since the draw away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are deadly serious, and simply do not appear to be in the business of dropping points these days. Gomez and Jota connecting for the opener seemed to come out of nowhere, and seemed like a gut punch after Alisson’s 1-v-1 save just a moment earlier (yes, it was offside, but felt like a much bigger momentum swing in real time). Liverpool’s defense bent but didn’t break, and kept a fifth consecutive clean sheet. The rest over the international break seems to have done Bobby a world of good.

Diogo Jota gives Liverpool huge transfer boost as Jürgen Klopp has ... (Liverpool.com)

The Good, Bad and Ugly: Liverpool battled past a stubborn Watford side to briefly claim top spot, with Diogo Jota scoring a key goal for Jürgen Klopp.

Ben Foster was a little off his line — shockingly, he was not expecting an awkward half-volley from all of 30 yards, with the striker’s body shape all wrong. The upshot is that he has scored two non-penalty goals in his last 11 Liverpool outings, a remarkable slowing-down compared to his best-in-the-world early season form. Indeed, Fabinho is strengthening his case to be the main taker with every penalty kick he converts. His goal summed up the benefits of having him on the left. He has been making waves through the middle, but he proved he can be equally effective from a wide base. Joe Gomez was superb as a Trent Alexander-Arnold understudy, while Fabinho injected calmness (and an excellent penalty) upon his introduction to proceedings.

Kevin de Bruyne blasted the ball past Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope in the 5th minute and Ilkay Gündogan got the second goal 20 minutes later.

Considering Divock Origi is set to depart the club, FSG and newly-appointed sporting director Julian Ward will have a void to fill in the squad. Based on those numbers, he would be an enticing option at Anfield. The £25m price tag, even with the £2.5m discount, would feel a little steep — but mistakes have been rare under Klopp, so Liverpool may be prepared to take the hit. Not only that, but he is also clinical, with only Patrik Schick and Erling Haaland enjoying a better goal conversion percentage than Awoniyi's 25 percent in the Bundesliga this season. His playing style is tailor-made for Klopp's gegenpress but Awoniyi is also a player who would be capable of bringing a new dimension to Liverpool in the same vein as Origi due to his aerial threat in the box. Looking back, Awoniyi has enjoyed a spectacular campaign which has seen him hit 17 goals and register four assists in 36 games for Union Berlin. Blessed with enviable physique, pace and an extremely voracious appetite for the ball, Awoniyi's explosive style and strong work-ethic make him an ideal player for Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool. At 24 years of age, Awoniyi is still relatively young, and based on his current form, he is definitely ready to make the next step following his venture in Germany. And according to Goal.com, Premier League clubs are sniffing about for his services, including West Ham United, Southampton and Newcastle United, who are all believed to be interested in the forward. The report states that Union Berlin value him at roughly £25m, which is a steep increase from the fee the club paid to Liverpool. However, Liverpool have negotiated a 10 per cent sell on clause, which means Liverpool could gain £2.5m from any potential deal.

For Mané, the make-up of their group means that the forward could be on the first plane home after the group stages, which of course would be highly beneficial for Liverpool. The same can’t be said for Van Dijk and The Netherlands, with Louis Van Gaal overseeing a talented team which could go a long way in the competition. From a Liverpool perspective, the hope is that most of the players return injury free, but the fewer games they play during the tournament, the better is it for Jürgen Klopp and the remainder of Liverpool’s season. Depending on whether the likes of Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konaté and Thiago Alcântara are selected and whether Scotland make the tournament, Liverpool could see between 10 and 14 players go to Qatar. At the absolute least, there are 10 more or less guaranteed to make the plane for the Middle East. Brazil, Spain and Portugal are all expected to go far in the tournament and, given the nature of their groups, the likes of Alisson, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Thiago and Diogo Jota will likely make good on the hopes of a longer stay in Qatar. England ‘s group also means that Jordan Henderson and Alexander-Arnold will also spend a fair amount of time in the desert. In terms of numbers of players going to the tournament from Liverpool’s squad, there aren’t as many as one would expect. One of which will see Sadio Mané’s Senegal face The Netherlands, and a clash with Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk. Van Dijk almost predicted being in the same group as Senegal, as earlier in the week, he stated: “"Well obviously, I feel sorry for Mo [Salah] and for Egypt, but football is sometimes like this. Senegal and The Netherlands are joined in Group A with the hosts Qatar and South American side Ecuador. England’s group is a little less tricky, with Iran, USA and one of Scotland, Ukraine or Wales in Group B. But we could see a Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Andy Robertson battle. It was cheaper for Liverpool to keep him than replace him, and it was better for him to stay in terms of his footballing ambitions than trying to start again at a new club elsewhere. If Salah really is set to sign a new deal that could keep him at Liverpool for another four years, then that was always the sensible solution. Now, the Daily Mirror report that a new contract for Salah is on the verge of being signed, with Salah having performed a U-turn on his contract demands. Even long after the Liverpool team bus had passed, a crowd of a few hundred gathered to have photographs taken in front of it — the latest painting in the area after others including of Trent Alexander-Arnold have popped up of late. As Liverpool's team coach moved towards the part of the Main Stand that it disappears underneath for the players to exit and make their way into the dressing rooms, it passed a new mural that would have caught Mohamed Salah's eye. After a period in his season that has been tricky, with losses in the AFCON final and then the play-off to get into the World Cup coinciding with a spell where his overall game has gone off the boil, the desperation for him to stay has never wavered despite his agent provoking questions over his real intentions. If that is the case, it should not have taken this long to come to that conclusion.

A Tuesday to Sunday turnaround ahead of the Premier League game should have got the worst effects of the Suárez antics out of Man City’s system, but playing the second leg away at Atlético on the Wednesday night ahead of a Saturday meeting in the FA Cup could be hugely testing. In a title race of such fine margins, perhaps the effects of the trip to Portugal will have a residual impact, but with more than four full days to recover it should not prove decisive. If all goes well, Liverpool may even be able to field a second string side in their own second leg, which will be played at Anfield: the difference is stark. Ninety minutes of handling Suárez, Simeone and all the other wily old foxes, even at the Etihad, is worth about six flights to Lisbon. It is still a colossal ask for Liverpool to come through this fortnight unscathed. Nonetheless, if the Uruguayan is locked into one of his goalscoring veins of form, it is very bad news for Manchester City. Now 35, he is also no longer a certainty to start, but he will relish any chance he gets to make a nuisance of himself. However, the striker will surely have been grateful for the run-out, a great confidence-booster ahead of his biggest game of the campaign. READ MORE: Mohamed Salah may finally have realised what Liverpool always knew as contract solution 'near' To make matters worse for Man City, their opponents are entering the tie in extremely good form, in stark contrast to Benfica. Unbeaten in eight and on a six-game winning streak, they warmed up for the Champions League tie with a 4-1 drubbing of Alavés. Suárez and João Félix both helped themselves to braces. Félix has not even been a guaranteed starter in the league this season, with Simeone typically preferring to save the talented youngster for the big Champions League nights. It was immediately clear that the Champions League draw had been kind to Liverpool. It would be dangerous to write off Benfica out of hand, but on paper they are the weakest side left in the competition. Sandwiched between that first game are the two legs of the Champions League quarter-final against Benfica. It doesn’t get much more high-stakes, but Jürgen Klopp could hold a critical four-game advantage — and Luis Suárez is partly to thank.

March Review: A month of progress for Liverpool (Rush The Kop)

March was a month of progress for Liverpool. The Reds progressed to the quarterfinals in the Champions League and the semifinals in the FA cup.

This was a tough decision between TAA and Andy Robertson. Both outside backs had a superb month, but we’ll give this one to Trent. The Scouser was a part of all three league clean sheets this month, capping off some impressive defensive performances. A solid month that brings Alisson’s season clean sheet tally to 22 in all appearances and 17 in the Premier League. Alisson is currently tied with fellow Brazilian Ederson for the league lead. And we ultimately did our job — we advanced to the next round of the Champions League. If there was one match to slip up and have a momentary lapse of concentration, this was the match. That one loss, a 1-0 scoreline at Anfield to Inter Milan in the second leg of the UCL round of 16, definitely stung at the time, but in the grand scheme of things, I believe it will turn out to be a blessing in disguise. We also made progress in the Premier League as City’s lead has dropped to just one point. March was a month of progress for Liverpool. Man United keep drifting, Jota Liverpool's MVP, Pedri comes up big ... (ESPN)

What a weekend! With Premier League title chasers Liverpool and Man City winning, Man United were again left frustrated in their chase for fourth place.

With the match still in the balance late, he drew a penalty (via what amounted to an American football tackle by Juraj Kucka) that Fabinho converted in the 89th minute to wrap up the 2-0 victory. Villa are comfortably mid-table and in no danger of relegation, but a bad end to a season can impact the next campaign and Gerrard needs to find a way to arrest the slump and reignite his team's fortunes. The teams remain separated by just one point after matching 2-0 wins on Saturday -- City over Burnley, Liverpool over Watford -- but while City were dominant from the start, Liverpool had a sloppy go of it for large portions of their win. He scored off a gorgeous cross from Joe Gomez in the 22nd minute, and forced a short-range save by Ben Foster late in the first half. With the 1-0 victory, Barca have now won six league games in a row and are unbeaten in 13 matches in all competitions. Pedri scored the goal of the weekend in Spain to take Barcelona above Sevilla into second place in LaLiga. The Barca midfielder received the ball just outside the box late in the second half and feigned to shoot on his left foot, sending Sevilla's Ivan Rakitic flying in the other direction. It continued this weekend, too, as Napoli's 3-1 win over Atalanta to draw level with Milan (who play Monday) was the prelude to a fiery, contentious Derby d'Italia in which Inter Milan won at red-hot Juventus to stay within reach of their rivals. Borussia Dortmund nearly went ahead in the seventh minute when Marco Reus misplayed a prime transition opportunity, but they overwhelmed RBL in the first 20 minutes, attempting five shots to the visitors' zero and tilting the field to the tune of 48 touches in the attacking third to RBL's eight. Christopher Nkunku put the match out of reach in the 58th minute, popping up to assist a late Dani Olmo goal. Konrad Laimer dinked in a transition goal in the 21st minute, then scored off a deflection in the 30th. Celta captain Aspas said the first two were "soft" and that the third one, for a foul by Kevin Vazquez on Ferland Mendy, was "never a penalty." After being held to a 1-1 draw against Leicester at Old Trafford on Saturday, United are facing the reality of missing out on Champions League qualification.

Jordan Henderson is another strong contender, although the duo haven't started a Champions League game together since early November. Thiago Alcantara impressed at the weekend and started both round of 16 legs against Inter Milan, while Curtis Jones began the return game and was in the XI on Saturday. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wasn't involved against Inter despite featuring in every group game and James Milner has played for just 12 minutes in the Champions League since October. Liverpool are waiting on Naby Keita recovering from a minor knee complaint while Harvey Elliott missed out against Watford and instead played 45 minutes for the under-23s in their 2-2 draw at home to Chelsea. Liverpool possess two forwards who spent time challenging Benfica while playing in Portugal. Diogo Jota is in form having scored in each of the Reds' last three games, but January signing Luis Diaz has been used sparingly since his winner at Brighton three weeks ago. However, with Alexander-Arnold now back fit, Klopp faces a decision over whether to reintroduce the defender ahead of a big few weeks or stick with the in-form Gomez. And out of those who would, only a small proportion of them are likely good enough to make a difference at Anfield. But if Liverpool scouts have been keeping a close eye on Germany's U21 fixtures this season or Klopp's former team, Mainz, they might have found an ideal candidate in 21-year-old Jonathan Burkardt. He is not a name many will have heard of outside the Bundesliga circles, but he could be one of the most exciting underrated prospects in Germany at the moment. READ MORE: Mohamed Salah Liverpool contract might be about to unleash next phase of 12-year FSG plan READ MORE: Pep Guardiola might already have made an error as Liverpool get critical edge over Man City Replacing the duo, valued at just over £21m combined by Transfermarkt, will be a difficult task. Burkardt can play as a centre-forward, but also as a right-winger (an area Liverpool are short of at the moment) as well as on the left if necessary. His £15m price tag on Transfermarkt makes him a fairly affordable option for FSG considering the club values Takumi Minamino at £20m. Klopp may also be able to use his close links with Mainz, where he is still a fan favourite to Liverpool's advantage, too, and negotiate an even more affordable price for a player who has a contract with Mainz until 2024. Pacey and fast with an eye for goal, Burkardt is a quintessential Liverpool player. He might also be tempted by the chance to work with one of the most renowned managers in world football, not least one who is especially esteemed around the circles Burkardt has developed in at Mainz. His playing style, as we have previously written, is well suited to the gegenpress system deployed by Klopp at Liverpool. What is alluring about him is that he is also capable of playing in multiple positions. On the surface, their departures will not be seen as a huge loss since they have been merely peripheral members of Jürgen Klopp's squad.
