The 32 nations who will be competing in this year's World Cup in Qatar will learn their group matchups on Friday. Here's how you can follow the draw.

Costa Rica will take on New Zealand in one intercontiental playoff, and Peru will face the winner of the United Arab Emirates versus Australia in the other. Those matches will take place in June. The other three groups each get one European team. That means they'll be part of Pot 2 as the eight groups for the tournament — held Nov. 21 to Dec. 18 in Qatar — are drawn from four pots based on their current rankings. In each of the four pots (of eight teams each), one team will be drawn and placed into groups A through H. Europe has 13 teams in the tournament and five of the eight groups will each get two teams from the continent.

Final qualifiers are still wrapping up, leaving a few spots left in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but that's not stopping the ball rolling on the tournament.

Brazil would go on to win the World Cup. The term originated during the 1970 World Cup in Mexico as a way to refer to the horrific Group C, which saw Brazil, England, Romania and Czechoslovakia put together. * Italy failed to qualify for the second straight World Cup. It’s an extremely unusual World Cup that won’t kick off until November 21 due to concerns about heat in the Persian Gulf, which routinely tops 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and would be hazardous for players. Friday marks the announcement of the draw for group stages, with 32 teams, including host nation Qatar, all finding out their fates. Teams were arranged into four pots, and then selected by random draw.

Part of that has to do with the changes in the way the group draw is done. Drawing into Qatar's group is going to be the goal for the teams in Pots 2-4. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar begins Nov. 21, with group play continuing through Dec. 2. For example, the CONCACAF-Oceania winner will not be placed in a group with the USMNT, Mexico or Canada. The 2022 FIFA World Cup draw was held on Friday in Doha and this year's event in Qatar promises early drama after a number of intriguing group draws.

USMNT rivalry aside, the Three Lions will feel pleased with their group as Iran and the winner of Scotland, Wales or Ukraine's eventual UEFA playoff should not cause too much fear. Getting Spain and Germany is pretty brutal with a playoff team to be added to the mix as well. The defending champions will be undaunted by drawing strong qualifiers Denmark who they know well from 2018. Portugal was the final team into Pot 1 but looks to have its hands full with Ghana coming out of Pot 4. The pairings are quite uncanny considering that Brazil, Serbia and Switzerland also shared a group in 2018. This is already turning out to be one of the most formidable groups, and a clear potential Group of Death candidate. Four of the last five champions haven’t gotten out of the group in their title defenses. And while it’s not Serbia or Senegal, Japan could arguably be one of the tougher Pot 3 teams. The bad news is that a potential matchup with Wales, ranked 18th in the FIFA world rankings, waits in the wings if Gareth Bale & Co. can win its June playoff.

History Is on Europe's Side Following Competitive 2022 World Cup ... (Sports Illustrated)

Will the Qatar edition mark the first time in 20 years that a non-European nation takes home the World Cup trophy?

Otto Addo was placed in temporary charge for that playoff and he could point with justifiable satisfaction to the way his side controlled the game even in the hostile atmosphere in Abuja. It may feel it has a point to prove against Uruguay, after the way Luis Suarez’s handball denied it at the last minute in the 2010 quarterfinal. Óscar Tabárez had been in charge for 15 years, had reshaped the entire structure of the country’s coaching and youth development, won a Copa América and led his side to a World Cup semifinal, but a sense of staleness had taken hold. Brazil won the World Cup last time it was staged in Asia. Twenty years on, it is one of probably only two sides with a realistic chance of putting a stop to the run of four straight European winners that have followed. Son Heung-min is the obvious star, but this is a side based on its defense; it conceded just three goals in those 10 group games. It went out in the group at the African Cup of Nations, and rather limped through qualifying, needing a highly questionable penalty against South Africa to top its group before an away goals win over Nigeria in the playoff. Kevin De Bruyne remains one of the best midfielders in the world, but, while there are questions about Romelu Lukaku’s form, the biggest issues are at the back where Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld will have a combined age of 68 by the time the World Cup begins. It had only ever won two matches at a World Cup stage, but one of those was against the U. S. in 1998. It faces familiar opposition in Mexico, now under a former Argentina coach in Gerardo Martino. They met in the first World Cup and they’ve met twice since, Argentina wining on all three occasions. Memories of that embarrassment and Gareth Southgate’s admirable sobriety should guard against overconfidence, as should the fact that, by world ranking, this is the toughest group. Which, of course, brings up the biggest issue of this World Cup: that it is being held in Qatar, the most controversial host since the Argentinian junta of 1978. Hosts are never easy to assess given their dearth of qualifiers, but despite that Asian Cup success in 2019, there must be concern about the string of heavy defeats to Portugal, Ireland and Serbia last autumn and a draw against Azerbaijan. South Africa, though, remains the only host to fail to make it out of the group. And that perhaps hints at a growing sense that the expansion of football seen in the 1980s and ’90s is heading into retreat, that money is beginning to dominate the international game as the major western European nations invest in youth development.

USA World Cup draw 2022: Group B results with England, matches ... (Sporting News)

Infamously, the U. S. did not qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. A team with plenty of talent entering its prime, the squad is bursting with promise for the future. At the striker position, the team has been unable to replace the presence of Jozy Altidore, and while young talents like Ricardo Pepi and Jesus Ferreira provide hope for the future, they do not yet appear to be ready to carry the goalscoring load. This team is stacked at the wing position, with four starting-caliber wingers in Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, Brenden Aaronson, and Tim Weah, necessitating a possible drop for Reyna into midfield. However, there will be aspirations of reaching the knockout stage, and even potentially winning a game, and a group stage exit would be seen as a disappointment, likely received as yet another wasted cycle. Since, they've reached the World Cup 10 times in 21 tournaments, missing a long stretch between 1954 and 1986 before establishing themselves as a consistent participant.

FIFA World Cup draw: Spain and Germany to face off in mouth ... (CNN)

Spain and Germany will face off in the headline act of the group stages at the 2022 World Cup after the draw for the tournament was made in Doha on Friday.

The two are also joined by the Netherlands and Senegal in Group A.Qatar has relatively recent experience of playing South American nations after being invited to the 2019 Copa America. The Qataris acquitted themselves well, making Argentina work hard for a 2-0 win and earning a well-deserved pointed against Paraguay.France, winners of the 2018 and 1998 World Cups, were drawn into Group D with Denmark, Tunisia and the winner of an Intercontinental play-off -- either Australia, United Arab Emirates or Peru.Group B also offers up a number of interesting clashes, with 2018 semifinalists England facing the USA, Iran and one of Wales, Scotland or Ukraine. The last time England faced the USA at a World Cup was back in 2010 -- and it's a match that still gives English fans nightmares.A calamitous error from then goalkeeper Rob Green gifted the Americans an equalizer after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring for England.Ghana has also been offered a change of revenge of sorts after being drawn in Group H alongside Uruguay. In 2010, Luis Suarez infamously used his hands to block Dominic Adiyiah's goalbound effort on the line in the dying seconds of their quarterfinal.Asamoah Gyan missed the subsequent penalty -- resulting in Suarez running down the tunnel in celebration -- and Uruguay eventually reached the semifinals after a penalty shootout.Portugal, with Cristiano Ronaldo likely appearing at his last World Cup, and South Korea complete Group H in what will perhaps be one of the trickier groups to predict.Qatar 2022 will also likely be Lionel Messi's last World Cup for Argentina. Like Ronaldo, the 34-year-old has never won the World Cup but came agonizingly close in 2014, losing out to Germany in the final.Under Lionel Scaloni, the Argentines are in a considerably better place than they were four years ago in Russia and will certainly be confident of advancing out of group that includes Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia.Canada's reward for qualifying for a first World Cup in 36 years is a showdown against two of European football's leading protagonists in recent years. FIFA World Cup draw: Spain and Germany to face off in mouth-watering group stage matchSpain and Germany will face off in the headline act of the group stages at the 2022 World Cup after the draw for the tournament was made in Doha on Friday. 2022 World Cup draw: USMNT will face England, Iran and ... (USA TODAY)

The United States was drawn into Group B for the 2022 World Cup with England, Iran and the winner of a UEFA playoff.

The handshakes before the game in France had to be choreographed, and Iran’s players gave U. S. players white roses as a symbol of peace. “Overall, it’s going to be a strong group,” Berhalter said. They have played Wales only twice, winning once and playing to a 0-0 tie in 2020. “I’m not sure the tension is what it (was). If we were friends back in ’98, 24 years later, I don’t see it any differently,” Berhalter said. The USMNT has only faced Iran twice, including a 2-1 loss at the 1998 World Cup that had significant political overtones. That means teams in the first groups, including the USMNT, will have little time together before their first match. Two years earlier, it reached the semifinals at the World Cup in Russia. Drawn into Group B on Friday, the Americans also will play Iran and either Scotland, Ukraine or Wales in the World Cup later this year. “We’re going to have to be really effective in these weeks in June and then when we get together in September. Because when we get to Qatar, it’s basically prep for a game and go from there.” We want to have an impact, obviously on ourselves and our team, but ultimately on how (U. S.) soccer is viewed. Play well against England, and it can open eyes and opportunities for this group of players and the ones who will come after them. “That’s something that’s always reiterated when we go into camp, to change the way the world views American soccer.

USMNT's World Cup draw avoids doomsday scenario, but ... (ESPN)

As World Cup draws go, the United States men's national team didn't get the toughest assignment for the 2022 World Cup, but it's also far from easy.

Getting past any one of those teams and reaching the quarterfinals, where a matchup with Argentina is possible, would be a magnificent accomplishment. Of course, Gareth Southgate's side will be the favorites to progress, even as the U. S. has historically given the English all it could handle. Iran is consistently one of the top teams in the Asian Football Confederation, reaching the semifinals of the Asian Cup as recently as 2019. But if the U.S. can repeat its feat from 2010 and top the group, a tough matchup against one of hosts Qatar, Ecuador and Senegal -- with its superstar trio of Sadio Mane, Edouard Mendy and captain Kalidou Koulibaly -- awaits. "And then we have Iran, which is a difficult opponent given they've finished first in their group of qualifying in Asia, the first Asian team to qualify after [hosts] Qatar, scored a lot of goals, dangerous team and then the unknown of Scotland, Wales or Ukraine. Scotland and Wales are pretty similar in terms of how they're approaching the game. But that is getting ahead of ourselves. Based on FIFA's rankings -- which admittedly should be taken with a grain of salt -- Iran is the lowest-ranked team in Group B at No. 21. It's going to be a good test either way. It's going be a good opponent." "It was amazing to get England in our group," he said. In pure soccer terms, that will present its own special kind of challenge. The fourth-ranked team in every other group has a worse ranking.

Gregg Berhalter, Tyler Adams, Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie spoke about the World Cup challenge that awaits.

So it’s going be important that now we have the mindset going into this tournament that we have really good performances.” “To be honest, the sooner the better for me. “I think everyone really knows a lot about England and what they have to offer, and their roster and the players that they have, the caliber of them,” U. S. midfielder Weston McKennie said. On Friday, as Berhalter and his players were taking it all in, it was more about the excitement of returning to this stage and, as Adams said, simply seeing the U. S. included in the draw and imagining what might be possible. I consider him an excellent coach, and have a lot of respect for what he’s done with the program.” While one is the birthplace of the game and the other is relatively new to it, the exposure English football enjoys in the U.S. is massive and its influence on U.S. soccer is immeasurable. Pulisic is one of a handful of U. S. players with ties to England. Several play in the Premier League or Championship, left back Antonee Robinson is a native and midfielder Yunus Musah spent a chunk of his childhood there. “So I honestly didn’t have any expectations going into [the draw]. I’ve had a couple Champions League draws now, and I’ve had what’s the ‘group of death’ where we had Man City and PSG, and then I’ve had groups that are quote-unquote a little bit easier. When you add that European team to it, it’s going to be a well-rounded group and it’s going be difficult to advance. But that’s a positive, because I think everyone’s going to be battling and … I think it will come down to the last game.” But I’m going on fumes and it’s a positive type of fumes that you’re going on. “We had plans to go to Dubai a week before with the entire team.

America's World Cup Draw Is Pretty Lucky (Slate Magazine)

The United States men's national soccer team now knows the road it will take at the 2022 World Cup, and it is a treacherous one, though not in the way you ...

National teams are collages; the players grow and change in isolation at their clubs, then every couple of months they have to be fitted together in the best way possible. With the two teams meeting in the last match of the first round, it could be the decider for the U. S., which lost to Iran in the 1998 tournament. Similarly, Reyna might be key to unlocking the best version of Pulisic for his country. (It did play Wales to a 0–0 draw in the first match back after the pandemic began, in late 2020.) The last time the U.S. played someone who will be among the favorites in 2022 was a November 2018 friendly against, of all people, England. It lost 3–0. (America’s next game against the failed-to-qualify-but-still-current-European-champions Italy was a 1–0 defeat.) Berhalter hadn’t even been hired yet. After that, FIFA has scheduled a two-game international window in September that’s the last chance to play international games before players are released for the World Cup on November 14. The U. S. was mostly good in qualifying, but it has been playing in a bubble for a long time now, squaring off against just a handful of non–North American teams in the past year. The players America used in qualifying had the youngest age of any already-qualified team by two entire years. All of which is to say that this USMNT is unproven, and one suspects that the team would be best served testing itself against whatever quality opposition it can find. The draw on Friday placed the U. S. in Group B along with England, Iran, and a European team to be named later. The U.S. has a lot of good and bad days. It has to like its odds, but short tournaments are high-variance events (ask Gonzaga). The USMNT drew one of the easiest groups in the 2010 tournament (England, Algeria, Slovenia) and one of the most difficult in the 2014 tournament (Germany, Portugal, Ghana) and managed to advance out of both. Iran stormed through the last round of Asian qualifying, losing just once (to South Korea, away) in the final round to top its group.

World Cup 2022 Group B draw: England, USA, Iran, Wales/Scotland ... (Sporting News)

England drew the USA, Iran and potentially another British side as Wales gets set to face the winner of Scotland vs. Ukraine in June to determine the final ...

Wales will look to qualify for a first World Cup finals since 1958, when they reached the quarterfinals of the competition. Scotland’s ambitions of the World Cup have been revived once again, as they seek to be part of a first finals since 1998. Ukraine in the last UEFA playoff final, however, the tie between Scotland and Ukraine has been indefinitely postponed due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It has not yet been confirmed when that fixture will be settled. Football has rightly taken a back seat in Ukraine due to the ongoing invasion by Russian forces. That was enough for Iran to finish top of their group, as they edged out South Korea, who also qualified as runners-up. The U. S. will be a real threat going forward for teams to worry about, given their 21 goals scored in qualification. The four teams selected into the group will play a round-robin format with each nation facing the other three. Iran, drawn as the first Pot 3 team, was moved to Group B with England and the United States due to fellow Asian confederation team Qatar's presence in Group A. It’s now a question of whether they can get over the line. Events away from the pitch mean that the outcome of who will qualify for the 2022 World Cup out of Wales, Scotland and Ukraine is yet to be determined. If teams are also tied in those categories another set of tiebreakers is applied. Group B in the FIFA World Cup promises to be one of the more compelling in 2022 with England drawn against the USA and Iran along with one more team yet to be determined.

World Cup 2022 Group A draw: Qatar, Netherlands, Senegal ... (Sporting News)

The teams in Group A at the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be determined by a draw taking place on Friday, April 1 in Doha, Qatar. The tournament will be hosted ...

Since then, the cash outlay on player development, coaching and infrastructure has paid off with a No. 51 FIFA World Ranking, up from 112th. The four teams selected into the group will play a round-robin format with each nation facing the other three. If teams are also tied in those categories another set of tiebreakers is applied. And finally, Ecuador were drawn from Pot 4 to round out the group. Despite being ranked No. 51, Qatar were included with the top-seeded teams in Pot 1 as is customary for host nations at FIFA World Cup events. Also in the group are Senegal, the AFCON 2022 champions, making this a difficult draw for the hosts.
