World Cup finals draw top seeds set after Portugal beat North ... (ESPN)

The eight seeded teams for Friday's World Cup finals draw have been confirmed after Portugal sealed their place with a win over North Macedonia.

All four pots will be ordered by the FIFA World Ranking, apart from the winners of the three remaining playoffs -- two intercontinental and the outstanding UEFA path involving Ukraine which are due to be played in June -- who will be placed into Pot 4 regardless of their FIFA Ranking. It means heavyweights Germany and Netherlands, along with Denmark, Switzerland, Croatia and Uruguay, will be placed into Pot 2 and face the likelihood of a difficult group for the finals, which will be held between Nov. 21 and Dec. 18 in Qatar. Pot 1 contains hosts Qatar, along with strongest seven nations to have qualified for the finals, according to the next FIFA World Ranking which will be officially published on Thursday ahead of the draw.

A team's path through to the quarterfinals, semifinals and final is set in the bracket. The FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar will kick-off on November 21, and finishes on December 18. Why is the schedule so tight? The 32-team lineup is the perfect number for a knockout bracket. Each four-team group of is a round-robin of six games in total. The next eight highest-ranked qualifiers go into pot 2, which is the second to be drawn. Canada are in pot 4 despite leading the North American qualifying group. Pot 4 will include the qualified teams in positions 24 to 28, plus three placeholders -- the two winners of the intercontinental play-offs and the remaining UEFA play-off winner. That team also gets just two full days off before a round of 16 game on December 5. Qatar, as hosts, will take position A1 in Pot 1, where they will be joined by the seven highest-ranked teams. Teams which can still qualify: UAE or Australia meet in the fourth round, with the winners facing Peru to decide the AFC vs CONMEBOL inter-confederation play-off. The draw for FIFA World Cup 2022 will be telecast live.
