But for the efforts of Thibaut Courtois in the Madrid goal, his side's defeat would have been even heavier. Mallorca's defeat saw them drop into the bottom three after Cadiz took advantage of that result with a 1-0 win at home to Villarreal, who rested several key players and suffered a hangover after their 3-0 Champions League win away to Juventus in midweek. It is now six consecutive defeats for Real Mallorca after Raul de Tomas' goal at the end of the first half condemned them to a 1-0 defeat away to Espanyol. The win just about assures Espanyol's survival while making De Tomas the top-scoring Spaniard in La Liga.

Player Ratings: Real Madrid 0 - 4 Barcelona; 2022 La Liga (Managing Madrid)

All eyes were on Carlo Ancelotti's starting XI and which player would replace Karim Benzema ahead of the first league Clasico against Xavi's in-form ...

Marco Asensio—4: Managed one nice touch to draw a foul from Dani Alves, but otherwise saw little of the ball and made little impact. Eduardo Camavinga—5: Came on to try and change the tide of the match at half-time, but instead things only got worse as Carlo opted for another experimental formation. Fede Valverde—5: Ancelotti had the Uruguayan man-marking Pedri for large stretches of the match, but the man-marking role took the midfield out of shape and gave Barcelona opportunities to take advantage of the open space between the lines. Nacho—1: A night to forget for the stand in captain. It was a make-shift line-up with the intent to press high, but it failed on every level. Fede Valverde slotted in on the right wing and Rodrygo Goes was the man chosen to replace Benzema as a number nine.

The two early goals completely sucked the life out of Madrid and the Bernabéu, but Barça looked a little flat for a while and allowed the home team to have some possession and attempt a few shots on goal. The only negative from the first half was that Barça didn’t score more: Aubameyang could have had a hat-trick, and Ferran Torres came painfully close with a brilliant effort. Actually, it wasn’t. That was literally the only good moment Madrid had in the entire first half thanks to a truly spectacular performance by an inspired Barça team.
