Volkswagen is recalling approximately 23,129 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles in Canada due to a wiring issue that can cause unexpected braking.

This can cause the airbag to deploy inadvertently. The issue can also cause airbags to deploy late. A fractured steering knuckle can cause a loss of vehicle control.

Complaints started to come in to NHTSA in the fall of 2020. The documents say a repair is being developed. But many of those who complained to NHTSA said the unwanted braking happened while they were driving on city streets, putting them in danger. VW decided to do a recall on March 4, “out of an abundance of caution,” the documents said. Documents filed with the government by VW show the company started getting complaints in 2020. Volkswagen says in documents that the SUVs can brake at speeds below 1.8 miles per hour.

In the filing, VW says a fix is currently under development, but that won't stop the automaker from notifying affected customers with mailers that are expected to be sent out on May 10. In that filing, the German automaker notes that "excessive micro movement leading to fretting corrosion of the door wiring harness terminal contacts" can result in the delayed deployment of the vehicle's front driver or passenger side airbags "in a special side crash situation." According to documents related to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall filing published on Wednesday, VW says the issue stems from a faulty door wiring harness sourced from a specific unnamed supplier.
