"There were many ancient civilizations that used approximations of pi in calculations, but it was Archimedes who was the first to do a calculation of pi," Smith explains. The word for the tasty dessert — pie — comes from "magpie," like the bird. That originally came from the Latin, "pica." The story gets pretty long from there. "It was organized by a physicist named Larry Shaw out in San Francisco," Smith reports. "For example, NASA uses pi regularly to calculate trajectories of space craft. It's also used nowadays when any kind of building construction is going on — anything that is circular or has circular parts, like arches or circular pillars — where those kinds of calculations have to be done."

Pies around the world -- sweet and savory pastries to celebrate Pi Day (unknown)

March 14 is Pi Day. It's a delicious excuse to celebrate an enduring culinary concept -- that is, the many edible varieties of pie around the world.

Layers of flaky phyllo also form the crust for Albanian burek or byrek, savory pies that can be filled with everything from ground meat to spinach and cheese. While the original recipe (spelled banoffi) calls for a pastry crust, many iterations use a biscuit or graham cracker crust instead. Adding fresh corn kernels to a sweet custard or chess pie filling is a common theme for bakers and gardeners making the most of late summer produce. Spanakopita is one of the most well-known, featuring a spinach and feta filling inside flaky phyllo dough, but there's also its cousin hortopita, made with wild greens; tiropita, a savory cheese pie; and maridopita, a fish pie. The British and their colonies seem to have perfected the art of the meat pie. In ancient Rome, early meat pies used dough merely as a vessel for preserving the meat's tenderness, not for eating with the filling.
