Mercedes 'spaceship' F1 mirrors prompt Ferrari calls for rules ... (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Ferrari has called for a clampdown on Formula 1's mirror design regulations, amid fears that Mercedes' new concept could trigger wild 'spaceship' designs.

They serve as an interesting aerodynamic function that many of the teams have picked up on since and have reworked into their 2022 designs. F1 teams pushed their luck again in 2018 when they decided to mount their wing mirrors on the side of the halo. “I think that the way that they have designed their car, certainly there is a significant aero purpose in the mirrors itself. On the legality overall, I don't think that we can have any 'doubt’. I think in the spirit of that, it is something that I think for the future needs to be addressed. “I find them quite surprising, and it is something that we are not expecting.

Charles Leclerc quickest as Ferrari continues strong start to F1 ... (ESPN)

Charles Leclerc set the fastest time on the opening morning of the second test in Bahrain as Ferrari continued its strong preseason form.

At one stage, Hamilton's car was trailed by showers of sparks on the pit straight and he struggled to get the W13 slowed down in the braking zones at Turn 1 and Turn 10. However, ESPN understands Haas will get four hours of running back as the freight delay was a result of a delay from one of Formula One's cargo planes. Despite the radical design, Lewis Hamilton seemed to struggle for much of the morning with the car porpoising on the straights. Haas was the only team that did not take part in the morning session. It also features two sets of louvres cut into each sidepod to help with cooling. Porpoising was a problem for all teams at the opening test in Barcelona and results in the car bouncing up and down on its suspension at high speed due to the intermittent stalling of the car's underfloor aerodynamics.

Magnussen explains decision behind F1 return with Haas (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Kevin Magnussen says he didn't realise how much he missed Formula 1 until Haas offered him the opportunity to make a comeback.

“There was a lot of stuff that had to be sorted out, of course. I had only done that for two years, as previous to that I had been in the midfield and that was really fun. “I was enjoying it and then Gunther called me and ruined all of that!

F1 watching closely as Mercedes debuts 'extreme' sidepod design (RACER)

Mercedes has appeared at the final pre-season test in Bahrain with a significant upgrade that features a radical sidepod design.

But with an 80% team majority we can change the wording, so if something has slipped by then the team is aware that can happen, and that can happen live during the season, so we need to see how this one plays out.” In the past you needed everybody to agree to a change in the season, now it’s 80%, as long as the FIA and F1 also agree. “I think there’s no doubt that the Mercedes concept, we didn’t anticipate,” Brawn said.

New Mercedes F1 car has no illegal parts, insists team principal ... (The Guardian)

Mercedes principal Toto Wolff denied his team's new F1 car had sidepods that flouted regulations.

Brawn said the Mercedes approach, which he described as “extreme”, had not been expected and noted that even if the car is within the regulations such innovations could now be banned mid-season should eight of the 10 teams (known as a “supermajority”) agree. “That doesn’t correspond to the spirit of the regulations. “We were keen in not running alone, but being in touch with the FIA, that is why I think it will be OK. It is clear that when you come with an innovation it creates the kind of debate that we are having here.

Magnussen accepted F1 was a 'closed chapter' after 2020 (Motorsport Week)

Kevin Magnussen says that he made peace with the thought of never returning to Formula 1 after he departed Haas at the end of the 2020 season.

I felt really excited when he called me and asked if I wanted to come back. “I had some thoughts about what if we’re going to run it back again, if it’s going to be fun or not, but with this regulation change there’s some opportunity that things will be a little better. “So I thought that it was still not going to be a possibility, then Gunther called me, and it was a big surprise.

What the F1 regulations says about Mercedes' sidepod solution (autosport.com)

Mercedes raised some eyebrows on the opening day of the second pre-season Formula 1 test when it rolled out its radical new sidepod solution on the W13.

There’s still some geometrical tricks being played with the floor edge here in order to entice the airflow. This move to a more centreline dominant cooling package is nothing new though, as teams have been pushing in this direction for some time now.
