The Studio Display is compatible with other Macs and iPads, but it was designed to match the Mac Studio. The M1 Ultra can play up to 18 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video, while the M1 Max supports up to nine. The Mac Studio can be purchased with either M1 Max or M1 Ultra chips. To dissipate heat and allow for quiet operation, the Mac Studio has a series of airflow channels at the back and at the bottom. Comparatively, the highest-end Mac Pro earned a single-core score of 1152 and a multi-core score of 19951. This is especially impressive given that the Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra chip starts at $3,999, while a Mac Pro tower configured with a 28-core processor is over three times more expensive at $12,999. The extra weight in the M1 Ultra version is due to a difference in thermal needs. On the front, there is an SD card slot, along with two USB-C ports for M1 Max configurations or two Thunderbolt 4 ports for M1 Ultra configurations. There are four Thunderbolt 4 ports at the back of the Mac Studio, along with a 10Gb Ethernet port, two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack with support for high-impedance headphones. According to Apple, the M1 Ultra's CPU is up to 3.8x faster than the highest-end Intel Core i9 iMac (which has now been discontinued), and up to 60 percent faster than the 28-core Mac Pro with Intel Xeon W processor. The Mac Studio is the newest Mac in Apple's lineup and is very early in its product cycle. The M1 Ultra chip is essentially two M1 Max chips connected together on a single die and able to perform as one chip, which Apple calls UltraFusion architecture.
Here's the swankiest possible desktop setup you can assemble with Apple's new hardware.
The Mac Studio is a new product line from Apple. It's compact in size -- like the Mac Mini, but taller -- coming in at 3.7 inches tall. It's the first machine from Apple that runs its brand-new M1 Ultra chip, which was announced alongside the machine at Apple's latest event. At 7.7 by 3.7 inches, the Mac Studio is designed to live under the formidable 27-inch monitor. Add in some $300 glare-reducing premium nano-texture glass and a $400 stand that enables you to adjust its height, and you're looking at a monitor totaling $2,299. (It's important to note that once you make a choice, your decision will be final: Apple won't let you add more memory or storage after you buy the computer.) At first glance, the bundle's base cost is about $3,600, which accounts for the $1,999 Mac Studio and $1,599 Studio Display. If you choose the highest possible processing power and storage options, however, the two devices converge to create an impressive desktop workspace for over $10,000.

Mac Studio and Studio Display were designed to minimize their environmental impact. Mac Studio also shatters the limits of graphics memory on a desktop, featuring up to 64GB of unified memory on systems with M1 Max and up to 128GB of unified memory on systems with M1 Ultra. Since the most powerful workstation graphics card available today only offers 48GB of video memory, having this massive amount of memory is game changing for pro workloads. Let us know your plans for the Mac Studio and the rest of the Mac line in the comments below. But I'll tell you this: it's definitely the next Mac I'll be buying when I need to upgrade. That would cause the massive cooling needs to require the much taller case of the Mac Studio. The new Mac Studio overcomes that, providing all the ports the Intel Mac mini offered and then some. Assuming Apple can deliver a reliable machine in volume, the Mac Studio is a home run. The Mac mini has long been an Apple cash cow. Again, Apple managed to cool those same processors inside the MacBook Pro, and there's far less room for airflow inside that laptop than there is in the much bigger Mac mini internal cavity. To do that, let's take a moment to revisit the very last Intel-based Mac mini (which Apple is still selling). I wrote about that Mac mini last year. In fact, earlier this month, YouTuber Snazzy Labs proved that the M1 Mac mini logic board was small enough for them to be able to actually hack it into a half-size case. The 7.7-inch square footprint is identical to the Mac mini footprint, but it's 2.5 times taller. The new Mac Studio is 7.7 inches square. Until now, if you needed absolutely extreme Mac performance, you bought a Mac Pro. The still-Intel-based platform was redesigned in 2019; the still-Intel based platform provided the raw power extreme pros needed.

First revealed by 9to5Mac, Apple today launched its new Mac Studio computer powered by the new M1 Ultra chip.
With the power and efficiency of Apple silicon, Mac Studio completely reimagines what a high-performance desktop looks like. Apple on Tuesday announced its brand new tower computer called “Mac Studio,” which is aimed at professional users. Mac Studio represents a new category between Mac mini and Mac Pro. It features a design based on the Mac mini, but with a taller body to support the more powerful hardware and also a better cooling system.
