Apple's big baseball deal, detailed (sixcolors.com)

Major League Baseball was actually a pioneer in this space, building up MLB Advanced Media, which was sold to Disney and is the bedrock of Disney's streaming ...

But it’s going to take years, and the winding down of a whole lot of RSN contracts, before things clear up. At some point, the guaranteed revenue from RSNs will collapse, and leagues that rely on that revenue will be in deep trouble. This deal will probably be the first of many. A lot of baseball fans will spend this year grousing about this deal, just as they did about Facebook’s exclusive games the last few years. I’ve wanted this sort of thing for years—as a subscriber to the MLB At Bat package, I get streaming access to most games, but I have to flip around myself to avoid commercial breaks. The problem is, fans are like everyone else, and they are cutting the cord. Maybe also a roving in-stadium reporter who will do some light feature stories in some of the breaks. (On the other hand, Friday Night Baseball might reach fans who have cut the cord or otherwise don’t have access to baseball games.) Streaming live video is not the same as streaming on-demand video; while prerecorded content can be loaded up in advance on wide-ranging content-delivery networks, live content is coming down in the moment, and must be relayed to everyone watching. (The company is rumored to be bidding on the NFL Sunday Ticket out-of-market game package, and has also been named in various reports involving college conferences including the Pac-12.) If you’re familiar with the NFL Red Zone product, in which a studio host zips the viewer around to different live games when interesting things are happening, it’s a little like that—but for baseball. According to Mike Ozanian of Forbes, the deal is worth $85 million annually over 7 years ($595 million in total) with opt-outs after the first and second years.

The league and owners are privileged to be the stewards of one of the world’s foremost sports, but they largely — if not entirely — view it through a crude business lens. Of course, this is not the intent, according to MLB Chief Revenue Officer Noah Garden: “We’re prioritizing reach — we need to reach our next generation of fans and people that find themselves outside of the bundle. It’s telling that only now, more than a week into March, have they begun to get serious in labor negotiations. Appealing to and garnering as many consumers as possible is essential for a business’s growth and sustainability. That means no Todd Kalas, Geoff Blum and Julia Morales on AT&T SportsNet for Astros fans when the club’s Friday contests are streamed on Apple’s subscription streaming service. Common sense dictates that it’s smart for a business to cater to its customers.

Apple unveils a new iPhone, a new iPad and other devices. (unknown)

In a showcase on Tuesday, Apple added to its ever-expanding array of product offerings.

M. L.B. has begun canceling games for the upcoming season after failing to forge a new collective bargaining agreement with its players union, possibly impacting those plans. The surprise was the M1 Ultra processing chip, the latest and most powerful version in the line of Apple-produced chips, which rolled out in 2020, when the company stopped relying on Intel. Apple’s latest product showcase on Tuesday had all the hallmarks of a typical launch for the world’s most valuable public company: vibrant colors, upbeat music, a slate of incremental product improvements and a surprise.

The pairing of a Mac Studio and Studio Display is a less expensive, more flexible alternative to the iMac Pro’s computer-inside-a-screen. I don’t want to overstate Ive’s influence — or understate his accomplishments — at a company that’s as massive and successful as Apple. But with each passing Apple event, it’s hard to ignore the fact that a product shift is happening at the company. The last iMac Pro started at $4,999, while the starting price of a Mac Studio with Studio Display is $3,598. At least, that was my takeaway after watching Apple comparing the performance of the Studio’s M1 Ultra with the kinds of Intel Xeon processors it used to include on its professionally focused all-in-one, and which Apple now includes in its more expensive Mac Pro. That means four Thunderbolt 4 ports on its rear and the continued existence of traditional USB-A, Ethernet, 3.5mm audio, and HDMI ports for the vast majority of users that still need them. Apple’s professionally focused Mac Pro was given a space-efficient cylindrical redesign that failed at the basic task of keeping power-hungry components (like those a professional user might actually need) cool.

MLB partners with Apple for broadcasting deal (unknown)

Funny how they keep crying poor when it comes to negotiating with the players, but they keep coming up with new broadcasting deals when there aren't ...

That said, it really is something to watch MLB cry poor and say they just don’t have the money to pay the players what they’re worth, only to watch them continue to sign broadcasting deals starting as soon as this season. Ostensibly, this is to grow the game by putting it in places where new fans might be watching it for the first time. This is, of course, in addition to the many other places where MLB is slicing and dicing the viewing experience.
