The Haas F1 team fired driver Nikita Mazepin after dropping its Uralkali sponsorship in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The 25-year-old was born in Miami and holds dual citizenship in Brazil and the United States. Fittipaldi, who lives in North Carolina not far from Haas’ primary headquarters, ran three IndyCar races last season. Haas removed the Uralkali sponsorship markings from its cars last week following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but Mazepin’s status remained uncertain. That put the spotlight on Haas, an American team entering its seventh season of F1 competition. Haas did not announce a replacement for Mazepin, who turned 23 earlier this week. Haas also ended its sponsorship with Uralkali, the Russian fertilizer company owned by Mazepin’s father. “As with the rest of the Formula 1 community, the team is shocked and saddened by the invasion of Ukraine and wishes for a swift and peaceful end to the conflict,” Haas said in a statement Saturday.

Probably due to the fact he’s previously raced for Haas and left on “good terms” and would be a “natural fit.” A key reason he was forced into retirement was, of course, funding. Last October, he came pretty bloody close to inking a deal with Islero Investments to take over Sauber and place his IndyCar driver Colton Herta in the series. Signing with Haas would, however, require him to end his longstanding relationship with Renault/Alpine, as well as abandon his post as the Alpine F1 Team reserve driver. Haas is scheduled to announce its replacement for Nikita Mazepin early this week. Naturally, I also want to thank Gene Haas and Guenther Steiner for the chance to resume my Formula 1 career – I know just how competitive they both are and how keen they are to return to competing week in and week out. But if we open our minds to the less obvious, the possibilities are… While I understand the difficulties, the ruling from FIA plus my ongoing willingness to accept the conditions proposed in order to continue were completely ignored and no process was followed in this unilateral step. interesting, to say the least. Although it does raise a very pressing question that impacts the 2022 grid as a whole: who gets the vacant seat at Haas? There’s work to do but I’m excited to be a part of it. “I’ve been briefed as much as possible on the development of the VF-22 and the potential in the package. “I really have to say thank you to both Peugeot and Chip Ganassi Racing for releasing me promptly – both are great organisations.
NEWS: Gene Haas addresses pressure from NASCAR sponsors on severing ties with Haas F1 driver Nikita Mazepin of Russia and replacement timeline.
“There really is a lot of difference, the perception of what the Russian see it and what the rest of the world sees it as. You’d think that we would all see it the same but, no, the Russians are completely 180-degrees from what the Western people see it as. And, you know, you wish that we could all see the same thing but we don’t. I think what we see, we see it from a free speech issue and all, and the media is just overwhelming of how much attention is paid. So, their point of view is well, ‘we are just doing a police action’ so, I think the Russians, let’s say, have a completely different point of view than what the Western world sees. Uralkali is a publicly-traded company on the Russian stock exchange that is a major producer and exporter of fertilizer and Dmitry Mazepin is said to be worth in excess of more than $1.4 billion USD, according to numerous reports. “There was a lot of pressure from sponsors as far as the negativity of having a Russian sponsor and driver, so hopefully, it diffuses all of that, you know, politics.
Haas F1 team insist that they'll be fine without Nikita Mazepin and Uralkali, and will announce their new driver next week.
“We’re in the process of looking at several candidates, we’ll see who is available and what we have to deal with, but we’ll have somebody by Wednesday,” he said. The likes of Antonio Giovinazzi and Kevin Magnussen have also been liked to the seat. Team owner Gene Haas assured fans that they have enough money to comfortably continue with their F1 journey. The 69-year old is adamant that their primary identity remained American, even though they used Uralkali’s branding. Most of the F1 community felt that his presence only came with the amount of money Uralkali brought in. Mazepin’s departure from the team didn’t surprise many.

“I believe that the team will be able to overcome the absence of a title sponsor and thus solve this financial problem that arose with the departure of Uralkali.” But Schumacher is comforted by the words of Haas boss Guenther Steiner and thinks the removal of Uralkali and the Mazepin name from the team could lead to fresh investment opportunities. “It had to come to this separation mainly for two reasons: one is the pressure from outside, the other is the fact that Haas is an American team.”
The Haas Formula One team has terminated its contract with Russian driver Nikita Mazepin and title sponsor Uralkali.
"Haas F1 Team has elected to terminate, with immediate effect, the title partnership of Uralkali, and the driver contract of Nikita Mazepin," the team said in a statement. "To those who have tried to understand, my eternal thanks. "I am very disappointed to hear that my F1 contract has been terminated," Mazepin said.

“As with the rest of the Formula 1 community, the team is shocked and saddened by the invasion of Ukraine and wishes for a swift and peaceful end to the conflict.” Pietro Fittipaldi is favourite to replace Mazepin in the team for the 2022 season, although the likes of Antonio Giovinazzi, Nico Hülkenberg and Oscar Piastri have all been linked with the seat. On Wednesday, Motorsport UK announced it was banning Russian and Belarusian license holders from competing in the United Kingdom. A week after the Russian invasion began, speculation started surfacing that Mazepin was on his way out of the team and that reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi would get the first call. I have treasured my time in F1 and genuinely hope we can all be together again in better times.

And how much of it will be a continued effort to play the “victim” role with a distorted illustration of why it’s somehow somebody else’s fault? But he has done absolutely nothing to distance himself from the ongoing evil in which his father is involved, and he doesn’t seem to have any idea why he was actually removed. In fact, they were pretty much the only reasons he had his seat. In the grand scheme of things, he is, for lack of a better word, innocent. I will have more to say in the coming days. While I understand the difficulties, the ruling from FIA plus my ongoing willingness to accept the conditions proposed in order to continue were completely ignored and no process was followed in this unilateral step.
