Toni Collette is Brilliant in the Otherwise Dire 'Pieces of Her' (Decider)

The Australian actress throws down yet another tour de force in the series as Laura Oliver, a seemingly sweet and respectable single mom who has been long ...

In fact, by the time Pieces of Her‘s Season 1 end credits roll, the only thing you can be totally sure of is that Laura would do anything to secure Andy’s happiness. Through Collette, we understand Laura’s immediate wants in a scene even if the characters around her aren’t clued in. While other actors in the show clearly struggle to bring dimension to their thinly written characters, Collette finds ways to imbue Laura with depth, nuance, and soul. But I can’t — and I won’t — complain about how Pieces of Her lets Toni Collette be a shifty, ruthless, complex badass. Laura goes into a sort of trance and slits the assailant’s throat with a swift move. Laura tries to face and disarm the shooter, which only results in him running out of ammo and stabbing her in the hand.

Review: Netflix thriller 'Pieces of Her' never adds up, despite a terrific ... (USA TODAY)

"Unbelievable" star Toni Collette is back on Netflix in "Pieces of Her," an overlong new thriller adapted from Karin Slaughter's 2018 novel.

Despite being first billed, the Oscar-nominated actress ("The Sixth Sense") is curiously sidelined for much of the midseason episodes, and when she does reappear, she's frequently saddled with stale dialogue about finding her daughter. Meanwhile, Andy attempts to investigate her mom's dark past and slowly begins to realize that none of what Laura told her about her family is true. Andy, feeling rudderless, chalks up her lack of ambition to the death of her father in a car crash when she was just an infant.

Toni Collette Explains Violent 'Pieces of Her' Diner Scene: 'Reality ... (IndieWire)

Toni Collette's new series, "Pieces of Her," brings up question of American gun laws after intense diner sequence.

“There [is] a moment where Laura put[s] her hand over Andy’s face when they’re lying on the ground, and she [is] shielding her,” said Stoudt. “It’s not a scene about violence. It’s a scene about love…protect[ing] her daughter trumps any number of bullets that are being shot.” Everyone was bit nervous about it because it’s pretty intense and has to be done in a realistic way,” she said. And I was really wrong,” Collette said with a laugh. Laura’s actions in the diner set off a chain of events that her daughter could never have foreseen. “As Minkie [Spiro, the series director] always sa[id], if we didn’t nail that scene the show wasn’t gonna work,” said Stoudt. For the Oscar-nominated Collette, it was a “weird surprise” to see how intense the show was, especially as the moment at the diner culminates with her taking a knife through the hand and slitting a man’s throat.

Pieces of Her review – Toni Collette is a mum with a murderous past ... (The Guardian)

A shooting at a diner soon reveals to Andy that her mum has a secret life – unleashing a thoroughly entertaining torrent of twists, turns, murder and ...

The video that is – of course – taken of events in the diner by a bystander goes viral. When a shooter opens fire on the people at a nearby table, Laura takes charge, revealing the kind of ease and skill with various forms of weaponry – and a willingness to apply them fatally – that suggests Mommy might not be just the cuddly worrywart she appears. Such is the tasty question posed by Pieces of Her, a new Netflix thriller based on the 2018 Karin Slaughter bestseller.

New Thriller On Netflix Starring Toni Collette (unknown)

New 8-part series on Netflix starring Toni Collette and Bella Heathcote, jumping to the second place of Netflix's Top 10 Shows, a day after its release in ...

Collette and Heathcote perfectly capture the complex relationship the mother and daughter have, further complicated by what Andy discovers about her mother's past. Her past is portrayed as fraught with overbearing male figures—first her possessive father (played by Terry O'Quinn), then the charismatic leader of an anarchist group, named Nick Harp (played by Joe Dempsie). The series reveals Laura's past bit by bit, as Andy is discovering everything, the full picture of which is only truly complete with the very last few minutes of the entire series. But when her mother tells her to flee with a precise itinerary to follow, Andy is left wondering who her mother truly is. At its core, this is a story about a relationship between a mother and her daughter. Based on Karin Slaughter's 2018 novel, Pieces of Her is an eight-part series adaptation about a mother-daughter relationship and the secrets we keep from those closest to us. While Laura, a speech therapist, and Andy, an insecure 911 police dispatcher, are out for lunch, the diner is attacked by a crazy young man who begins by shooting his ex-girlfriend and her mother before turning to the rest of the patrons.

'Pieces of Her' assembles a Netflix mystery around Toni Collette's mom with a past (unknown)

WarnerMedia uses data to improve and analyze its functionality and to tailor products, services, ads, and offers to your interests. Andy is also a problematic character who seems too over her head to effectively deal with everything thrown at her, while those around her, including her former stepfather (Omari Hardwick), all seem to know a lot more than they're letting on.With her steely disposition and haunted stare, Collette (whose busy Netflix resume includes "Unbelievable" and "Wanderlust") helps elevate things to a degree as Laura, though she's absent for large chunks of time as the story unwinds Andy's current efforts while flashing back to Laura's history.Netflix nevertheless seems to get considerable mileage out of these kind of "You might like" series, which plant enough of a hook to justify the relatively modest (in this case, eight-episode) commitment." A skimpy plot undercuts Toni Collette's stirring work in Pieces Of Her (unknown)

Based on a novel by Karin Slaughter, Netflix's Pieces Of Her is a no-frills thriller.

Despite its foreseeable conclusion, Pieces Of Her is still a pleasant thriller, especially due to Collette and Heathcote’s work. Pieces Of Her spends a lot of time building up to the obvious final reveal, but the payoff doesn’t remotely live up to expectations. As she depicts Laura’s undoing, Barden is limited to being mostly expressionless, stuck in the anticipatory past and therefore more boring of the two storylines. It’s as much a serious family drama as it is a no-frills thriller. To figure out why she has to relinquish the life she knew, Andy begins to investigate Laura’s origins. Pieces Of Her sits firmly in this serviceable limbo.
